US EARNINGS SEASON ARRIVES AS MIDDLE EAST WAR AT CENTER OF ATTENTION
U.S. first-quarter earnings season starts this week and could potentially take some focus away from the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran.
Still, investors are likely to look for early signs of impact on earnings from war, which began in late February and has caused oil prices and inflation fears to spike.
So far, earnings estimates for the first quarter have held up. Analysts expect overall first-quarter earnings growth for S&P 500 companies .SPX of 13.9% compared with the year-ago period, according to LSEG data as of Friday. That is down slightly from 14.4% growth estimated on January 1.
S&P 500 earnings grew by 14.1% year-over-year for the fourth quarter of 2025, the data showed.
Goldman Sachs GS.N reported results on Monday, but other big banks including JP Morgan Chase JPM.N are due to follow this week. Goldman beat expectations for quarterly profit, driven by strength in dealmaking and equities trading, although its shares fell over 3% on weakness in its fixed income, currencies and commodities division.
Netflix NFLX.O is also due to report this week.
