Trump Tariffs, More Big Tech Earnings, and a Jobs Report: What to Know This Week

The latest jobs data and a heavy slate of fourth-quarter earnings reports will be this week’s highlights. Roughly one in four S&P 500 companies are scheduled to report.

Palantir Technologies and Tyson Foods release results on Monday, then AMD, Alphabet, Chipotle Mexican Grill, PayPal Holdings, PepsiCo, Pfizer, and Spotify Technology all report on Tuesday.

Tariff reaction will be at the forefront of the market narrative in the week ahead. Trump followed through with his plans on Saturday, placing tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China, which will be fully in force by Tuesday, Feb. 4. There will be 25% duties on Canada and Mexico and 10% on China over issues of fentanyl and illegal migration.

On Wednesday, Arm Holdings, Ford Motor, Novo Nordisk, Qualcomm, Uber Technologies, and Walt Disney release earnings. Amazon.com, ConocoPhillips, Eli Lilly, Expedia Group, Honeywell International, Linde, and Philip Morris International report on Thursday, then Cboe Global Markets and First Energy go on Friday.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics will publish the jobs report for January on Friday. Economists are expecting growth of 165,000 nonfarm payrolls and an unchanged unemployment rate of 4.1%. On Tuesday, the BLS will release the latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey.

Other economic data to watch this week include the Institute for Supply Management’s Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index for January on Monday, followed by the Services equivalent on Wednesday. On Friday, the University of Michigan will release its Consumer Sentiment Index for February.

Clorox, Equity Residential, Idexx Laboratories, NXP Semiconductors, Palantir, and Tyson announce earnings. 

The Institute for Supply Management releases its Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index for January. Consensus estimate is for a 49.6 reading, slightly higher than in December. 

Tuesday 2/4

Advanced Micro Devices, Alphabet, Amgen, Apollo Global Management, Archer-Daniels-Midland, Atmos Energy, Ball Corp., Centene, Chipotle, Cummins, Electronic Arts, Enphase Energy, Enterprise Products Partners, Estée Lauder, Fair Isaac, Ferrari, FMC, Fox, Gartner, Hubbell, IDEX, Jack Henry & Associates, Jacobs Solutions, Juniper Networks, KKR, Marathon Petroleum, Match Group, Merck, Mondelez International, Omnicom Group, PayPal, PepsiCo, Pfizer, Prudential Financial, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Simon Property Group, Snap, Spotify, TransDigm Group, Veralto, UBS, WEC Energy Group, and Xylem report quarterly results.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. Expectations are for 8.02 million job openings on the last business day of December, nearly 100,000 less than in November.

Aflac, Align Technology, Allstate, Arm, AvalonBay Communities, Bio-Techne, Boston Scientific, Bunge Global, Cencora, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Corteva, Dayforce, Emerson Electric, Fiserv, Ford Motor, Globe Life, GSK, Hologic, Illinois Tool Works, Johnson Controls International, McKesson, MetLife, Molina Healthcare, Novo Nordisk, Old Dominion Freight Line, O’Reilly Automotive, PTC, Qualcomm, Stanley Black & Decker, Steris, Skyworks Solutions, T. Rowe Price Group, Uber, UDR, and Disney release earnings.

ADP releases its National Employment Report for January. Economists forecast a 150,000 increase in private-sector employment, following a 122,000 gain in December.

The ISM releases its Services PMI for January. The consensus call is for a 54.2 reading, roughly even with the December data.

Thursday 2/6

Air Products & Chemicals, Amazon, AstraZeneca, Becton Dickinson, BorgWarner, Bristol Myers Squibb, Cloudfare, ConocoPhillips, Eli Lilly, Equifax, Expedia, Fortinet, Hershey, Hilton Worldwide Holdings, Honeywell, Huntington Ingalls Industries, Intercontinental Exchange, Iqvia Holdings, Kenvue, Labcorp Holdings, Linde, MarketAxess Holdings, Microchip Technology, Monolithic Power Systems, Philip Morris International, Ralph Lauren, Roblox, Snap-On, Take-Two Interactive Software, Tapestry, VeriSign, Thomson Reuters, Xcel Energy, Yum! Brands, and Zimmer Biomet Holdings hold conference calls to discuss quarterly results.

Friday 2/7

Cboe Global Markets, FirstEnergy, Fortive, and Kimco Realty report earnings.

The BLS releases the jobs report for January. Economists forecast a 165,000 increase in nonfarm payrolls, after a 256,000 gain in December. The unemployment rate is expected to be unchanged at 4.1%.

The University of Michigan releases its Consumer Sentiment Index for February. Consensus estimate is for a 71.5 reading, slightly higher than January’s 71.1 Consumers’ year-ahead expectation for inflation was 3.3% in January, a seven-month high.
