YouTube Premium Introduces AI-Powered Playlist Creation Feature

YouTube is launching a new AI-driven playlist generation feature, allowing Premium subscribers on iOS and Android to create custom playlists using text prompts. Users can access the feature by navigating to the "Library" tab within the app, tapping the "New" button, and selecting the "AI Playlist" option. They can then generate playlists by typing or speaking commands such as "intense death metal," "melancholic post-rock," "progressive house remixes for a chill party," "indie pop," or "90s classic hits."

YouTube has been experimenting with AI playlist generation technology for some time. In July 2024, the company began testing a new feature in the United States that enabled users to create personalized radio stations through voice or text commands. Other streaming competitors, including Spotify, Amazon Music, and Deezer, have also rolled out AI-powered playlist or radio creation tools.

YouTube is continuing to enhance the appeal of its Premium subscription package. Earlier this week, the platform started limiting some free users from viewing lyrics within the YouTube Music app. The company clarified that this restriction is part of a test affecting only a "small subset of ad-supported free users," with the majority still able to access lyrics normally.

Alphabet's subscription revenue has shown recent growth, with YouTube serving as a core component of this business segment. Earlier this month, Alphabet announced that the combined number of paying subscribers for Google One cloud services and YouTube Premium has now reached 325 million.
