Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday sent his condolences to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian for the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In a statement published on the Kremlin website, Putin characterized Khamenei's killing during U.S. and Israeli strikes as "a cynical violation of all norms of human morality and international law." The Russian leader said Khamenei would be remembered in Russia for bringing the two countries closer and deepening their strategic partnership.

On Saturday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov denounced the attack on Iran as "unprovoked" and warned that it risks sparking a period of instability in the Middle East and throughout the world, according to a statement published after Lavrov held a call with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi.

Tehran has been a major ally ofMoscow since Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine four years ago. It has provided long-range drones that Russia now builds at two large factories and which it has since modified to maximize their precision and destructiveness in strikes against Ukraine.
