Shopify's Costs Could Benefit From Open Source AI -- Market Talk

Dow Jones01-29

1412 ET - Shopify may be a beneficiary of AI models going open source, National Bank of Canada's Richard Tse tells the WSJ. China's low-cost AI model DeepSeek sent shivers in the tech and power-supply industries Monday, but the analyst said in a call that Shopify wasn't affected as a company that deploys AI rather than develops it. "If the tech gets democratized as they seem to be, these names [such as Shopify] benefit because the cost is now lower for them," Tse said. He says that because last year a big driver of volatility was operating leverage, and the low-cost potential of open-source AI could ease the OpEx burden, this may have "amplified the outsized moves." Shares traded 8.2% higher at C$166.96. (adriano.marchese@wsj.com)
