White House Border Chief Announces Major Surge of ICE Personnel to New York City

Deep News06-08

The Trump administration has formulated a plan to significantly increase the deployment of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel to New York City. This move is likely to escalate the existing tensions between President Trump and New York Governor Kathy Hochul, which stem from disagreements over immigration policy.

Tom Homan, the White House border czar appointed by President Trump, stated on Monday that he had previously warned Governor Hochul about the planned increase in personnel before she signed a bill at the end of last month. This legislation restricts ICE operations within the state and prohibits ICE agents from wearing masks.

"You will see a deployment of ICE agents to New York City like you've never seen before. It will be coming very soon," Homan said during a television appearance. "I just reviewed an operational plan. I won't say when it's going to happen, but it's coming."

Both Trump and Homan have previously threatened to substantially increase the number of immigration enforcement officers in New York City but have not yet acted on these threats as they have with other Democrat-led cities and states.

Homan maintains that it is far easier for immigration enforcement officers to make arrests of individuals already in custody within jails than to conduct apprehensions within communities. He indicated that he had privately informed Hochul that if she obstructed ICE from arresting individuals already detained by police, he would send a large number of additional ICE agents to New York City.

Homan's comments come as an immigration detention center in New Jersey continues to experience ongoing tensions and protest activity.
