India is in discussions with Ant International to allow its digital payments platform Alipay+ to connect with the country's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for cross-border transactions, Reuters reported, citing two government sources.
The proposed link-up would enable Indian travellers to use UPI to pay merchants overseas that accept Alipay+, simplifying payments for tourists and small-value transactions abroad, the report said.
A final decision will reportedly be subject to security reviews, with officials weighing potential risks related to data protection and digital infrastructure.
Alipay is a subsidiary of Ant Group, an affiliate of Alibaba (HKG:9988).
