Iggy's Journal: The US Just Shrank Most of Singapore's Tariff Edge Over China. Almost Nobody Noticed.

Everyone's been talking about the Trump-Xi summit this week. I don't think that's actually where the important change happened. It happened months earlier, and it took me a while to connect the two.

The Numbers

A US Supreme Court ruling removed much of the emergency tariff structure that had made China look dramatically more expensive relative to Singapore and other alternative manufacturing hubs. The summit itself mainly extended the existing truce, it didn't rebuild what the ruling took away. The "China plus one" story isn't dead, companies are still diversifying supply chains for reasons beyond tariffs alone, but its tariff foundation is now much thinner than it was even a few months ago. Meanwhile, Singapore's own 2026 growth forecast was raised to a range of 4.5 to 5.5 percent, with first-half growth already at 6.1 percent, driven largely by AI-related investment.

My Personal Take

I'll be honest, I almost filed this as a legal footnote rather than an investing story. It's not the kind of headline that grabs attention the way a summit does. But a tariff advantage that quietly narrows is exactly the sort of thing that changes an exporter's actual competitive position without ever showing up as a single dramatic event, and that's precisely the kind of change that's easy to miss until a quarter or two of numbers force you to notice it. Singapore's growth story right now leans heavily on AI-related investment, which is genuinely strong, but it also means real concentration in sectors still exposed to unresolved chip, AI, and export-control decisions. For a CPF or SRS investor holding an exporter, the honest question isn't whether the company looks strong today. It's whether that strength was ever really about the business itself, or about a tariff gap that's now considerably smaller than it was. Full breakdown of what actually changed and which sectors are most exposed is in today's episode.
