But if AI demand is genuine—if hyperscalers and enterprises continue expanding AI infrastructure and generating profits from it—then these massive investments won't look reckless. They'll be remembered as visionary, long-term bets made ahead of the curve.
What's even stranger is the market's mindset. If a company is sitting on a huge cash pile while demand clearly exceeds supply, Wall Street often expects management to use that cash for share buybacks instead of investing aggressively in future capacity.
Yet when companies choose to invest for long-term growth rather than engineer short-term earnings per share, investors panic. Has the market's thinking changed?
In reality, these headlines often become convenient post-hoc explanations for price movements. The exact same news can be spun as either bearish or bullish depending on how the market closes that day.
A strong earnings report? Bears will argue capital expenditures are too high and cash flow is under pressure. A rally? The very same spending is praised as confidence in AI's long-term future, with companies continuing to invest heavily in R&D and AI infrastructure.
Ultimately, the facts haven't changed—only the market's interpretation has.
