The U.S. investment-grade bond market has now set monthly issuance records for three consecutive months, underscoring how the massive spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure is fueling an unprecedented pace of corporate borrowing from highly-rated companies. As AI hyperscalers like Google parent Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta issue debt at record levels, a major shift in funding dynamics is underway.
The paradigm has moved away from tech giants self-funding their AI ambitions through internal cash flow and toward a new phase where global capital markets collectively finance the construction of AI super-factories for these technology leaders. However, this financing boom is also putting sustained upward pressure on long-term Treasury yields, particularly the 10-year and 30-year maturities.
According to the latest data compiled by Bloomberg, U.S. investment-grade bond supply reached $145.2 billion in August as of Monday, surpassing the previous monthly record of $136 billion set in August 2020. Earlier this year, January, June, and July each set all-time highs for their respective months, with three other months recording their second-busiest issuance levels on record.
On a broader scale, AI hyperscalers including Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta have issued nearly $220 billion in bonds since the start of this year, more than double the $108 billion issued throughout 2025. This represents a record pace for the comparable period. Notably, 2025 itself was already well above historical norms—U.S. bank data shows the five largest hyperscalers issued $121 billion in U.S. corporate bonds during 2025, compared to an average of just $28 billion annually from 2020 to 2024.
In other words, the issuance volume in just the first eight months of 2026 has already significantly exceeded the typical full-year levels of any prior period, marking this as the highest and most unprecedented AI debt financing cycle on record. Adding to the picture, Morgan Stanley projects that global AI-related debt financing could approach $570 billion in 2026.
These figures not only reinforce the certainty of funding for AI infrastructure investments but also mean that capital costs, long-end Treasury yields of 10 years or more, and return on invested capital (ROIC) will become the core stress tests for the next phase of the AI bull market.
The AI Cash-Burning Wave from Alphabet to AMD Ignites the Credit Market
The flood of bond issuance has made investors increasingly selective about which bonds to buy and at what price. This was particularly evident last week, when the proportion of initial subscription orders that were ultimately withdrawn rose sharply. But that has not stopped companies from continuing to tap the debt market, with another $9.1 billion in bond deals planned on Monday alone. That day saw 12 transactions, including two from private credit funds.
As illustrated, high-grade bond issuance has again set a monthly record—August marks the fourth month this year to hit an all-time high. This month's issuance is led by Alphabet's $25 billion bond offering, which is the eighth deal this year sized at $25 billion or more. Notably, all eight of those transactions came from technology companies.
More issuance is on the horizon. JPMorgan recently raised its forecast for 2026 technology, media, and telecommunications (TMT) dollar bond issuance by about 20% to $540 billion. Based on the latest disclosed figures, Alphabet raised $31.51 billion across dollar, sterling, and Swiss franc markets in February, followed by €9 billion (approximately $10.6 billion), C$8.5 billion (about $6.2 billion), and ¥576.5 billion yen (roughly $3.6 billion) in May. In August, it completed another $25 billion in dollar bonds. Excluding any proposed Australian dollar debt, its public bond financing for 2026 has already reached approximately $76.9 billion.
Alphabet is also preparing to enter the Australian dollar-denominated corporate bond market for the first time, with maturities of up to 20 years. August also includes a $10 billion bond offering from U.S. healthcare giant AbbVie Inc. to fund an acquisition, as well as a $6.75 billion bond sale from financial giant HSBC Holdings Plc. Last week, AMD, one of Nvidia's strongest competitors in the AI chip space, raised $4.75 billion, marking the largest dollar bond issuance in the chipmaker's history.
The debt capital markets typically accelerate in early September, especially after the U.S. Labor Day holiday. Year-to-date bond supply has already reached $1.46 trillion, up 8.5% from the same period in 2020, when a pandemic-driven issuance wave set an annual record. Global debt financing activity has also intensified significantly in 2026, with cumulative sales of publicly syndicated bonds reaching $5 trillion at an unprecedented speed.
Tech Giants' Borrowing Meets Government Deficit, Pushing 30-Year Yields to Highest Since 2007
As described above, the unprecedented AI investment boom has triggered a critical financing paradigm shift: from tech giants building AI with their own free cash flow to a new phase where global capital markets jointly fund AI factories. Bloomberg-compiled data shows August's U.S. investment-grade bond issuance alone reached $145.2 billion, setting a record for the month. These latest debt issuance figures serve as strong validation of AI computing demand and capital expenditure certainty, while also signaling that AI has evolved from a stock market theme into a macro capital cycle capable of reshaping global credit market pricing.
What truly warrants caution is that this AI financing boom is generating an internal counterforce—the more capital the AI training and inference supercycle demands, the more expensive that capital itself may become. On August 17, the 30-year U.S. Treasury yield rose to 5.3103%, the highest level since 2007. The core drivers include not only the approximately $1.9 trillion U.S. fiscal deficit, which represents about 6% of GDP, along with energy and inflation risks, but also the duration supply created by AI companies issuing large volumes of long-term corporate bonds. The 30-year real yield is also approaching 3%, a level not seen in about 18 years.
The economic mechanism is straightforward: the U.S. Treasury and companies like Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta are simultaneously competing for global long-term capital. Investors demand higher term premiums and real returns, which pushes up long-term risk-free rates. This raises corporate weighted average cost of capital (WACC), thereby elevating the minimum return threshold for AI data centers, GPU clusters, and power and network infrastructure. BlackRock, the Wall Street asset management giant, directly describes this phenomenon as a rare case of capital competition or capital scarcity in recent years.
Therefore, AI CapEx is simultaneously driving economic growth and semiconductor orders while potentially raising the entire financial system's discount rate through bond supply—this is the macro feedback loop most worth watching in the current AI supercycle. However, this does not mean the AI investment cycle will be terminated by high interest rates. Rather, it signals that a clear "financing capability stratification" will emerge in the next phase.
Top hyperscalers like Alphabet can raise funds across dollars, euros, sterling, Swiss francs, Canadian dollars, yen, and even Australian dollars, proving that global bond investors remain willing to support their AI infrastructure buildout with long-term capital. In February, Alphabet's $20 billion dollar bond offering alone attracted over $100 billion in orders, demonstrating that top-tier credit issuers retain extremely strong financing capacity.
Moreover, the latest corporate earnings and AI cloud demand have eased some concerns about AI returns. Wall Street institutional investors appear to be shifting from questioning whether AI CapEx is too high to identifying who can ultimately convert that CapEx into sustained strong profits. The real dividing line for AI capital expenditure going forward will no longer be who has the ambition to spend the most on AI, but rather who possesses the lowest financing costs, strongest operating cash flow, highest GPU utilization, and clearest AI monetization capabilities.
Cloud platforms with robust balance sheets like Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon may further widen their advantages, while AI infrastructure-related tech companies that rely heavily on external financing, have high customer concentration, and maintain negative free cash flow will be the first to feel the pressure of long-end rates above 5%. The current AI investment boom is better defined as a "capital cost stress test for the AI supercycle" rather than a signal of an AI bubble bursting.
From a short-term perspective, record bond issuance means that funding for AI data center construction—including data centers, GPUs/ASICs, HBM/DRAM/NAND memory components, optical interconnects, power and liquid cooling systems, and energy storage—is more certain, further strengthening the fundamentals of the AI computing supply chain. In the medium to long term, however, one must watch a dangerous self-reinforcing chain: AI CapEx rises, leading to increased AI bond issuance, which pushes up long-end real yields and term premiums, raising discount rates and financing costs for tech companies. The market then demands higher ROIC, ultimately eliminating marginal AI projects.
Some analysts even suggest that real yields may continue to climb until high financing costs genuinely begin to curb borrowing and risk asset demand. In other words, the biggest enemy of the next phase of the AI bull market may no longer be a lack of AI computing demand, but rather that demand is so strong it begins competing with the U.S. government for global capital—ultimately pushing capital market prices too high.
