US President Donald Trump has slapped 10% additional tariffs on China, citing what the administration describes as the "extraordinary threat" posed by the inflow of fentanyl from China through Mexico and Canada.
Trump will levy the additional tariff against China "until the crisis is alleviated," according to a fact sheet by the White House released Saturday.
The declaration takes "bold action to hold Mexico, Canada, and China accountable to their promises of halting illegal immigration and stopping poisonous fentanyl and other drugs" from entering the country, the White House said.
Trump's declaration followed through a threat he made during a program right after his inauguration in January.
He also imposed a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada.
The tariffs are a way of using US leverage to ensure the safety of Americans, adding "access to the American market is a privilege," Trump said.
