Alphabet's (GOOG) Google and Microsoft (MSFT)-backed OpenAI are facing a setback as an Indian government panel has proposed that AI companies be required to pay content creators a share of revenue for using their work to train models, Reuters reported Tuesday.
The panel reportedly said on Monday that AI firms should only be allowed to access Indian content for training if they pay royalties to a central body representing copyright holders.
The plan is being reviewed by Indian government officials while the industry and public have 30 days to challenge it, according to Reuters.
Google and OpenAI did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment on the matter.
