Remember the retail frenzy as the Reddit crowd whipped up enthusiasm for meme stocks? Remember how flash mobs drove up selected issues with call-option buying which forced market-makers to hedge by buying the underlying stocks?

That’s mostly gone. In the short run, there was a lot of hand-wringing about the call buying as a sign of excessive speculation. My longer-term view is a rising equity call/put ratio is a sign of bullish momentum and rising call/put ratios were coincidental with equity bull phases. In the past, a decline of the 50-day moving average (dma) of the call/put ratio below the 200-day moving average has signaled pauses in bullish advances in the past.

Bad news from overseas on the pandemic front may have also contributed to the risk-off tone. Taiwan announced limits on crowds, following Singapore’s move to restrict foreign workers, in a wave of new restrictions in Asian countries trying to stamp out small outbreaks after months of keeping COVID-19 contained.

The new curbs prompted fears that economic growth could stall out, which led to stock selloffs in both countries this week. Low vaccination rates as well are contributing to concerns that their populations could be vulnerable if faster-spreading variants take hold.

The burst of stock-market gains and push to new highs early on Monday was reversed during the session, causing a spike in the number of stocks suffering a buying climax. This is triggered when a stock hits a 52-week high then reverses to close below the prior day’s close, potentially a sign of exhaustion among buyers.

Our Backtest Engine shows that this is the sixth-largest number of climaxes in a single day since the inception of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF TrustSPY,-2.12%.Every time more than 95 stocks suffered a buying climax, the S&P 500SPX,-2.14%showed a loss over the next one-to-two months. There were few losses over the next six-12 months, and they were relatively small.

Equally disturbing is the performance of the bellwether growth-cyclical PHLX Semiconductor IndexSOX,-4.20%.This index has now violated both absolute- and relative rising trend lines that stretched back a year.

Putting it all together, these are all signs that the bears are taking control of the tape.

Where’s the bottom?

This S&P 500 pullback is unlikely to be very deep. A logical support level is the 50-day moving average, at about 4050, which represents a peak-to-trough downside risk of -4.4% and just 1% down from current levels.

Some of my bottoming indicators are already starting to come into place. The five-day RSI is flashing an oversold reading, which is the first sign of a bottoming process. The CBOE Volatility IndexVIX,-1.01%(VIX) has spiked above its upper Bollinger Band, which is also a short-term oversold indicator for the stock market.

However, the term structure of the VIX is not inverted, indicating fear. In the past, a decline of the 50-day moving average (dma) of the call/put ratio below the 200-day moving average has signaled pauses in bullish advances in the past.Bad news from overseas on the pandemic front may have also contributed to the risk-off tone. There were few losses over the next six-12 months, and they were relatively small.Equally disturbing is the performance of the bellwether growth-cyclical PHLX Semiconductor IndexSOX,-4.20%.This index has now violated both absolute- and relative rising trend lines that stretched back a year.Putting it all together, these are all signs that the bears are taking control of the tape.Where’s the bottom? Markets need panic to set in for a durable bottom to be made. As well, the NYSE McClellan Oscillator (NYMO) has not flashed an oversold condition yet. While the S&P 500 is holding up relatively well and being supported by the relative strength of value stocks, growth stocks show considerably more downside risk. Despite violating its 50-day moving average and violating an important relative support zone, the NASDAQ 100NDX,-2.62%is not showing any signs of a durable bottom ahead. Here's what investors should know about this company with roughly 1,250 remote-first employees and a private market valuation of around $100 billion.

The mission and market opportunity

Coinbase's mission is to create an open financial system for the world. This goal is based on the belief that the traditional fiat-based financial system -- the way we currently spend, save, and invest money -- is inefficient. Instead, Coinbase sees a better solution: the cryptoeconomy.

The cryptoeconomy is a financial system in which digital (crypto) assets are built on blockchain technology. If you're unfamiliar with the term, the concept is simple enough: Blockchain is a widely distributed, self-governing database that validates and records all transactions on a network. This eliminates the need for a central bank (or authority) to mint and manage the currency. That in turn eliminates many of the transaction fees charged by payment processors and banks. Basically, blockchain is the foundation of a more efficient financial system.

When Coinbase was founded in 2012, the San Francisco-based company started as a place where users could buy and sell Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC). Since then, it has expanded its offering for retail users, and the company has added other cryptocurrencies and products for institutions and ecosystem partners.

In 2018, Coinbase started launching subscription products and services, including the ability to store, stake, borrow, and lend through its platform. Today, the company also licenses analytics tools to law enforcement and financial institutions, it provides software to help developers build blockchain applications, and it enables merchants to accept cryptocurrency payments.

The takeaway is this: Coinbase's total addressable market (TAM) depends heavily on the adoption of cryptocurrency. To that end, CEO Brian Armstrong recently said: \"We believe the cryptoeconomy could eventually grow to become a sizable portion of global GDP.\" If that's true, Coinbase has an enormous market opportunity.

Competitive position

Coinbase is the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States. The company has differentiated itself by investing heavily in security and regulatory compliance. In fact, Coinbase is one of the longest-running crypto platforms that has never lost customer funds due to a security breach.

This focus on providing a simple, secure user experience has translated into a thriving financial ecosystem. At the end of 2020, Coinbase had 43 million retail users, 7,000 institutions, and 115,000 ecosystem partners on its platform.

This expanding client base creates a network effect: As more retail users and institutions store assets on Coinbase, the company's liquidity improves, meaning it has more cash to build innovative new products that attract more users. At the same time, as the cryptoeconomy grows, Coinbase's scale should attract more ecosystem partners, adding further value to its business.

As a final note, Coinbase currently stores $223 billion in crypto assets on its platform. For reference, that figure represents 11.3% of all crypto assets in the world -- that makes this company a significant player in a rapidly growing market.

Financial performance

Currently, Coinbase generates the vast majority of its revenue through transaction fees, which are highly volatile, since they depend on trading volume. Even so, the median trading volume has increased over time, rising from $17 billion in 2018 to $38 billion in 2020. That has translated into strong financial performance.

Metric

2019

2020

Change

Revenue

$534 million

$1.3 billion

139%

Free cash flow

($121 million)

$3.0 billion

N/A

Data source: Coinbase.

More recently, Coinbase reported preliminary results for the first quarter of 2021. Notably, revenue surged to $1.8 billion -- 844% higher than revenue from Q1 2020. Additionally, verified users jumped to 56 million, up 65% year over year.

Going forward, the company's efforts to grow subscription and services revenue should reduce its dependence on transaction fees. For some of these products -- like the ability to store, stake, borrow, and lend -- Coinbase earns revenue based on the percentage of assets on its platform that participate in the specific product or service. In other words, investors should pay attention to Coinbase's ability to drive growth in both users and crypto assets stored on its platform.

A word of caution

Investing in a newly public company is always risky. IPOs can be mispriced and sometimes companies fail to perform in the public spotlight. If anything, this situation is more risky than normal, since it's infused with frenzied enthusiasm about cryptocurrency.

Last September, Coinbase traded at a valuation of $5.3 billion in private equity markets. In March 2021, private buyers valued the company at roughly $68 billion. More recently, that figure has climbed to $100 billion. That means Coinbase is worth about 20 times more today than it was seven months ago. That's a big jump, and it's been driven by the booming interest in cryptocurrency. If that interest disappears, Coinbase's value will almost certainly plummet.

That's why I wouldn't commit to buying this stock right away. At the very least, wait to see where the company's market cap lands when it goes public; then ask yourself if Coinbase is worth that amount. In other words, can Coinbase impact the world broadly enough to justify a $100 billion valuation? What if the valuation is $150 billion? If you're not sure, it may be prudent to wait a few quarters before you invest. That gives you time to monitor Coinbase's financial performance as a public company.

Don't get me wrong -- I like Coinbase. The company has a noble mission, a solid competitive position, and a history of strong financial performance. But don't act irrationally just because you're afraid to miss out. If Coinbase is truly a good long-term investment, waiting a few quarters won't be the end of the world.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Coinbase Is Going Public Wednesday: Is This IPO Stock a Buy?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nCoinbase Is Going Public Wednesday: Is This IPO Stock a Buy?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-04-13 23:06 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Cryptocurrencies have been getting a lot of attention lately, and the public debut of Coinbase, a platform for trading in various digital currencies, is likely to ramp up that attention even more and ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2021/04/13/coinbase-going-public-wednesday-ipo-stock-buy/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"2127017330","content_text":"Cryptocurrencies have been getting a lot of attention lately, and the public debut of Coinbase, a platform for trading in various digital currencies, is likely to ramp up that attention even more and potentially generate some volatility in the market.Coinbase stock is scheduled to begin trading on the Nasdaq Exchange under the ticker symbol \"COIN\" on Wednesday. To that end, CEO Brian Armstrong recently said: \"We believe the cryptoeconomy could eventually grow to become a sizable portion of global GDP.\" If that's true, Coinbase has an enormous market opportunity.Competitive positionCoinbase is the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States. For reference, that figure represents 11.3% of all crypto assets in the world -- that makes this company a significant player in a rapidly growing market.Financial performanceCurrently, Coinbase generates the vast majority of its revenue through transaction fees, which are highly volatile, since they depend on trading volume. Even so, the median trading volume has increased over time, rising from $17 billion in 2018 to $38 billion in 2020. That has translated into strong financial performance.Metric20192020ChangeRevenue$534 million$1.3 billion139%Free cash flow($121 million)$3.0 billionN/AData source: Coinbase.More recently, Coinbase reported preliminary results for the first quarter of 2021. Notably, revenue surged to $1.8 billion -- 844% higher than revenue from Q1 2020. Additionally, verified users jumped to 56 million, up 65% year over year.Going forward, the company's efforts to grow subscription and services revenue should reduce its dependence on transaction fees. For some of these products -- like the ability to store, stake, borrow, and lend -- Coinbase earns revenue based on the percentage of assets on its platform that participate in the specific product or service. In other words, investors should pay attention to Coinbase's ability to drive growth in both users and crypto assets stored on its platform.A word of cautionInvesting in a newly public company is always risky. IPOs can be mispriced and sometimes companies fail to perform in the public spotlight. If anything, this situation is more risky than normal, since it's infused with frenzied enthusiasm about cryptocurrency.Last September, Coinbase traded at a valuation of $5.3 billion in private equity markets. That gives you time to monitor Coinbase's financial performance as a public company.Don't get me wrong -- I like Coinbase. The company has a noble mission, a solid competitive position, and a history of strong financial performance. But don't act irrationally just because you're afraid to miss out. If Coinbase is truly a good long-term investment, waiting a few quarters won't be the end of the world.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":575,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":344455256,"gmtCreate":1618438846075,"gmtModify":1704710758023,"author":{"id":"3574980379472814","authorId":"3574980379472814","name":"Blackrose","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/42b16cfc65bcd98072134f84fc762e93","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574980379472814","authorIdStr":"3574980379472814"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"My feel is Wall Street is vs ms wood. Fed Chairman Jerome Powellis likely to be asked questions about the Fed’s low interest rate policies and asset purchases during his press briefing, following the Fed’s two-day meeting that concludes Wednesday.\nPowell is unlikey to be specific but what he says could rock the already volatile bond market, and that in turn could drive stocks. It could particularly hit growth stocks, if bond yields begin to rise.\n“I think the last press conference, I think I watched with one eye, and listened with one ear. This one I’m going to be tuned in to every word, and the markets are going to be tuned in to every word,” said Rick Rieder, BlackRock’s CIO for global fixed income. “If he says nothing, it will move markets. If he says a lot it will move markets.”\nRieder said the briefing should be “exciting to see,” and a challenge for the Fed to potentially begin changing communications on its policy. He said investors will be parsing every word. “This will be the March Madness,” for the markets, he said, referring to the highly anticipated collegiate basketball tournament.\nPowell clearly has the ball, and what he decides to say Wednesday will dictate to edgy markets how soon the Fed might consider paring back its bond buying and even raising interest rates from zero.\nStatement to stay mostly the same\nThe Federal Open Market Committee will release its statement at 2 p.m. ET Wednesday, after the meeting, and Fed watchers expect little change in the text.\nBut the Fed also releases officials’ latest forecasts for the economy and interest rates. That could show that most officials would be ready to raise the fed funds target rate range from zero in 2023, and a few members may even be ready to raise rates next year.\n“We think they will sound a bit more optimistic but still cautious. That said, we think it will be hard for them to sound as dovish as they have been just because the facts on the ground are improving,” said Mark Cabana, head of U.S. short-rate strategy at Bank of America. “As a result of that, we think they’re going to sound a little less accommodative than the market is expecting. We think they’re likely to show a hike at the end of 2023.”\nRieder said the Fed’s been steadily steering its easing programs, but now it needs to begin to communicate that it expects to change policy on both asset purchases and interest rates. He said the Fed has been explicit in that it would provide plenty of time between when it starts communicating change and when it acts.\n“It strikes me it’s time,” he said. Rieder said his out-of-consensus view is that the Fed could start tapering back its bond buying in September or December, and it needs to begin discussing that now. The Fed buys $80 billion a month of Treasurys and $40 billion a month of mortgages.\nHe also said the Fed could also start raising short-term interest rates next year without hurting the economy. The Fed has not forecast any interest rate hikes until after 2023, but that could change in its latest forecast.\n“They can’t raise short interest rates this year, but as you get into the second and third quarter of next year, not raising short-term interest rates would be incongruous with what their economic projections should be,” Rieder said.\nRates on the rise\nThe Fed meets against a back drop of rate volatility in the more typically staid Treasury market. Over the past six weeks, the 10-year yield, which influences mortgage rates and other loans, has risen from 1.07% to a high of 1.64% last Friday. It was at 1.6% Monday.\nThe yield, which moves opposite price, has been reacting to a more upbeat view of the economy, based on the vaccine rollout and Washington’s stimulus spending. It has also reacted to the idea that inflation could pick up as the economy roars back. Powell has said the Fed expects to see just a temporary jump in inflation measures in the spring because of the depressed prices during the economic shutdown last year.\n“They’ve got to start that communication ... the markets are waiting for it,” Rieder said. “The jumpiness of rates and the volatility in the market is because we haven’t heard their plan yet.”\nRieder said the Fed could raise interest rates while it is still buying bonds. He said it may want to shift its purchases more towards the long end to keep longer term rates low, since they impact mortgages and other loans.\n“In their economic projections, their employment projections for next year is probably going to be 4%. If that’s right, why not? Raising short-end interest rates and draining some liquidity out of the front part of the yield curve is not a problem,” he said.\n“Times like these call for creativity and innovation,” Rieder said. “They’ve been remarkably innovative. They’ve provided so much liquidity to the system, the front end is awash in liquidity and yields are too low, in an environment where you could have 7% growth this year.”.\nIn the last forecast, five of 17 members expected a rate hike in 2023, and just one forecast a hike in 2022. Fed officials provide their rate forecasts anonymously, on a so-called dot plot.\nThe Fed has said it would continue its bond purchases until it’s made “substantial progress” towards its goals.\nCabana said there could be a few officials who now forecast a hike for 2022, but he doesn’t expect the Fed to embrace that yet. The fed funds futures market is pricing in close to one hike in 2022 and three hikes by the end of 2023.\n“You think if the market is pricing that, and the Fed doesn’t deliver, the market should be disappointed. We actually think many in the market think the Fed will push back, and the Fed will tell the market it’s wrong,” said Cabana. “We don’t think so. We think the Fed will retain the optionality of having the market price in a rosier outlook. Does the Fed hope the market is right, or they’re right? The Fed is hoping the market is right because it wants to achieve its goal sooner. We don’t think the Fed is going to push back too hard.”\nThe Fed could say “substantive progress is still some time away,” Cabana said. He said he does expect the Fed at some point to change the duration of bonds it is buying and shift towards the long end to keep those rates, like the 10-year, from rising too much.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":137,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":322587372,"gmtCreate":1615816765796,"gmtModify":1704786987918,"author":{"id":"3574980379472814","authorId":"3574980379472814","name":"Blackrose","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/42b16cfc65bcd98072134f84fc762e93","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574980379472814","authorIdStr":"3574980379472814"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Vuzix(VUZI)$Financial report later will pull it down ? Yesterday, was another bad session for this risk cluster and Ark Invest had a day with outflows across all their ETFs highlighting that risk sentiment has changed. With the founder's bold move to increase the position in Tesla during the week the risk has gone up that this risk cluster could turn into an ugly forced selling dynamic causing pain in not only Tesla, Bitcoin, and Ark funds, but also US biotechnology stocks where Ark Invest is a major holder with high ownership in selected names.\n
\n
A little over a month ago we first flagged the Tesla-Bitcoin-Ark risk cluster as something to take note off as short-term correlation between Tesla and Bitcoin was shooting up. A survey from Charles Schwab also confirmed our suspicion that there is a big overlap as these two instruments are among the top five holdings by millennials. Our analysis quickly led us to Ark Invest with its famous Ark Innovation ETF which had a big position in Tesla and its charismatic founder Cathie Wood is a big believer in the so-called disruptive innovation culture of Silicon Valley. This class of people believe firmly in technology as mainly good for society in all its aspects and that Bitcoin is a protection against future wealth confiscation which is most likely inevitable due to historically high wealth inequality.
\n
This disruptive innovation culture is powerful. It is presented by some of the wealthiest people of this planet. Endless presentation about innovation and institutions like the Singularity University promote these views. Behind Bitcoin you find a huge online marketing machine sucking ordinary people into the game. Recently wealthy people such as Elon Musk has openly supported Bitcoin, first in writing and later in action adding $1.5bn to Tesla’s balance sheet and thereby significantly increasing its earnings volatility. The triangle of Tesla-Bitcoin-Ark and their respective momentum has reinforced each other creating a positive feedback loop luring more investors into these instruments. As we have seen this week the ‘tower of risk’ is beginning to show cracks.
\n
Ark position update and Cathie Wood’s bold move and the risk to biotechnology
\n
This week Tesla-Bitcoin-Ark all came under pressure from negative voices in governments over Bitcoin and beginning noise over real competition for Tesla in the coming years. The risk cluster was clearly moving together, and correlations started rising. On Tuesday, volatility picked up across the board and at one point Cathie Wood felt it was necessary to go public supporting her funds and said that she had increased their position in Tesla using big numbers in the future to justify increasing the risk. This is a bold move, but it increases the risk considerably. When you are at risk of seeing sizeable outflows, you should start reducing the most illiquid positions first while you can control the situation. Because if you are forced to do it by redemptions the game changes dramatically.
\n
The tables below show updated Ark Invest positions as of yesterday’s close. There are still 26 stocks where Ark Invest holds more than 10% of the outstanding shares. This could become a serious problem if Ark Invest is suddenly caught in a negative feedback loop together with Tesla and Bitcoin. But also note how US biotechnology stocks are overrepresented in this list of stocks with high ownership in percentage of outstanding shares. If Ark Invest suddenly experience across the board outflows, like it did yesterday, then they can suddenly be the forced seller in US biotechnology stocks where they are the whale. This could cascade into the overall US biotechnology segment although the group is diverse.
\n
Stocks held by Ark Invest funds with combined ownership above 10% of outstanding shares
\n
Source: Ark Invest, Bloomberg, and Saxo Group
\n
The table below shows the largest positions across all funds. Here Tesla has now jumped to 7% of AUM and the first five positions now account for 21.6% of AUM. The five biggest stocks are Tesla, Teladoc Health, Square, Roku, and Baidu. Square just recently reported disappointing Q4 earnings and announced the purchase of $170mn of Bitcoin increasing the risk and feedback loop further in this risk cluster. In the Ark Innovation ETF itself, Tesla is now 10.2% of assets and together with Roku (6%) and Square (5.4%) these three stocks represent 21.6% of assets. If you look at the 10 largest positions in the Ark Innovation ETF then the red thread is that they all come with very high equity valuations and thus low implied equity risk premiums. They are all also mostly equity financed, except for Tesla, which means that the WACC, cost of capital, predominantly come from the cost of equity. With low implied equity risk premiums, the risk-free rate dominates much more than for a company such as say Microsoft or Apple. This means that the rising interest rates could suddenly cause a huge shift in equity valuations. Not because the future is different but because the cost of capital has changed.
\n
Top positions in terms of Ark Invest AUM across all funds
\n
Source: Ark Invest, Bloomberg, and Saxo Group
\n
Correlations on the rise and drawdown outlier
\n
The best sign of risk going haywire is always fast rising cross-correlations whether it is on asset classes or single stocks. It has recently moved to around 0.6 and while it is not a new record the direction is up and has been fast coming from only 0.2 from a few weeks ago. The deal valued Lucid Motors at $24 billion based on a pricing of $15 for the PIPE on the deal.
\n
Lucid Motors is set to launch the Lucid Air sedan in the second half of 2021. There were over 7,500 reservations of the Lucid Air in February representing $650 million in sales for Lucid Motors.
\n
The company’s production capabilities are 34,000 units annually, with expansion plans that would take the company to 365,000 units annually. Announced future models include the Lucid Gravity SUV in 2023 and plans for more sedan and SUVs in the future.
\n
Shares of CCIV had hit a high of $64.86 before falling below the $20 level. Shares traded over the $30 level shortly in March and have not reached that level again.
\n
With several catalysts coming in the second half of 2021, CCIV shares could see strong performance. Lucid Motors has not announced a date for the merger vote, which could be another catalyst for shareholders to watch.
\n
Altimeter Growth Corp: The large Southeast Asian delivery, mobility and financial services company Grab announced a SPAC deal with Altimeter Growth Corp in one of the largest offerings for a company from the region in the U.S.
\n
Grab is the category leader for online food delivery, ride-hail and digital wallets in Southeast Asia. The company had gross merchandising value of $12.5 billion in 2020, which came in ahead of pre-pandemic levels.
\n
Over 670 million people live in Southeast Asia, which could give Grab a significant runway for future growth in its existing and new segments.
