The U.S. military used sea and air-based platforms to launch massive strikes across Iran overnight, according to a U.S. official.
American destroyers launched Tomahawk missiles from the waters in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean Sea, while U.S. jet fighters fired missiles, the official said.
Ahead of the strikes, the Pentagon had assembled the greatest amount of air power in the Middle East since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, sending hundreds of jet fighters and support aircraft to the region. It also deployed two aircraft carrier strike groups to the region, gathering a maritime force that included more than a dozen destroyers.
That force, which included cutting-edge F-35s and F-22s, as well as electronic-warfare planes, refueling tankers and command-and-control aircraft, gives Trump the option to carry out a sustained air campaign against Iran, instead of the one-and-done "Midnight Hammer" strike the U.S. carried out in June against three Iranian nuclear sites. As part of the preparations, the Pentagon for the first time deployed combat planes to Israel for a possible wartime mission.
