Airline Stocks Surge on United-American Mega Deal Rumour

Tiger Newspress04-14

Airline stocks surged in morning trading. JetBlue rose 11%; American Airlines rose 9%; Alaska Air rose 8%; Delta Air rose 7%; Southwest Airlines rose 6%; Frontier Group rose 5%; United Airlines rose 3%; Ryanair Holdings rose 2%.

A potential deal between United Airlines and American Airlines would create an industry behemoth and invite extraordinary scrutiny from regulators, labor unions and consumer advocates, all wary of higher fares and ‌reduced competition.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby floated a potential merger of the two carriers to U.S. President Donald Trump in late February, according to two sources familiar with the matter, but industry officials were quick to highlight the formidable antitrust obstacles such a deal would face.

The details of Kirby's proposal were not immediately clear.

Even if United and American were able to make their case to the Trump administration, scrutiny could come from other quarters.
