Palantir Shares Set for Best Weekly Performance Since 2024, Reversing AI Sector Underdog Status

Deep News08-08

Palantir Technologies Inc. (NYSE: PLTR) shares climbed 10% in Friday trading, putting the stock on track for a weekly gain of approximately 39%. According to Dow Jones Market Data, this would mark the company's strongest weekly performance since November 2024. The previous record was also set following a post-earnings surge, when the company demonstrated its ability to commercialize its artificial intelligence platform.

This time around, the standout performance of Palantir's U.S. commercial business was fully reflected in its financial results. The U.S. commercial segment has become the company's largest growth driver, with revenue increasing 149% year-over-year. The company has consistently emphasized the importance of sovereign AI, advocating for organizations to maintain control over their data and models. This stance places Palantir at odds with leading AI labs, which CEO Alex Karp has accused of attempting to "colonize" clients by ingesting their commercial intelligence and proprietary data.

However, this approach appears to resonate with the company's customers, who use its platform to connect disparate data sources and deploy AI models across their core business operations. In the second quarter, Palantir secured more than $2 billion in total U.S. commercial contract value, a 153% increase compared to the same period last year.

Palantir's strong performance has bolstered Wall Street's confidence in the company. It was hailed as an AI darling in 2025 but got off to a difficult start in early 2026 due to a broader sell-off in the software sector. By late June, the stock had fallen as much as 40% year-to-date. Now, shares are nearing breakeven for the year.

The narrative surrounding Palantir is shifting from "AI loser" to "AI winner," wrote William Blair analyst Louis DiPalma in a Tuesday report. "This standout performance breaks the concern about increasing competition in the AI workflow space with Anthropic and OpenAI," DiPalma said, referring to Palantir's earnings beat.

Following the earnings release, Deutsche Bank analyst Brad Zelnick upgraded the stock from Hold to Buy, noting that while many traditional software giants are still scrambling to transform their businesses, Palantir has a superior ability to deliver valuable AI applications for its clients. "Importantly, this quarter showcased Palantir's sovereign AI capabilities, which we believe are increasingly resonating as customers realize that AI value creation is not just about consuming more tokens, but converting those tokens into governable, measurable outcomes," Zelnick wrote in a Tuesday report.
