But in the more obscure, speculative corners of the investing world the casino is rocking.</p><p>Meme stock darling GameStop Corp. is up 171% in just two days, and beleaguered movie theater chain AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. has soared 135%. Over 1 billion AMC shares have traded on Monday and Tuesday, compared with 24 million on Friday. Meanwhile, GameStop’s volume is over 340 million in the past two sessions, up from roughly 37 million on Friday. </p><p>For its part, the S&amp;P 500 Index is basically unchanged since Friday and its volume in Tuesday’s session is 21% below its 20-day average as investors await Wednesday’s crucial consumer price index data.</p><p>The mania, which has spread to many of Wall Street’s most hated stocks, has shades of 2021’s meme stock craze, when cooped-up individual investors railed against short-selling hedge funds on forums like <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/RDDT\">Reddit</a> Inc.’s WallStreetBets and the chatroom StockTwits. But that was three years ago. Wall Street has since gotten privy to how these “Reddit Raiders” operate and created a blueprint to profit. </p><p>Strategies that use algorithms to capture price momentum are now better positioned to jump on these rallies before they go mainstream. They can even add a little juice to the surges.</p><p>“A part of the industry is much more well-prepared for meme rallies and to take advantage of those meme rallies than when they were surprised three years ago,” said Don Steinbrugge, head of Agecroft Partners, which helps hedge funds raise money. “They want to get in on the beginning of the price movement, and they want to get out before the price collapses. They basically want to front-run the buying and selling of retail investors.”</p><h2 id=\"id_1240470623\">Casino Abuzz</h2><p>The latest chapter in the meme-stock craze began with a single cryptic post on X Sunday night from Keith Gill, the retail-trading icon who goes by the moniker “Roaring Kitty” and drove the original mania before disappearing from social media in June 2021. By early Monday morning, the market casino was abuzz with amateur and professional investors placing bets across the speculative world.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/0fdb5e724a4d42fe923a469b8a94229a\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"675\"/></p><p>Trading data from providers that cater to individual investors seems to validate Wall Street’s role in the latest move. Since Gill’s tweet went viral, users of Fidelity’s platform have actually placed more sell orders than buy shares, the company’s website shows, something that didn’t happen during the 2021 stretch when individuals were overwhelmingly net buyers. </p><p>Investors that have been nimble — and lucky — have seen massive gains. But others who embrace the “HODL” motto, short for “hold on for dear life,” are still in the red. GameStop is roughly 60% below its 2021 intraday peak while AMC is down 98% from a high. The massive paper losses could be a reason for some to finally cash out, according to Dan Egan, vice president of behavioral finance and investing at robo-adviser Betterment.</p><p>“There’s a very different, latent set of retail traders waiting to see certain price points just to sell out which we didn’t have last time,” said Dan Egan, vice president of behavioral finance and investing at robo-adviser Betterment. They dynamic could drive the cycle of the trade, he added.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/89dd00dfaf152577b77623fc8cf18867\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"675\"/></p><p>A smattering of social-media personalities have helped draw in uninformed retail traders to the casino, furthering the notion that trading meme stocks is just a form of gambling. </p><p>Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy has resumed his “Davey Day Trader” livestream, and on Tuesday morning talked about buying $500,000 worth of GameStop and AMC. Influencer Andrew Tate, who is charged with human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women, is constantly posting on X about buying GameStop. And social media influencers that were accused of orchestrating a pump-and-dump scheme have reawakened some of the animal spirits around AMC.</p><h2 id=\"id_2914202114\">Meme Risk</h2><p>Strategists like Egan warn retail traders to not buy stocks based on memes. Especially because the very groups touting shares are likely to quietly cash out while everyone else is buying.</p><p>Then, there are the trading platforms such as <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/HOOD\">Robinhood</a> Markets Inc. and market-making firms like Citadel Securities that will profit either way. Robinhood’s commission-free trading is partly driven by its ability to make money through transactions in what’s called payment for order flow. The money maker is controversial because brokerages get paid by market makers to route orders through them, rather than directly to stock exchanges. </p><p>Those market makers and brokers can make even more on equity options contracts given bid-ask spreads are typically wider than those on regular stock trades. Meaning the firms throughout the cycle of completing trades can profit handsomely from a boom in volume, regardless of how the companies do. So the soaring activity in GameStop and AMC, paired a boom in trading of options tied to both companies, means the market makers and options brokers are sitting pretty.</p><p>Not everyone is making money, however. Investors sticking to short positions in the meme stocks are facing more than a billion dollars in paper losses. That said, those numbers pale in comparison to the pain from three years ago that resulted in the implosion of firms that ran against the trend, like Gabe Plotkin’s Melvin Capital. Company) merger. I think it is also a company with one of the largest disconnects between fundamentals and price that I’ve ever seen. I’ll lay out what I know, and you can judge my thought.</p><p>Founded in 2017, VinFast manufactures EVs (electric vehicles), e-scooters, and e-buses. The company started producing e-scooters in 2018, ICE cars in 2019 (the production of internal combustion engine vehicles was phased out in late-2022), and e-buses in 2020. Its first EV product line consists of a range of SUVs (sport utility vehicles) which it began manufacturing in December 2021. VinFast’s manufacturing facility – which has 1,400 robots and is highly automated – is located in Hai Phong, Vietnam and has an annual production capacity of 300,000 EVs. Through June 2023, VinFast has delivered 105,000 vehicles – most of which are ICE vehicles – and 182,000 e-scooters. </p><p>Vietnam is VinFast’s headquarters and the company’s primary market at the moment. As of 30 June 2023, VinFast had sold around 18,700 EVs, mostly in Vietnam, since inception; the deliveries of the 182,000 e-scooters since the company’s founding all happened in the same country too. The company has ambitions beyond Vietnam and has set its sights on the USA, Canada, France, Germany, and the Netherlands as its initial international markets. VinFast commenced US deliveries of EVs in March this year while it expects to start delivering EVs into Europe in the second half of 2023. The company has recorded around 26,000 reservations for its EVs globally as of 30 June 2023.</p><p>Controlling <strong><em>nearly all</em></strong> of VinFast’s shares currently <strong>(99.7%) </strong>is Pham Nhat Vuong, the founder and majority shareholder of Vingroup, a Vietnam-based conglomerate. Vingroup has a major economic presence in Vietnam – the company and all of its listed subsidiaries collectively accounted for 1.1% of Vietnam’s GDP in 2022 and they have a combined market capitalisation of US$21.0 billion (note that this does <em>not </em>include the value of VinFast) as of 30 June 2023.   </p><p>In the two weeks since VinFast’s listing, the company’s stock price closed at a high of US$82, on 28 August 2023. This gave VinFast a staggering US$190 billion market capitalisation based on an outstanding share count of 2.307 billion (as of 14 August 2023). At the market-close on 29 August 2023, VinFast’s share price was US$46. Though a painful 44% fall from the previous day’s closing, the US$46 stock price still gives VinFast a massive market capitalisation of US$107 billion, which easily makes it one of the top five largest auto manufacturers in the world by market capitalisation. But behind VinFast’s market size are the following fundamentals:</p><ul style=\"\"><li><p>2022 numbers (I would have used trailing numbers, but they’re not readily available)<strong>:</strong> Revenue of US$633.8 <em>million, </em>an operating <em>loss</em> of US$1.8 billion, and an operating cash <em>outflow </em>of US$1.5 billion</p></li><li><p>As I already mentioned, VinFast has (1) 26,000 reservations for its EVs <em>globally</em> as of 30 June 2023, and (2) delivered 105,000 vehicles – most of which are ICE vehicles – and 182,000 e-scooters from its founding through June 2023.</p></li></ul><p>For perspective, here are the equivalent numbers for <strong>Tesla</strong> (NASDAQ: TSLA), the largest auto manufacturer in the world by market capitalisation (US$816 billion on 29 August 2023), and a company whose valuation ratios are often said by stock market participants to be rich:</p><ul style=\"\"><li><p>Trailing numbers: Revenue of US$94.0 billion, operating income of US$12.7 billion, and operating cash <em>inflow </em>of US$14.0 billion</p></li><li><p>Trailing deliveries<em> </em>of 1.638 million vehicles worldwide.</p></li></ul><p>So given all the above, what do you think about my statement above, that VinFast is “a company with one of the largest disconnects between fundamentals and price that I’ve ever seen”?</p></body></html>","source":"thesmartinvestor_highlight","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; I think it is also a company with one of the largest disconnects between fundamentals and price that I’ve ever seen. I’ll lay out what I know, and you can judge my thought.Founded in 2017, VinFast manufactures EVs (electric vehicles), e-scooters, and e-buses. The company started producing e-scooters in 2018, ICE cars in 2019 (the production of internal combustion engine vehicles was phased out in late-2022), and e-buses in 2020. Its first EV product line consists of a range of SUVs (sport utility vehicles) which it began manufacturing in December 2021. VinFast’s manufacturing facility – which has 1,400 robots and is highly automated – is located in Hai Phong, Vietnam and has an annual production capacity of 300,000 EVs. Through June 2023, VinFast has delivered 105,000 vehicles – most of which are ICE vehicles – and 182,000 e-scooters. Vietnam is VinFast’s headquarters and the company’s primary market at the moment. As of 30 June 2023, VinFast had sold around 18,700 EVs, mostly in Vietnam, since inception; the deliveries of the 182,000 e-scooters since the company’s founding all happened in the same country too. The company has ambitions beyond Vietnam and has set its sights on the USA, Canada, France, Germany, and the Netherlands as its initial international markets. VinFast commenced US deliveries of EVs in March this year while it expects to start delivering EVs into Europe in the second half of 2023. The company has recorded around 26,000 reservations for its EVs globally as of 30 June 2023.Controlling nearly all of VinFast’s shares currently (99.7%) is Pham Nhat Vuong, the founder and majority shareholder of Vingroup, a Vietnam-based conglomerate. Vingroup has a major economic presence in Vietnam – the company and all of its listed subsidiaries collectively accounted for 1.1% of Vietnam’s GDP in 2022 and they have a combined market capitalisation of US$21.0 billion (note that this does not include the value of VinFast) as of 30 June 2023.   In the two weeks since VinFast’s listing, the company’s stock price closed at a high of US$82, on 28 August 2023. This gave VinFast a staggering US$190 billion market capitalisation based on an outstanding share count of 2.307 billion (as of 14 August 2023). At the market-close on 29 August 2023, VinFast’s share price was US$46. Though a painful 44% fall from the previous day’s closing, the US$46 stock price still gives VinFast a massive market capitalisation of US$107 billion, which easily makes it one of the top five largest auto manufacturers in the world by market capitalisation. Cloud also has high switching costs, so the growth opportunity comes with significant pricing power attached to it.</p><h2>Advertising - Another giant in the making</h2><p>Many investors ask themselves if Amazon will ever come up with yet another AWS. We shouldn’t make direct comparisons, but its advertising business might be another giant in the making.</p><p>Amazon Ads is the company’s digital advertising offering, which has several parts to it. The most “well-known” part and where Amazon’s competitive position is stronger is in its <b>Marketplace Ads</b>. It’s easy to spot these ads, and it’s also easy to understand why they are doing so well.</p><p>If you open Amazon, you’ll see a variety of offers. Some of these offers are things you have already bought and might want to buy on a recurrent basis, others will be offers based on what you have searched for but not yet purchased, and others will be ads. You can spot ads because they have a “sponsored” tag beneath them.</p><p>Amazon’s shoppers typically come to the website with a purchase in mind, so there’s high intent in every interaction that happens on the marketplace. This intent, together with Amazon’s first-party data, is what makes Amazon Ads so powerful.</p><p>Advertisers on Amazon’s marketplace know that conversion rates for their ads are much higher than in other platforms where there&#39;s no buying intention. Let’s look at some numbers.</p><p>There are currently around 200 million prime members globally, 150 million of which are in the US. Growth has been strong over the last decade, although it’s expected to plateau in the next couple of years:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d45077e16946ccf5e3066109b4360715\" tg-width=\"768\" tg-height=\"584\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Backlinco.com</p><p>It’s normal for growth to plateau here. At almost 160 million prime subscribers, Amazon has close to a 50% penetration in the US. This number is higher if one excludes kids, for example. At these penetration rates and based on the value that the Prime subscription offers its members, there’s a significant opportunity to grow in price here.</p><p>The better opportunity comes from international markets, though. Amazon disclosed in Q1 2021 that it had surpassed 200 million global Prime members. Subtract US Prime members from this number, and we get to around 50 - 60 million international Prime members. This number is significant, but there’s still a long runway to grow in volume.</p><p>The international opportunity is even greater if we consider that Prime is much cheaper in international markets than in the US. Let’s look at the example of Spain.</p><p>Spotify and the lowest-tier Netflix subscriptions would cost ara Spanish citizen around €215 per year. Spotify costs €9.99/month, and Netflix’s low-tier costs €7.99/month. A Spanish citizen pays €36/year for an Amazon Prime membership. Amazon Music Unlimited is not currently included in the Prime membership, so we should add that to make it a fair comparison. With Amazon Music, the total would be €156 per year. This means you’d have access to Netflix (Prime Video), Spotify (Amazon Music), fast shipping, and other benefits for 39% less.</p><p>Yes, Amazon Music is not as good as Spotify, and Prime Video still lags Netflix, but the gap is closing thanks to Amazon’s investments. When this gap closes, would a Spanish citizen cancel their Amazon Prime subscription after a 100% price hike? It seems highly unlikely.</p><p>Price and volume will drive international, although competition will be more intense than in the US.</p><h2>Valuation</h2><p>Amazon&#39;s valuation has always been a controversial subject. Probably the best way to value it is operating cash flow. Amazon&#39;s stock price has followed its OCF evolution almost perfectly. It&#39;s also no surprise, then, that when operating cash flow went down substantially, the stock dived too. But it has now overcorrected, especially if you look into the future. I think this graph shows more than all the words I could write.</p><h2><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/2ac4cf5246f9d8440012d68f49a2b0c4\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"373\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></h2><p>FAST Graphs</p><p>The blue line shows the average OCF valuation of Amazon&#39;s stock, which happens to be almost identical as the OCF growth: 25% growth, an OCF multiple of 25. Of course, this is no coincidence. When you see how much the Operational Cash Flow is expected to grow in the next few years, I think this shows why we rate Amazon as a strong buy now. Even if the growth is not as high as expected, there&#39;s probably a margin of safety here. As you can see on the graph, in the past 15 years, it has not often happened that you could buy Amazon at a discount.</p><p>As we know, anything can happen in the stock market. There are no guarantees. But this seems to be an excellent price to buy Amazon shares and hold them for the long term.</p><h2>Conclusion</h2><p>All in all, despite Amazon stock&#39;s recent poor performance, there are many reasons to remain optimistic with a long-term view. Amazon is still reinvesting significantly into its business which we think is pushing back short-term investors. Probably the best way to value it is operating cash flow. Amazon's stock price has followed its OCF evolution almost perfectly. It's also no surprise, then, that when operating cash flow went down substantially, the stock dived too. But it has now overcorrected, especially if you look into the future. I think this graph shows more than all the words I could write.FAST GraphsThe blue line shows the average OCF valuation of Amazon's stock, which happens to be almost identical as the OCF growth: 25% growth, an OCF multiple of 25. Of course, this is no coincidence. When you see how much the Operational Cash Flow is expected to grow in the next few years, I think this shows why we rate Amazon as a strong buy now. Even if the growth is not as high as expected, there's probably a margin of safety here. As you can see on the graph, in the past 15 years, it has not often happened that you could buy Amazon at a discount.As we know, anything can happen in the stock market. There are no guarantees. But this seems to be an excellent price to buy Amazon shares and hold them for the long term.ConclusionAll in all, despite Amazon stock's recent poor performance, there are many reasons to remain optimistic with a long-term view. Amazon is still reinvesting significantly into its business which we think is pushing back short-term investors.
