According to reports on March 1 local time, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in an attack on the morning of February 28. Ali Khamenei, born in 1939 in Mashhad, Iran, served as President of Iran from 1981 to 1989 and has held the position of Supreme Leader since 1989. Khamenei survived a targeted assassination attempt in June 1981, which resulted in the paralysis of his right arm. The Iranian Fars News Agency quoted sources close to the Supreme Leader's office on March 1, stating that four of Khamenei's relatives, including his daughter and son-in-law, were also killed. Iranian media reported that the government has announced a 40-day period of national mourning.
