( Microsoft still holds the top spot, though not by much.)</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The contrast between Nvidia and Apple is stark. Nvidia shares have rallied 144% this year. Apple is up 1%. Nvidia grew revenue 262% year over year in its most recent quarter, thanks to insatiable demand for artificial intelligence chips. Apple’s latest quarterly revenue was down 4%.</p><p>Nvidia sales have nearly quadrupled over five quarters. Apple has suffered year-over-year sales declines in five of its past six quarters.</p><p>You get the idea: Nvidia’s business is hot. Apple’s is not.</p><p>All of that underlines the importance of CEO Tim Cook’s keynote address at Apple’s 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference, scheduled for Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific.</p><p>Forty years ago, Apple used WWDC to highlight its new Mac. This year, the event will be all about AI. And for good reason. The uninspired performance of Apple shares reflects the company’s lack of substantive progress in generative AI, arguably the most important tech development in decades.</p><p>To be clear, Apple hasn’t been sitting idle. The company has been including neural processing capability in iPhone and Mac chips since 2017. Apple uses AI for facial recognition to unlock iPhones, for fingerprint scanning on Macs, and to improve iPhone photos. Apple has published papers on large language models, and Cook has made vague promises of AI magic to come.</p><p>But now Apple has to deliver. Here are four key themes surrounding this year’s keynote:</p><p><strong>Sam I Am:</strong> Apple seems unlikely to directly take on OpenAI, Microsoft, Meta Platforms, Alphabet’s Google or Anthropic in large language models. Instead, Apple will likely partner with an LLM provider, not unlike its longstanding search relationship with Google.</p><p>The smart speculation is that Apple will join forces with OpenAI and its cloud computing partner Microsoft. (Might OpenAI’s Sam Altman show up Monday? Or even Microsoft’s Satya Nadella? Stay tuned.)</p><p>Just how an Apple-OpenAI relationship would work is murky. Google pays Apple a whopping $20 billion a year to be the default search engine on iPhones and in the Safari web browser; Google in return gets search traffic it monetizes with ads.</p><p>In the case of AI, the monetization options are less clear. The cash flows could conceivably reverse, with Apple paying OpenAI—and in turn Microsoft—for the compute time required by users’ generative AI requests. Apple theoretically benefits indirectly from higher iPhone sales and reduced customer churn.</p><p>Gene Munster, managing partner at Deepwater Asset Management and a longtime Apple analyst, has mixed feelings about Apple’s likely approach. Aligning with OpenAI, he says, amounts to “outsourcing the fabric of the company.” But he adds that teaming up with OpenAI would effectively accelerate Apple’s AI efforts by five years.</p><p>Any AI deal that Apple cuts is likely get close regulatory scrutiny. Remember that a decision is expected later this year in a Department of Justice antitrust suit against Google that could lead to a forced breakup of Apple and Google’s search deal.</p><p><strong>Siri Is Dead. Long Live Siri:</strong>I recently asked Siri how it compares with ChatGPT, the chatbot from OpenAI. Siri gave me links. ChatGPT answered the same question in prose. While Siri is “optimized for quick tasks,” ChatGPT told me, “I am designed for deeper, more comprehensive conversations, creating writing, and detailed explanations across a wide range of topics.”</p><p>With the help of AI, Apple is likely to transform Siri into a digital assistant that adds the full chatbot experience on top its existing weather reports. Analysts expect hooks into Apple’s native applications, such as Mail, Messenger, Music, and Safari.</p><p>What could take longer is connecting Siri with third-party apps. Someday, you’ll be able to get Siri to call you an Uber when you fly into a new city. Eventually, Siri should simply figure out when you’ve landed and ask if you need an Uber. But not just yet.</p><p><strong>Big Models, Small Models: </strong>There are obvious issues with relying on cloud-based AI. Queries are expensive, requiring far more computing power than internet search. There are privacy risks. You need a network connection. And there are latency issues—it can take time to get responses.</p><p>It seems likely that in addition to a cloud AI partner, Apple will offer AI capabilities that rely on smaller models running locally on iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Imagine AI apps for health and fitness or for suggesting email responses. Let's dig deeper into the pros and cons of the stock to determine if it can generate similar returns over the next half-decade.Why Broadcom?The current iteration of Broadcom came to be from the 2016 merger of Avago Technologies and Broadcom Corporation to unlock synergies and better meet the demands of large clients. It specializes in semiconductor products, enterprise software, and data center equipment. And it emerged alongside Nvidia as an ideal way for investors to bet on the picks and shovels of the AI gold rush.Unlike Nvidia, which is mainly known for its high-end general-purpose graphics processing units (GPUs) like the H100 and A100 (which train ChatGPT), Broadcom focuses on client customization.The company is a leader in the market for application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), which are chips designed specifically for a particular company's use case. Second-quarter revenue jumped 43% year over year to $12.49 million, powered by demand for data center hardware and Broadcom's recent acquisition of VMware, a software company specializing in virtual machines, which run programs and deploy apps on the cloud.While Broadcom is far from a pure play on AI, its footprint in different technology niches gives it welcome diversification. So Broadcom's diversification could become more useful over time.Broadcom's bottom line is also impressive, with adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of $7.43 billion -- a whopping 59% of revenue. The chip designer took an early lead in the AI hardware race, leading to incredible business results and skyrocketing stock prices.</p><p>The stock traded at a split-adjusted $14 per share when OpenAI released the ChatGPT generative AI engine, powered by thousands of Nvidia AI accelerator chips. Today, Nvidia&#39;s share price has soared to $131. With a $3.2 trillion market cap, it&#39;s one of the three most valuable companies in the stock market.</p><p>Did you miss the boat on Nvidia&#39;s AI-based opportunity, or can the stock continue to rise from this lofty plateau? Free cash flows are consistently growing by about 500% in the same time frame. <strong>Microsoft</strong> <span>(MSFT<span> 1.31%</span>)</span> and <strong>Apple </strong><span>(AAPL<span> 1.97%</span>)</span> are still more profitable than Nvidia, but the chip expert is catching up.</p><p>Many market observers like to point out that the generative AI revolution is only getting started. ChatGPT is less than two years old. Only a couple of tech giants have come up with comparably powerful large language models (LLMs) so far, though many are working on their own long-term generative AI plans. Until further notice, Nvidia&#39;s accelerator chips are the gold standard against which other solutions must be measured. If you&#39;re building a strong AI system, Nvidia&#39;s solutions are the default and the industry standard. Others must develop and then prove some sort of unique advantage before winning AI contracts against Nvidia&#39;s killer products.</p><div><div></div></div><p>Imagine Nvidia maintaining its lead as the generative AI market grows. It&#39;s not hard to see the stock soaring even higher over the next few years.</p><h2><strong>Nvidia&#39;s potential downsides</strong></h2><p>On the other hand, the good financial news and a whole lot of forward-looking expectations are already priced into Nvidia&#39;s stock. Shares are changing hands at glossy valuation ratios such as 82 times free cash flow and 40 times sales -- levels usually reserved for small-cap start-ups with more sizzle than substance.</p><p>At the same time, Nvidia doesn&#39;t stand unchallenged in the AI accelerator market. Arch rival <strong>Advanced Micro Devices</strong> <span>(AMD<span> -0.77%</span>)</span> has its Instinct line of cost-effective AI chips. The <strong>Intel</strong> <span>(INTC<span> 1.74%</span>)</span> Gaudi series boasts impressive performance per watt of electric power. And that&#39;s just the top of a large heap. There&#39;s more than one way to design an AI-crunching system, and rival solutions may offer compelling alternatives for specific use cases. Who&#39;s to say that Nvidia will hang on to its market-defining lead in the long run?</p><p>Separately, the issues of high valuation and strong competition should be enough to give most investors pause before slamming that &#34;buy&#34; button on Nvidia stock. Together, it&#39;s a high-wire act with a long way down. Nvidia&#39;s stock is priced for perfection and any misstep -- such as a major AI contract lost to Intel or AMD -- will probably result in a quick and painful price drop.</p><div><div></div></div><h2><strong>Should you buy, sell, or hold Nvidia?</strong></h2><p>I&#39;m not saying you should sell every Nvidia share right now and never look back. The company could very well stave off the army of rivals and continue to innovate on a hard-to-match level. Indeed, a bit of Nvidia exposure could serve your portfolio well over the years.</p><p>Meanwhile, I highly recommend taking some profits off the table by selling a portion of your long-term Nvidia holdings. The gains are more than substantial and I&#39;m sure you can find more stable and secure ways to invest that money in the AI market.</p><p>So on the scale of buy, sell, or hold, I see Nvidia as a stock to hold for the long run. I&#39;d rather sell a few shares than buy more at these nosebleed-inducing share prices. Your mileage may vary, depending on your appetite for market risk and AI-driven excitement. Feel free to do your own research and reach different conclusions. The chip designer took an early lead in the AI hardware race, leading to incredible business results and skyrocketing stock prices.The stock traded at a split-adjusted $14 per share when OpenAI released the ChatGPT generative AI engine, powered by thousands of Nvidia AI accelerator chips. Today, Nvidia's share price has soared to $131. Let's find out.Nvidia's upsidesNvidia's financial success is indisputable. Revenues more than tripled year-over-year in the last two earnings reports. Free cash flows are consistently growing by about 500% in the same time frame. Microsoft (MSFT 1.31%) and Apple (AAPL 1.97%) are still more profitable than Nvidia, but the chip expert is catching up.Many market observers like to point out that the generative AI revolution is only getting started. ChatGPT is less than two years old. Only a couple of tech giants have come up with comparably powerful large language models (LLMs) so far, though many are working on their own long-term generative AI plans. Until further notice, Nvidia's accelerator chips are the gold standard against which other solutions must be measured. If you're building a strong AI system, Nvidia's solutions are the default and the industry standard. Others must develop and then prove some sort of unique advantage before winning AI contracts against Nvidia's killer products.Imagine Nvidia maintaining its lead as the generative AI market grows. It's not hard to see the stock soaring even higher over the next few years.Nvidia's potential downsidesOn the other hand, the good financial news and a whole lot of forward-looking expectations are already priced into Nvidia's stock. Shares are changing hands at glossy valuation ratios such as 82 times free cash flow and 40 times sales -- levels usually reserved for small-cap start-ups with more sizzle than substance.At the same time, Nvidia doesn't stand unchallenged in the AI accelerator market. Arch rival Advanced Micro Devices (AMD -0.77%) has its Instinct line of cost-effective AI chips. The Intel (INTC 1.74%) Gaudi series boasts impressive performance per watt of electric power. And that's just the top of a large heap. There's more than one way to design an AI-crunching system, and rival solutions may offer compelling alternatives for specific use cases. Who's to say that Nvidia will hang on to its market-defining lead in the long run?Separately, the issues of high valuation and strong competition should be enough to give most investors pause before slamming that \"buy\" button on Nvidia stock. Together, it's a high-wire act with a long way down. Nvidia's stock is priced for perfection and any misstep -- such as a major AI contract lost to Intel or AMD -- will probably result in a quick and painful price drop.Should you buy, sell, or hold Nvidia?I'm not saying you should sell every Nvidia share right now and never look back. The company could very well stave off the army of rivals and continue to innovate on a hard-to-match level. The gains are more than substantial and I'm sure you can find more stable and secure ways to invest that money in the AI market.So on the scale of buy, sell, or hold, I see Nvidia as a stock to hold for the long run. I'd rather sell a few shares than buy more at these nosebleed-inducing share prices. Your mileage may vary, depending on your appetite for market risk and AI-driven excitement.
