Sales","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1116161119","media":"smart investor","summary":"Welcome to this week’s edition of top stock market highlights where we bring you the latest news and","content":"

Welcome to this week’s edition of top stock market highlights where we bring you the latest news and corporate events.

Bank home loan rates

The trio of local banks, namely DBS Group(SGX: D05), United Overseas Bank Ltd(SGX: U11), or UOB, and OCBC Ltd(SGX: O39), have once again raised the rates on their mortgage loan offerings.

The latest increase is in line withrising interest ratesas the US Federal Reserve hikes its benchmark policy rate to deal withsurging inflation.

Singapore’s largest bank, DBS, is raising its fixed-rate housing loan interest rate to 3.5% from the earlier 2.75%.

This new rate now applies to all four of the lender’s packages with tenors of between two to five years.

Meanwhile, UOB announced that its two-year and three-year fixed-rate home loans bear interest rates of 3.75% and 3.85%, respectively.

Not to be outdone, OCBC has revised its two-year fixed rate to 3.5%, up from 2.98% just a fortnight ago.

The bank is also re-launching its one-year fixed rate package at 3.35%.

With higher rates across the board, homeowners should be prepared to fork out more in interest payments when they refinance their housing loans.

Singapore retail sales

Retail sales continued to rise in Singapore in August, continuing the trend seen in July.

Sales increased 13% year on year in August, slightly lower than the 13.9% year on year chalked up in the previous month.

The latest increase did fall below the 15.4% that analysts had expected.

The estimated total retail sales value for August came in at S$3.8 billion, of which online sales took up a 12.5% share.

Despite the slightly weaker numbers, August’s retail sales still represented a fifth consecutive month of double-digit year on year growth.

At the same time, elevated core inflation could dampen consumer demand in the months to come.

Along with higher interest rates, more households may tighten their belts and cut back on spending to service higher mortgage payments.

SATS Ltd (SGX: S58)

SATS has seen its share price lose a fifth of its value since it announced theacquisition of Worldwide Flight Servicesfor almost S$1.64 billion.

Investors were concerned that the ground handler will finance the deal with a potential rights issue to raise the required S$1.7 billion to finance the purchase.

CEO Kerry Mok has come out to assure investors that the group is looking out for their interests and that a rights issue is one of four funding sources for the mega-deal.

He also acknowledged that SATS will have to scale down the size of the rights issue as in his own words: “the market does not like rights issues”.

In its original announcement for the acquisition, SATS had presented a funding plan that will involve the issuance of 609 million new shares at S$2.79 apiece.

The rights issue price was a steep discount of 28% to the food caterer’s then-closing price of S$3.87.

Other funding sources put forward include an acquisition bridge facility of €1.2 billion (around S$1.7 billion), internal cash resources, and new strategic investors.

The group may also tap into a mixture of the four sources to come up with an optimal plan to fund the acquisition.

Mok reiterated that investors should take a medium to long-term view of this deal as it will bring about tremendous benefits to SATS.

","source":"lsy1602567310727","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n<meta to this week’s edition of top stock market highlights where we bring you the latest news and corporate events.Bank home loan ratesThe trio of local banks, namely DBS Group(SGX: D05), United Overseas Bank Ltd(SGX: U11), or UOB, and OCBC Ltd(SGX: O39), have once again raised the rates on their mortgage loan offerings. The latest increase is in line withrising interest ratesas the US Federal Reserve hikes its benchmark policy rate to deal withsurging inflation.Singapore’s largest bank, DBS, is raising its fixed-rate housing loan interest rate to 3.5% from the earlier 2.75%.This new rate now applies to all four of the lender’s packages with tenors of between two to five years.Meanwhile, UOB announced that its two-year and three-year fixed-rate home loans bear interest rates of 3.75% and 3.85%, respectively. Not to be outdone, OCBC has revised its two-year fixed rate to 3.5%, up from 2.98% just a fortnight ago.The bank is also re-launching its one-year fixed rate package at 3.35%.With higher rates across the board, homeowners should be prepared to fork out more in interest payments when they refinance their housing loans.Singapore retail salesRetail sales continued to rise in Singapore in August, continuing the trend seen in July.Sales increased 13% year on year in August, slightly lower than the 13.9% year on year chalked up in the previous month. The latest increase did fall below the 15.4% that analysts had expected. The estimated total retail sales value for August came in at S$3.8 billion, of which online sales took up a 12.5% share.Despite the slightly weaker numbers, August’s retail sales still represented a fifth consecutive month of double-digit year on year growth. At the same time, elevated core inflation could dampen consumer demand in the months to come.Along with higher interest rates, more households may tighten their belts and cut back on spending to service higher mortgage payments.SATS Ltd (SGX: S58)SATS has seen its share price lose a fifth of its value since it announced theacquisition of Worldwide Flight Servicesfor almost S$1.64 billion.Investors were concerned that the ground handler will finance the deal with a potential rights issue to raise the required S$1.7 billion to finance the purchase.CEO Kerry Mok has come out to assure investors that the group is looking out for their interests and that a rights issue is one of four funding sources for the mega-deal.He also acknowledged that SATS will have to scale down the size of the rights issue as in his own words: “the market does not like rights issues”.In its original announcement for the acquisition, SATS had presented a funding plan that will involve the issuance of 609 million new shares at S$2.79 apiece. The rights issue price was a steep discount of 28% to the food caterer’s then-closing price of S$3.87.Other funding sources put forward include an acquisition bridge facility of €1.2 billion (around S$1.7 billion), internal cash resources, and new strategic investors. The group may also tap into a mixture of the four sources to come up with an optimal plan to fund the acquisition.Mok reiterated that investors should take a medium to long-term view of this deal as it will bring about tremendous benefits to SATS.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"S58.SI":0.9,"STI.SI":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":4026,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9994404733,"gmtCreate":1661665007823,"gmtModify":1676536558345,"author":{"id":"3582285484477860","authorId":"3582285484477860","name":"夜行星","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b30382b13e00165eba468359762783aa","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582285484477860","authorIdStr":"3582285484477860"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good","listText":"Good","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9994404733","repostId":"1161837457","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1161837457","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1661645647,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1161837457?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-08-28 Part of the earnings report card was the outlook for Nvidia's third fiscal quarter, which was significantly worse than expected. Nvidia is seeing a massiveslowdown in its Gaming business due to weakening demand and pricing for graphics processing units which have supported the chip maker's results last year. Because of the size of the expected revenue drop-off in FQ3'23, Nvidia's shares are likely set to correct further to the downside!

Nvidia's FQ2'23 earnings card was as expected

Nvidia's second quarter results largely conformed with the release of preliminary results from the beginning of August. Nvidia guided for $6.7B in FQ2 revenues due to a 33% year-over-year top line decrease in the Gaming segment. Actual revenues for Nvidia's FQ2'23 were indeed $6.7B, showing 3% growth year-over-year, but also a 19% drop-off compared to FQ1. Unfortunately, Nvidia's gross margins collapsed in the second fiscal quarter to 45.9%, showing a decrease of 21.1 PP quarter-over-quarter. The drop in revenues and gross margins was overwhelmingly caused by the Gaming segment which reported, as expected, a 44% quarter-over-quarter drop in revenues due toweakening demand for GPUs and declining pricing strengthfor Nvidia's graphic cards. Weakening pricing for GPUsalso affected AMDin the last quarter, but Nvidia is more reliant on GPU sales than AMD and therefore more affected than its rival by the slowdown in the industry.

Nvidia: Final FQ2'23 Results

Nvidia's Data Center revenues soared 61% year-over-year to $3.8B in FQ2 due to growing customer uptake of Nvidia's computing platforms that support data analysis and allow for the managing and scaling of artificial intelligence applications. Nvidia's Data Center business, because of the slowdown in the GPU segment, pulled ahead of Nvidia's Gaming segment regarding revenue generation in FQ2.

While Nvidia's Gaming business saw the biggest slowdown, the firm's 'OEM and Other' business -- which includes the sale of dedicated cryptocurrency mining processors/CMPs -- also slumped. Nvidia generated just $140M of OEM and Other revenues in FQ2, showing a decline of 66% year-over-year, due chiefly to decelerating demand for dedicated cryptocurrency mining processors. For those reasons, I don't see Nvidia developing its CMP business into a multi-billion dollar revenue opportunity, aspredicted previously, in the near term.

Nvidia: Segment Revenue Trends

Nightmarish guidance

The most important piece of new information in Nvidia's release was the outlook for FQ3. Nvidia expects revenues of $5.90B plus or minus $118M, which would mark another 12% quarter-over-quarter decrease in consolidated revenues, which comes on top of the 19% quarter-over-quarter drop in revenues in FQ2. On an annualized basis, FQ3 revenues are down 29% compared to the beginning of the year, which marks a massive slowdown in Nvidia's business. The revenue downgrade for FQ3 occurred as Nvidia expects the Gaming industry to adjust to lower GPU demand and work throughhigh inventory levels. Nvidia's revenue guidance of $5.9B for FQ3 compares to aconsensus FQ3 estimate of $6.9B, meaning actual guidance was a massive $1.0B below the most recent revenue prediction.

I expected a sequential down-turn in revenues, led by Gaming, and projected FQ3 revenues to be between $6.0B to $6.2B, which reflected a sequential decline of up to 10%. Apparently, the situation in the Gaming industry is even more serious for Nvidia than expected, and it will affect how the market generates revenue estimates and values the stock going forward.

My expectations for Nvidia going forward

I expect Nvidia to continue to expand its Data Center business as demand for cloud computing, AI applications and hyper-scale platforms is only going to grow. However, I expect growth in this segment to be overshadowed by continual declines and pricing weakness in the Gaming segment. Worldwide PC shipments are expected to decline 9.5% (according toGartner) in 2022, but I believe the drop could be even larger if a deeper US recession were to bite.

Since there is no short-term solution to getting rid of high inventories in the PC industry, I expect pricing weakness in the GPU market to weigh on Nvidia's revenue potential. I also expect the pricing trend for both NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 30 and AMD's Radeon RX 6000 to remain negative, with larger discounts to the manufacturer's suggested retail price possible. Nvidia's RTX 30 GPU was available at a 9% discount to MSRP in July. Given the high inventory levels in the PC market paired with a drop-off in GPU demand, I expect Nvidia's flagship graphics card to trade at even higher discount to the MSRP going forward.

Because of the headwinds in the Gaming business, I expect Nvidia to generate about $27B in full-year revenues in FY 2023 (down from $28B), which means the chip maker could see no year-over-year growth whatsoever this year.

NVDA Revenue (Quarterly YoY Growth) data by YCharts

Estimate and valuation risk

Nvidia's revenue estimates are now going to reset after the chip maker submitted a seriously bad guidance for its third fiscal quarter. As analysts incorporate Nvidia's FQ3'23 revenue guidance into their projections, Nvidia is likely going to see a massive, broad-based reduction for its FY 2023 revenue predictions. Since lofty revenue expectations have been used to justify Nvidia's generous valuation, a reset of expectations has the potential to drive a downward revaluation of Nvidia's shares.

Nvidia's shares dropped 4.6% after regular trading yesterday and, I believe, the drop does not accurately reflect the seriousness of the sequential revenue downgrade. Nvidia currently has a P-S ratio of 12.2x, and if revenue estimates continue to fall, the valuation factor may even increase.

NVDA Revenue Estimates for Current Fiscal Yeardata by YCharts

Other risks/considerations with Nvidia

I see two big risks for Nvidia at this point in time. The first one is that the slowdown in the GPU market may last for quite some time, meaning Nvidia may have to deal with slowing Gaming segment revenues for more than just one more quarter. This is because thePC market is in a declinewhich affects the shipment of Nvidia's GPUs. Secondly, revenue and earnings estimates, especially after the nightmarish guidance for FQ3'23, will reflect a reset of growth expectations which in itself could lead Nvidia's shares into a new down-leg.

Final thoughts

Shares of Nvidia dropped 4.6% after the market closed, but I believe the sharpness of the expected revenue decline in FQ3 is not accurately reflected in this drop. The guidance truly is a game-changer because Nvidia's period of hyper-growth is ending.

Nvidia's outlook for FQ3'23 revenues was $1.0B below expectations and the company is going through a major post-pandemic reset in the GPU market… which could affect Nvidia's valuation much more severely going forward. As estimates correct to the downside, Nvidia's valuation is set to experience more pressure!

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Nvidia: Guidance Is A Game-Changer
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nNvidia: Guidance Is A Game-Changer\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-08-28 08:14 GMT+8 Seeking Alpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
SummaryMassive slowdown in the Gaming business is affecting Nvidia’s revenue prospects.Revenue guidance for FQ3 was a real shocker as the outlook underperformed estimates by $1.0B.Nvidia’s FY 2023 ...
\n\nSource Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"NVDA":"英伟达"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4537353-nvidia-nvda-guidance-game-changer","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1161837457","content_text":"SummaryMassive slowdown in the Gaming business is affecting Nvidia’s revenue prospects.Revenue guidance for FQ3 was a real shocker as the outlook underperformed estimates by $1.0B.Nvidia’s FY 2023 revenue estimates are set for a major downward revision.Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) finally released highly anticipated earnings for its second fiscal quarter of FY 2023. Wilson warned, as investors struggle to find havens amid fears of a recession and aggressive tightening by the Federal Reserve.“With defensive stocks now expensive and offering little absolute upside, the S&P 500 appears ready to join the ongoing bear market,” said Morgan Stanley strategists in a note on Monday. “The market has been so picked over at this point, it’s not clear where the next rotation lies. In our experience, when that happens, it usually means the overall index is about to fall sharply with almost all stocks falling in unison.”The S&P 500 Index has slumped for three weeks in a row, sinking to the lowest level since mid-March on Friday as investors fled risk assets amid fears of rapid monetary tightening and its impact on economic growth. Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s endorsement of aggressive actions to curb inflation sent traders racing to price in half-percentage-point interest-rate increases at the bank’s next four meetings.Morgan Stanley strategists said a quickly tightening Fed is looking “right into the teeth of a slowdown” and that while defensive positioning has worked well since November, they don’t see more upside for these stocks as their valuations have swelled. At the same time, the strategists said that large-cap pharma and biotech shares’ defensive characteristics make them consistent outperformers in an environment of slowing earnings growth, decelerating PMIs and tighter monetary policy.“As the U.S. economy moves to a late cycle phase and GDP/earnings growth rates decelerate for the overall economy and market, we think Pharma/Biotech’s defensive properties will outweigh policy concern and drive relative performance higher,” they wrote.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{".SPX":0.9,".IXIC":0.9,".DJI":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1352,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9014778610,"gmtCreate":1649722241910,"gmtModify":1676534556973,"author":{"id":"3582285484477860","authorId":"3582285484477860","name":"夜行星","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b30382b13e00165eba468359762783aa","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582285484477860","authorIdStr":"3582285484477860"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"👍","listText":"👍","text":"👍","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9014778610","repostId":"1180736096","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1315,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9036897486,"gmtCreate":1647041297042,"gmtModify":1676534189439,"author":{"id":"3582285484477860","authorId":"3582285484477860","name":"夜行星","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b30382b13e00165eba468359762783aa","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582285484477860","authorIdStr":"3582285484477860"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"🤮😂","listText":"🤮😂","text":"🤮😂","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9036897486","repostId":"1177275270","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1177275270","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1647003983,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1177275270?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-03-11 21:06","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Price Target Changes|JD.com Cut to $91by HSBC; Oracle Lowered to to $70 by Piper Sandler","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1177275270","media":"benzinga","summary":"Needham cut the price target on OppFi Inc. SOFI stock is locked in a brutal bear market, withshares down more than 50% from their November high.Unfortunately, this is just how bear markets go. I have been bullish on SOFI stock for a while, specifically below $15 a share. Admittedly, that doesn’t make for a great return, with shares currently trading at $12 and change. But, on the plus side, I wasn’t pounding the table for SOFI stock above $20, either.Even though SOFI stock has beenthrashed in a difficult investing environment, there are a number ofpositives to consider.A Closer Look at SOFI StockWhen I look at the chart for SoFi (more on the technicals in a minute), I see some pretty big spikes higher. One came in early November when many growth stocks were at multi-month lows.SOFI stock soared back toward its Q2 highs following better-than-expected earnings.Another rally — this one much more short-lived — came in mid-January. Shares popped on news SoFi received regulatory approval to become a national bank. That even drew a price target upgrade to $30 from one analyst. From current levels, that would imply a return in excess of 145%.While these rallies in SOFI stock did not stick due to the overall downtrend in the stock market, they are promising developments for when the dust eventually settles.SoFi Technologies is expected to deliver its next quarterly earnings report on March 1. It’s totally possible that it disappoints. But I’m not looking at SOFI stock as a one- or two-quarter play. I am looking at the long term.Long-term estimates are hard to pin down. Let’s face it, a lot can happen between now and a few quarters from now, let alonea few years. That said, analysts are anticipating 44% revenue growth to $1.44 billion for next year. And they expect revenue to increase at a compound annual rate of around 40% through 2024.The downside to all of this? That SoFi isn’t profitable yet and not forecast to be for a couple of years. The upside is that if it can grow in this manner, that’s pretty darn impressive. I can’t imagine the stock price still trading at today’s levels if that’s the case.Trading SOFI StockFollowing that freakish explosion at the start of 2021, SoFi stock pulled back and bottomed at $13.14. While that level went untouched for the remainder of the year, it’s playing quite the role now, mainly as resistance.SOFI stock has technically put in a series of higher lows. However, it’s my opinion, that all it would take is one good flush to the downside to retest last month’s low at $10.51.Without knowing when the market sell-off will end or how far it will ultimately go, it’s hard to know when or if SOFI stock has bottomed. The Bottom Line on SOFI StockFrom here, though, I would love to see a move back above the Q4 low at $13.66, as well as the 50-day moving average. That could really open the door to higher prices, putting $15 to $16.50 in play. The latter part of that range is last month’s high.On the downside, SoFi is trying to hold the 10-day and 21-day moving averages as support. However, there’s no guarantee that will be the case.If it can’t reclaim and hold these measures, a move back below $12 could put the $10.50 level in play. Bulls can be hopeful that this won’t happen, but they have to be realistic and understand that it could.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"SOFI":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1221,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9095401175,"gmtCreate":1644969184930,"gmtModify":1676533980692,"author":{"id":"3582285484477860","authorId":"3582285484477860","name":"夜行星","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b30382b13e00165eba468359762783aa","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582285484477860","authorIdStr":"3582285484477860"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Grab Holdings(GRAB)$[Miser] [Miser] ","listText":"$Grab Holdings(GRAB)$[Miser] [Miser] ","text":"$Grab Holdings(GRAB)$[Miser] [Miser]","images":[{"img":"https://static.itradeup.com/news/9a3a4e688619520502e212d3c9ad1f84","width":"1125","height":"3660"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9095401175","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1394,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9095132486,"gmtCreate":1644849376414,"gmtModify":1676533967598,"author":{"id":"3582285484477860","authorId":"3582285484477860","name":"夜行星","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b30382b13e00165eba468359762783aa","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582285484477860","authorIdStr":"3582285484477860"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Join it ","listText":"Join it ","text":"Join it","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9095132486","repostId":"9004448317","repostType":1,"repost":{"id":9004448317,"gmtCreate":1642676525258,"gmtModify":1676533734534,"author":{"id":"3527667667103859","authorId":"3527667667103859","name":"TigerEvents","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/c266ef25181ace18bec1262357bbe1a8","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3527667667103859","authorIdStr":"3527667667103859"},"themes":[],"title":"Join Tiger Ski Championship, Win a Bonus of Up to USD 2022","htmlText":"2022 is the Year of Tiger in Chinese lunar calendar, it’s also a special year for Tiger Brokers. (Getty Images)
\n
Chinese electric-vehicle maker Nio Inc., which sells no cars in the U.S., has a market capitalization of $60.2 billion. By that measure, it is larger than Ford Motor Co., which was founded in 1903.
\n
That might make sense to you as an investor -- after all, Nio is an innovative company that sells only electric vehicles. Ford is a legacy auto maker that is working to catch up and eventually make a full transition to electric vehicles. Shares of Nio have more than tripled in the past year, while Ford's have almost doubled after cratering in the previous decade.
\n
So where does Nio $(NIO)$, which reported second-quarter results after the stock market closes Wednesday, fit in an investment thesis? Below are screens showing how its stock valuation compares to vehicle production, and how that valuation relates to projected earnings through 2025.
\n
Doubling car production
\n
For the second quarter, Nio delivered 21,896 vehicles for a 112% increase from a year earlier. The growth is impressive, but the total number of vehicles sold is still relatively small.
\n
Here's a look at the 10 largest auto makers by market capitalization, along with their second-quarter sales or delivery numbers (whichever was higher, if both were reported) and additional color below the table:
\n\n
\n
\n

\n
\n
\n
You can see that those valuations are about the future, when innovators in the EV space -- Tesla Inc. and Nio, on this list -- may (or may not) become as large as legacy players.
\n
For now, Ford churns out mostly internal combustion engine vehicles at nearly 35 times the rate that Nio makes EVs.
\n
One thing to be aware of is that the legacy auto makers don't all report their unit sales the same way. Most don't break out electric vehicle sales.
\n
Among those that do, definitions vary. For example, Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.TO) reported that \"electrified vehicle\" sales made up 26.6% of total auto sales during the second quarter. But that category includes:
\n
For Toyota, BEV made up only 0.2% of second-quarter sales, while they accounted for 100% of sales for Nio and Tesla. Toyota's PHEV sales made up 1.4% of the total.
\n
Volkswagen AG reports electric-vehicle sales as including PHEV, which accounted for 6.7% of second-quarter sales, or BEV, which made up 4.4% of total sales. Those are impressive numbers: a combined 11.1%.
\n
For Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft , better known as BWM Group, a second-quarter breakdown of electric-vehicle deliveries isn't yet available, but for the first half of 2021, 153,243 all-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles were delivered, or 11.4% of total deliveries.
\n
Valuation to earnings estimates
\n
For companies at early stages, comparisons of price-to-earnings ratios may not mean very much. Such companies are focusing on growth rather than profits. An example of this has been Amazon.com Inc. $(AMZN)$, which has traded at a high P/E for decades as it has worked to expand into new lines of business, at the expense of the bottom line.
\n
A high P/E ratio can reflect investors' enthusiasm for innovation and in the case of EVs, a political consensus for transforming the industry. So Nio and Tesla trade at much higher P/E ratios than the legacy auto makers.
\n
Then again, very low P/E may show too much contempt among investors for the older manufacturers, as they use their cash flow from continuing massive sales of traditional vehicles to fund their development of EVs. Opportunities may be highlighted.
\n
Normally a forward P/E ratio is calculated by dividing the share price by a rolling consensus estimate of earnings per share for 12 months. This isn't available for all the companies listed here, so we're using consensus estimates for net income for calendar 2022.
\n
First, here are P/E ratios based on current market caps and consensus 2022 estimates among analysts polled by FactSet. The table includes the annual estimates going out to 2025, and also a P/E based on current market caps and the 2025 estimates:
\n\n
Nio is expected to become profitable in 2023. Looking out to 2024, its forward P/E is lower than that of Tesla. To put the forward P/E valuations in perspective, the S&P 500 Index trades for a weighted 20.5 times consensus 2022 EPS estimates.
\n
Valuation to sales
\n
\n
\n

\n

\n
\n
\n
Forward price-to-sales estimates might be more useful for early-stage companies that are showing low profits or net losses. But investors are bullish on the Chinese electric-vehicle maker's prospects.\nA Nio store in downtown Shanghai. (Getty Images)\nChinese electric-vehicle maker Nio Inc., which sells no cars in the U.S., has a market capitalization of $60.2 billion. By that measure, it is larger than Ford Motor Co., which was founded in 1903.\nThat might make sense to you as an investor -- after all, Nio is an innovative company that sells only electric vehicles. Ford is a legacy auto maker that is working to catch up and eventually make a full transition to electric vehicles. Shares of Nio have more than tripled in the past year, while Ford's have almost doubled after cratering in the previous decade.\nSo where does Nio $(NIO)$, which reported second-quarter results after the stock market closes Wednesday, fit in an investment thesis? Below are screens showing how its stock valuation compares to vehicle production, and how that valuation relates to projected earnings through 2025.\nDoubling car production\nFor the second quarter, Nio delivered 21,896 vehicles for a 112% increase from a year earlier. The growth is impressive, but the total number of vehicles sold is still relatively small.\nHere's a look at the 10 largest auto makers by market capitalization, along with their second-quarter sales or delivery numbers (whichever was higher, if both were reported) and additional color below the table:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou can see that those valuations are about the future, when innovators in the EV space -- Tesla Inc. and Nio, on this list -- may (or may not) become as large as legacy players.\nFor now, Ford churns out mostly internal combustion engine vehicles at nearly 35 times the rate that Nio makes EVs.\nOne thing to be aware of is that the legacy auto makers don't all report their unit sales the same way. Most don't break out electric vehicle sales.\nAmong those that do, definitions vary. For example, Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.TO) reported that \"electrified vehicle\" sales made up 26.6% of total auto sales during the second quarter. But that category includes:\nFor Toyota, BEV made up only 0.2% of second-quarter sales, while they accounted for 100% of sales for Nio and Tesla. Toyota's PHEV sales made up 1.4% of the total.\nVolkswagen AG reports electric-vehicle sales as including PHEV, which accounted for 6.7% of second-quarter sales, or BEV, which made up 4.4% of total sales. Those are impressive numbers: a combined 11.1%.\nFor Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft , better known as BWM Group, a second-quarter breakdown of electric-vehicle deliveries isn't yet available, but for the first half of 2021, 153,243 all-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles were delivered, or 11.4% of total deliveries.\nValuation to earnings estimates\nFor companies at early stages, comparisons of price-to-earnings ratios may not mean very much. Such companies are focusing on growth rather than profits. An example of this has been Amazon.com Inc. $(AMZN)$, which has traded at a high P/E for decades as it has worked to expand into new lines of business, at the expense of the bottom line.\nA high P/E ratio can reflect investors' enthusiasm for innovation and in the case of EVs, a political consensus for transforming the industry. So Nio and Tesla trade at much higher P/E ratios than the legacy auto makers.\nThen again, very low P/E may show too much contempt among investors for the older manufacturers, as they use their cash flow from continuing massive sales of traditional vehicles to fund their development of EVs. Opportunities may be highlighted.\nNormally a forward P/E ratio is calculated by dividing the share price by a rolling consensus estimate of earnings per share for 12 months. This isn't available for all the companies listed here, so we're using consensus estimates for net income for calendar 2022.\nFirst, here are P/E ratios based on current market caps and consensus 2022 estimates among analysts polled by FactSet. The table includes the annual estimates going out to 2025, and also a P/E based on current market caps and the 2025 estimates:\n\nNio is expected to become profitable in 2023. Looking out to 2024, its forward P/E is lower than that of Tesla. To put the forward P/E valuations in perspective, the S&P 500 Index trades for a weighted 20.5 times consensus 2022 EPS estimates.\nValuation to sales\n\n\n\n\n\n\nForward price-to-sales estimates might be more useful for early-stage companies that are showing low profits or net losses. Then again, the same distortions apply: Investors love the pure-play EV makers now, and may be paying too much for them when you consider that shares of Nio have more than tripled over the past year, while Tesla's stock has risen 150%.\nHere's a similar set of data driving price-to-sale ratios, again using current market caps (in the first table at the top of this article) and consensus full-calendar-year estimates in millions of U.S. dollars:\n\nFor reference, the S&P 500 trades for 2.7 times its consensus 2022 sales estimate.\n\n\n\n\n\nAnalysts' opinions\nHere's a summary of opinion of the 10 auto makers among analysts polled by FactSet.
