Meta Platforms, Inc. is reportedly gaining a stark realization that developing cutting-edge AI chips in-house is far more challenging than it appears. This comes after the company abandoned its most advanced training processor and shifted towards a simpler approach.
The company had been developing a second-generation training chip under its MTIA project, which included a design codenamed Olympus, originally anticipated to be ready by the fourth quarter of 2026. However, concerns regarding technical complexity, manufacturing risks, and software stability have forced a reconsideration of the project. Meta had previously scrapped an earlier design named Iris, and with the internal team struggling to create a product that can genuinely compete with the Nvidia ecosystem, the Olympus chip now appears to face a similar outcome.
This reality is compelling Meta to rely more heavily on external partners for the time being. The company recently signed a multi-billion dollar agreement with Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, to lease its AI chips. Additionally, Meta is collaborating with Advanced Micro Devices to deploy up to 6 gigawatts worth of Instinct chips in its data centers. The company has also committed to deploying Nvidia hardware across multiple future generations within its data center infrastructure.
