President Donald Trump on July 24 accused the European Union of targeting American companies with “illegal and highly discriminatory” fines, threatening to impose tariffs and launch a 301 investigation into the bloc’s practices.
In a post on X, Trump listed penalties imposed on major U.S. firms: Apple fined $15 billion, Meta $3 billion, Amazon $2.5 billion, and Google fined an additional $1 billion, bringing Google’s total to over $18 billion. He called the fines “without explanation” and said they began during the Biden administration but would not continue under his leadership.
“The United States of America is not a ‘PIGGYBANK’ for Europe, nor will we allow it to be!” Trump wrote. He added that he would immediately initiate a 301 Investigation into the “ROBBING” of American companies and taxpayers, and that the EU “will pay a very big price for this illegal and highly unethical conduct.”
Trump said the penalties would be “entirely reversed” and that a “substantial TARIFF” would be placed on the EU at the earliest possible moment.
