MONTE DEI PASCHI (MPS) BMPS.MI, MEDIOBANCA MDBI.MI

The state-backed lender on Friday joined in the consolidation wave sweeping Italian banking with a surprise 13.3 billion euro ($14 billion) all-share offer to buy merchant bank Mediobanca.

Italy's government supports Banca Monte dei Paschi's (MPS) bid Mediobanca as the proposed deal may strengthen the country's banking system and its broader economy.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Saturday that Italians should be proud that MPS was now a financially healthy bank able to launch "ambitious operations".

Speaking to reporters in Saudi Arabia, she said if its bid for Mediobanca were to be successful it would create a third major banking group, (alongside Intesa Sanpaolo and UniCredit), and "that could play an important role in safeguarding Italians' savings". She did not elaborate.

In a letter to Mediobanca's staff, Chief Executive Alberto Nagel and Director General Francesco Saverio Vinci said Monte dei Paschi's bid had not been agreed with the Milan-based bank.

Mediobanca's board will meet on Tuesday to discuss the bid by MPS, a person close to the situation said.

(*) It makes no sense for the Italian government to sell more stakes in the Tuscan bank at a time when its shares are falling, Marco Osnato, the economic affairs spokesman for Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy party, said in an interview with La Repubblica on Monday.

Osnato was rebuffing calls from deputy premier Antonio Tajani for the full privatisation of MPS. He said markets needed time to understand the Mediobanca deal, and a decision on when to sell the state's residual stake in MPS would be taken depending on what creates the most value for taxpayers.
