Apple is expected to take action to bolster sagging sales of iPads, offering new versions of the devices at a “special event” scheduled for Tuesday morning.
The invitation for the virtual event includes the phrase “Let Loose,” and features a stylized, animated Apple logo that includes a hand twirling a pen. That suggests updates are also coming to Apple Pencil, a stylus used for writing on iPads.
The virtual event will be livestreamed from Apple’s website starting at 10 a.m. Eastern, or 7 a.m. Pacific, three hours earlier than most other Apple product-launch events.
Apple hasn’t refreshed its iPad lineup since 2022. In the March quarter, iPad revenue was $5.6 billion, down 16.7% from the year-earlier period.
Apple news sites such as MacRumors and 9to5Mac report that the company is expected to launch new iPad Pro and iPad Air models, along with updates to the Pencil and the Magic Keyboard accessory that attaches to iPads to make them more like laptops.
The same websites report that Apple is expected to use OLED displays on iPads for the first time. According to 9to5 Mac, Apple will offer 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models, along with 10.9-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Airs.
The event comes about a month ahead of the company’s software-focused Worldwide Developers Conference, which is expected to feature Apple’s announcement of its strategy for artificial-intelligence software. The event will be held mostly online; CEO Tim Cook’s keynote address is scheduled for June 10.
