Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (TYO:7011) has secured an order for an automated people mover (APM) system for the first phase of the development plan for the new Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai, according to a Thursday release.
The contract is part of a consortium involving the group's Dubai subsidiary, MHI Mobility Engineering Services, government-owned Dubai Aviation City, and India-based Larsen & Toubro (NSE:LT, BOM:500510).
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and MHI Mobility Engineering Services will supervise the design, procurement, and testing for the 165 APM vehicles and signaling system that make up the system's core, as well as the overall system integration.
Larsen & Toubro will take on the design, procurement, testing, and on-site construction of other subsystems.
The deliverable will be the world's largest APM system, with a length of about 50 kilometers and connecting nine stations.
The parties expect completion by December 2031.
Al Maktoum International Airport's development is a project by the Dubai government to create one of the world's largest airport hubs that will serve 260 million passengers annually.
The Dubai government targets a 2032 opening for the airport.
