Afterdelivering a killer fiscal third quarterlate last month, investors seem to be awaiting the next catalyst to get behind the stock once again and push it to new all-time highs.
\n
The catalyst may be only about six to eight weeks away. This is when the iPhone 13, Apple’s second generation of 5G-capable mobile devices, is expected to be unveiled. At least one main feature may help to make this one yet another successful smartphone launch for the Cupertino company.
\n
Not all about 5G
\n
Even though one of the iPhone 12’s most talked-about feature is the ability to exchange data at 5G speeds, some believe that this is not the main appeal of the device to most consumers. 5G networks are still far from being fully developed, particularly outside China, and owning a 5G device today may not mean much to most users across most global markets.
\n
The same could also be said of the iPhone 13. To win the hearts and minds of Apple enthusiasts and encourage them to buy the new product, the company will probably need to offer other substantial feature upgrades. One of the most likely ones is a set of new applications for the cameras.
\n
Bloomberg has justreportedthat Apple will introduce three new camera features on the iPhone 13:
\n
\n
Portrait mode for videos, which allows for depth effects by blurring the background;
\n
ProRes, a higher-quality video format that gives pro users more options in post-production;
\n
New filters to enhance the look and colors of photos.
\n
\n
Will it be enough?
\n
The questions that Apple stock investors might be asking themselves is: will camera updates be enough to increase iPhone sales in the coming fiscal year? The answer is subject to personal opinions. Afterdelivering a killer fiscal third quarterlate last month, investors seem to be awaiting the next catalyst to get behind the stock once again and push it to new all-time highs.\nThe catalyst may be only about six to eight weeks away. This is when the iPhone 13, Apple’s second generation of 5G-capable mobile devices, is expected to be unveiled. At least one main feature may help to make this one yet another successful smartphone launch for the Cupertino company.\nNot all about 5G\nEven though one of the iPhone 12’s most talked-about feature is the ability to exchange data at 5G speeds, some believe that this is not the main appeal of the device to most consumers. 5G networks are still far from being fully developed, particularly outside China, and owning a 5G device today may not mean much to most users across most global markets.\nThe same could also be said of the iPhone 13. To win the hearts and minds of Apple enthusiasts and encourage them to buy the new product, the company will probably need to offer other substantial feature upgrades. One of the most likely ones is a set of new applications for the cameras.\nBloomberg has justreportedthat Apple will introduce three new camera features on the iPhone 13:\n\nPortrait mode for videos, which allows for depth effects by blurring the background;\nProRes, a higher-quality video format that gives pro users more options in post-production;\nNew filters to enhance the look and colors of photos.\n\nWill it be enough?\nThe questions that Apple stock investors might be asking themselves is: will camera updates be enough to increase iPhone sales in the coming fiscal year? The answer is subject to personal opinions. I believe that these three new features alone will not do the trick.\nHowever, the iPhone is proving to be more about the full package of benefits that it offers to its users than about one “killer” feature – be it camera, 5G connectivity, screen size, or other. I believe that the iPhone 13 has a good chance of doing well in fiscal 2022. They don’t look good enough to lift the stock materially, however.
\n
The line in the sand for Tesla (ticker: TSLA) investors was about 200,000 deliveries. More than that should have been good for the stock. Less would have been bad. That means the second-quarter number qualifies as a minor “beat” versus investor expectations.
\n
Tesla shares were down 0.3% at $675.68 in premarket trading.S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were up 0.2%. Shares higher, however in early trading Friday, up about 1.7%. The S&P 500 is 0.3% higher.
\n
Still, the second-quarter number is another quarterly record. Tesla delivered about 185,000 vehicles in the first quarter of 2021, compared with 181,000 in the fourth quarter of 2020 and about 88,000 vehicles in the first quarter of 2020. Growth is continuing, but with full-year expectations for about 865,000 deliveries for 2021, investors likely expected stronger growth.
\n
Tesla needs to deliver roughly 475,000 vehicles in the second half to hit Wall Street expectations. Tesla produced more than 206,000 vehicles in the second quarter, up from about 180,000 in the first quarter.
\n
Tesla doesn’t have formal guidance for full-year 2021 deliveries. Tesla expects to grow faster than 50% in 2021. The company delivered about 500,000 vehicles in 2020.
\n
The number doesn’t look like a big enough surprise to shake up Tesla stock, which has had an interesting year. Shares are down about 5% in the first quarter of the year, closing at roughly $668 a share. Shares traded above $900 in January. Shares gained about 2% in the second quarter, closing at about $680.
\n
Coming into Friday, shares are down a little year to date, trailing behind comparable gains of the overall market as well as many other automotive stocks that have benefited from the global economic recovery which is boosting auto sales.
\n
Many things impacted Tesla stock including rising interest rates—which hurts high growth stocks such as Tesla more than slow growth stocks such as traditional auto makers—and a semiconductor shortage that constrained auto production around the globe. It took a while for investors to adjust to those factors, as well as others, and for Tesla stock to bounce off recent lows.
\n
Chinese EV makers NIO(NIO) and XPeng(XPEV) also reported strong June deliveries. NIO stock opened higher Thursday and closed down 4.3%. XPeng shares opened higher as well and closed down 1.7%. Both stocks had a strong run in June. Investors appear to have sold on news.
\n
It looks like they may do the same with Tesla.
\n
Bullish investors have been waiting for a new catalyst to drive the stock out of its recent range. Second quarter deliveries could have been the catalyst, but they will probably be seen by the Street, and investors, as good and not great.
\n
Looking ahead, investors have new production coming from Texas and Germany to look forward to. That should happen close to the end of 2021. Tesla is also expected to offer its higher level of driver assistance software, dubbed Full Self Driving, on a subscription basis soon. The uptake of that product will be another thing closely watched by investors.
\n
Another potential catalyst for investors will be second quarter earnings which should be reported in late July. Wall Street projects about 95 cents in per share earnings from $11.3 billion in sales. Tesla earned 93 cents a share in the first quarter of 2021. Based on deliveries numbers look achievable, but factors such as regulatory credit sales always can impact Tesla’s bottom line number.
\n
Tesla earns and sells regulatory credits around the globe by making more than its fair share of zero emission vehicles.
\n

","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Tesla Reported Record Deliveries. Hence, the index slipped back beneath 92.000 within a 92.174-91.962 band before finding a base and awaiting the final US Markit manufacturing PMI, construction spending and ISM in particular for the survey breakdown and first jobs proxy for Friday’s NFP.
\n
\n
AUD/NZD/EUR/GBP - The Aussie and Kiwi have both regained some composure to pare overnight losses incurred on the back of further COVID restrictions, a Chinese manufacturing PMI miss, technical and cross-related factors. However, Aud/Usd remains heavy above 0.7350 and unlikely to trouble hefty option expiry interest at the 0.7400 strike (1.2 bn) ahead of the RBA tomorrow given expectations that the ongoing pandemic outbreaks could well force the Bank to backtrack on QE tapering plans. Meanwhile, Nzd/Usd is still rotating around the 21 DMA that comes in at 0.6979 today having failed to retain grasp of the 0.7000 handle, and the Euro is back below 1.1900 where 1.4 bn option expiries reside in wake of broadly softer than expected Eurozone manufacturing PMIs, bar Germany’s upgrade. Conversely, Cable is back over 1.3900 and Eur/Gbp is holding under 0.8550 following an unrevised final UK manufacturing PMI in advance of Thursday’s BoE.
\n
CAD/JPY/CHF - All very narrowly divergent vs the Greenback, and the Loonie holding up well in the face of weakness in WTI crude circa 1.2470, while the Yen is meandering from 109.60-77 in the run up to Tokyo inflation data on Tuesday and the Franc is straddling 0.9055 after in line Swiss CPI, a slowdown in retail sales vs pick up in the manufacturing PMI and weekly sight deposits showing just a small rise on domestic bank balances.
\n
SCANDI/EM - Contrasting manufacturing PMIs from Sweden and Norway, as the former dipped and latter gathered pace, but the Sek is straddling 10.2100 against the Eur with assistance from the aforementioned pick-up in overall risk appetite, while the Nok wanes within a 10.4910-10.4530 range due to a pull-back in Brent prices from Usd 75+/brl towards Usd 74.00.
\n
\n
In commodities,WTI and Brent have commenced the week on the backfoot, with the benchmarks lower by USD 1.00/bbl on the session. Such pressure comes in spite of the generally modestly constructive risk tone in a quiet European session with final PMIs not moving the dial much; with attention more on the weeks macro themes as outlined above. In crude specifics, updates have been very sparse throughout the session and as such the complex is more focus on COVID-19 related dynamics. With the demand-side of the equation torn between the ongoing case increases in Tokyo, among other areas, but on the flip-side supported by a push from top UK Cabinet Officials for an easing of travel restrictions and more broadly as NIH’s Fauci now does not believe the US is likely to return to lockdowns. Elsewhere, attention is on the geopolitical front and specifically last week’s attack on a ship off the Oman coast on which the US Secretary of State is confident that Iran is behind this attack. Moving to metals, spot gold and silver are modestly pressured with not too much read across from a choppy USD as we stand and likely on the back of the aforementioned broader risk tone; for reference, the yellow metal still holds the USD 1800/oz mark.
