Redwire: A 21% Crash, a Record Backlog, and a $17.5 Million Question

Redwire (NYSE: RDW) reported third-quarter revenue of $109.0 million after the close on November 4 — up 5.4% year over year, but $17.5 million short of the $126.5 million Wall Street consensus compiled by Fiscal.ai. The stock fell 21% to $6.13 on November 5, the steepest single-day drop among the major US-listed space names that day. The same press release, however, reported a record 32.3% gross margin, a record $619.7 million backlog up roughly 75% year over year, a quarterly book-to-bill of 1.73, and a reaffirmed full-year revenue forecast of $450 million to $500 million. This piece answers one question: is RDW's crash a repricing of broken demand, or a mechanical overreaction to shipment timing in a falling market?

1. The miss is real — but it is a shipping problem

Redwire recognizes defense-tech revenue when hardware ships, which makes its P&L hostage to logistics. The quarter's shortfall traces to the unmanned-aircraft line, where deliveries slipped during the transition from the Stalker Block 30 to the Stalker Block 40 and the Penguin Mark 3, per management's explanation as reported by Yahoo Finance. Contrast that with the order book: while shipments paused, orders did not — Redwire booked $188.7 million of awards in the quarter, roughly 1.7 times what it recognized in revenue, and secured follow-on Stalker orders from customers including the US National Guard. When revenue is recognized on shipment and a product transition stalls, the P&L takes the hit immediately while the backlog absorbs the delayed work. The market priced the P&L, not the backlog. Figure 2 sizes the miss against what the reaffirmed guidance still requires: with $323.1 million booked in the first nine months, reaching the $450 million low end needs roughly $126.9 million in Q4, and the $500 million high end needs about $176.9 million — our arithmetic from the company's own figures.

2. The "record margin" is flattering — read the fine print

The headline gross margin of 32.3%, up from 16.3% a year ago, deserves a haircut before it is celebrated. The year-ago quarter included an $11.23 million purchase-accounting inventory charge tied to the Edge Autonomy acquisition; on the comparable adjusted basis raised by an analyst on the earnings call, gross margin was 27% in both quarters, per Yahoo Finance's account of the call. That still leaves genuine progress: gross profit more than doubled to $35.2 million, and the net loss narrowed by $18.0 million year over year to $(23.2) million, or $(0.09) per diluted share — better than the $(0.10) loss analysts expected. The less flattering line is profitability below gross margin: adjusted EBITDA worsened by $2.7 million year over year to $(5.3) million, as research and development spending rose 87.1%, a $6.7 million increase. Management is deliberately spending ahead of growth; the margin record is real, but smaller than the headline suggests.

3. What the market ignored: the demand signals

Three items in the release do not fit a crash narrative. First, backlog: $619.7 million, a record, up nearly 75% year over year — about 5.7 times Q3-level quarterly revenue by simple division, so the order book covers well over a year of work at the current run rate. Second, the order momentum: book-to-bill of 1.73 for the quarter and 1.63 on a trailing-twelve-month basis, both up meaningfully year over year per the press release. Third, customer breadth: a $20 million award from DARPA to complete additional testing of a scaled SabreSat spacecraft ahead of a very low Earth orbit flight test under the Otter program, disclosed November 5; a follow-on contract from Axiom Space for two Roll-Out Solar Array wings for its second space station module; and the launch to the International Space Station of the fourth and final pair of ROSA wings, completing a historic power modernization effort. The balance sheet also moved in Redwire's favor: total liquidity of $538.9 million at September 30, up 313.9% from the end of 2025, comprising $488.9 million in cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash plus $50.0 million of available borrowings.

4. The beta problem: how much of the fall was Redwire?

November 5 was a hostile tape for anything with a high multiple and a small float. The Nasdaq-100-tracking QQQ fell 6% and the S&P 500 fell 4%, and the space names fell hardest: $Intuitive Machines(LUNR)$ dropped 15% to $8.47 and $Planet Labs Pbc(PL)$ tumbled 12% to $11.17, amid a broad retreat that erased the post-midterm rally of November 4. RDW's 21% decline is the largest of the three and the only one tied to a fresh revenue miss — but a 17-point gap between RDW and the S&P 500 is not all idiosyncratic. Part of it is shipment timing; part is a crowded high-beta trade being unwound. That distinction matters for what happens next: beta retraces when the tape calms, but the Q4 shipment question only gets answered by the company.

Bull Case

  1. Reaffirmed guidance requires Q4 revenue of only about $126.9 million to reach the $450 million low end — barely above the $126.5 million Q3 consensus — and $46.8 million of work in process and finished goods inventory is already built and waiting to ship.

  2. A record $619.7 million backlog with quarterly book-to-bill of 1.73 gives revenue visibility of roughly 5.7 quarters at the Q3 run rate.

  3. Gross profit more than doubled year over year to $35.2 million and the net loss improved by $18.0 million; if the adjusted 27% margin holds on rising volume, losses keep narrowing.

  4. Total liquidity of $538.9 million, up 313.9% since December 2025, pushes dilution risk well into the future.

  5. The $20 million DARPA Otter award adds a second funded mission in very low Earth orbit — an option the market is currently valuing at close to zero.

Bear Case

  1. Hitting even the $450 million low end requires Q4 revenue of about $126.9 million, up 16% from Q3's $109.0 million; the $500 million high end needs roughly $176.9 million, up 62%. After a shipment slip, that is a narrow path.

  2. The CEO himself said revenue timing "continues to be uneven" — in a shipment-driven model, that is a structural feature, not a one-off.

  3. Adjusted EBITDA is still negative at $(5.3) million and R&D spend grew 87.1% year over year; the burn has not inflected.

  4. On a comparable basis, gross margin was 27% in both quarters — the "record" is partly an accounting comparison against a year-ago acquisition charge.

  5. In a risk-off tape, high-beta small caps keep bleeding regardless of fundamentals, as LUNR (-15%) and PL (-12%) demonstrated on Nov 5.

Strategic Slam

  • $Redwire Corp.(RDW)$ : the thesis hinges on Q4 shipment conversion of the $46.8 million defense inventory and delivery of the implied $126.9-176.9 million quarter. A position here is a bet on execution, not on demand — the demand is documented in the backlog.

  • $Intuitive Machines(LUNR)$ : no fresh company-specific bad news; its 15% fall was beta. The thesis depends on NASA lunar cadence, which did not change this week.

  • $Planet Labs Pbc(PL)$ : subscription imagery revenue makes it the steadiest of the three; a 12% drop with no company news is tape noise, not a thesis break.

Catalyst Calendar

  • Nov 5, 2026 — DARPA award disclosure: $20 million for scaled SabreSat testing under the Otter program (confirmed, Redwire press release).

  • Q4 2026 (expected) — Stalker Block 40 and Penguin Mark 3 shipments; conversion of the $46.8 million WIP and finished goods into revenue (company figures; shipping dates unconfirmed).

  • Q4 2026 results (expected; date not announced) — full-year 2026 revenue outcome vs the reaffirmed $450-500 million range.

  • VLEO precursor flight test of scaled SabreSat under DARPA Otter (timing unconfirmed).

Verdict

The 21% crash repriced a shipment-timing miss as if demand had broken. The record backlog, the 1.73 book-to-bill, the DARPA and Axiom wins, and the reaffirmed guidance say otherwise. I would treat the selloff as an overreaction to a fixable logistics problem — but the burden of proof now sits squarely with Q4: if the Stalker and Penguin shipments slip again, the bear case takes over and the guidance goes with it. Verdict: the market overdid it; let the shipments confirm before calling it a bargain.

Key Takeaways

  1. Q3 revenue of $109.0 million missed the $126.5 million consensus by $17.5 million, on defense shipment timing.

  2. The 32.3% record gross margin is 27% on a comparable adjusted basis — flat year over year.

  3. Backlog hit a record $619.7 million, up ~75% YoY, with book-to-bill of 1.73 for the quarter.

  4. Reaffirmed guidance of $450-500 million implies a Q4 of $126.9-176.9 million — the whole thesis lands in one quarter.

  5. Nov 5's tape (QQQ -6%, SPY -4%) amplified an idiosyncratic miss into a 21% drawdown.

Was this a 21% mistake by the market — or the first crack in the space small-cap story?
