Microsoft (MSFT)-backed OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra has become a major target for Chinese AI labs seeking to replicate its capabilities, with DeepSeek and Moonshot AI reportedly using its outputs to train their latest models, The Information reported Thursday, citing people familiar with the efforts.

Moonshot used Astra while developing Kimi K3.1 Pro, while DeepSeek's V4.1-Flash 1017 upgrade also benefited from the technique, the report said.

The practice, known as distillation, has drawn criticism from OpenAI and Anthropic, which have intensified efforts to prevent unauthorized extraction of their models' capabilities, it added.

OpenAI did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
