The Chinese government denounced the United States' declaration of a 10% additional tariff on Chinese goods, saying it will counter with a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization, according to a statement by the Commerce Ministry released Sunday.
Trump imposed the tariff to force Beijing to stop the inflow of fentanyl through Canada and Mexico, according to a fact sheet by the White House released Saturday.
China said the tariff "seriously violates WTO rules" and will take countermeasures to protect its interests, the ministry said.
A spokesperson for China's foreign ministry said "fentanyl is an issue for the US," adding the tariffs "cannot solve the US' problems at home, and more importantly, does not benefit either side."
The Chinese Ministry of Public Security also said the "root cause of the fentanyl crisis in the United States lies in itself," adding the US has do reduce domestic drug demand and boost its law enforcement.
