A statement from China's embassy in Washington on Monday criticized President Trump's threat to punish Beijing with even higher tariffs but offered no indication of what it would do in response.
President Trump early Monday warned he could slap Chinese goods entering the U.S. with 50% in added tariffs after Beijing vowed to match the 34% in additional tariffs the U.S. leader announced last week.
"We have stressed more than once that pressuring or threatening China is not a right way to engage with us," an embassy spokesman said in an emailed statement. "China will firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests," the statement said.
The embassy statement reiterated Beijing's view that Trump's steps are "unilateralism, protectionism and economic bullying" in the name of reciprocity and will primarily serve selfish U.S. interests.
