stock Voice Network is mired in losses.

On August 16, SoundNet, once highly sought after by capital, released its financial report for the second quarter of 2022. In the second quarter, SoundNet's total revenue was US$40.98 million, a year-on-year decrease of 3.2%. In the first half of the year, SoundNet's total operating revenue was US$79.56 million, a year-on-year decrease of 4%. The company reported a net loss of $30.7 million for the quarter, compared to $15.4 million in the same period last year. The net loss increased by 99.4% year-on-year, almost doubling, setting a new record for losses.

SoundNet is very satisfied with its quarterly financial report. Zhao Bin, founder and CEO of SoundNet, said, \"Our operating results in the second quarter were strong, returning to the quarterly growth trend. SoundNet's real-time interactive cloud services are widely recognized in the global market, and user demand is increasing.\"

In the capital market, this is certainly not a satisfactory answer for investors. SoundNet did not provide much interpretation of the losses, nor did it introduce how to reduce them in the future. Instead, it repeatedly emphasized that \"SoundNet provides scenario solution services and has always maintained the number one position in the RTC (audio and video communication) market share, and that more and more innovative scenarios will be discovered in the future.\" In fact, investors are more concerned about how SoundNet can reduce losses and how to make a profit.

Zhao Bin's confidence failed to gain recognition from the capital market. After the financial report was released, Shengwang's stock price fell sharply. On August 30, the stock price was $4.14 during trading, a drop of nearly 80% from the issue price of $20 per share. On its first day of trading, Shengwang opened at $45.00 per share and closed at $50.50 per share, a 152.5% increase from the issue price. The highest point of the stock price was $114.97 per share in February 2021. At its peak, Shengwang's market value had evaporated by 96.4%.

I wonder if Shengwang is still satisfied with this result?Seven consecutive quarters of losses

Shengwang is a B2B service provider that offers live streaming services on Momo.lycheeAll voice live streaming services are backed by the technical support of SoundNet. It primarily provides developers with a variety of services such as real-time video and real-time audio, covering more than 20 industry sectors and more than 200 scenarios. Education is one of the most important pillars of SoundNet, and online education once supported most of SoundNet's paying users.

The COVID-19 pandemic that emerged at the end of 2019 directly boosted online education, causing education to rapidly shift from offline to online, which brought considerable revenue to Shengwang. In March 2020 alone, SoundNet's online education customer base increased more than sevenfold. In 2020, online education institutions contributed 14% of revenue, and the revenue share further climbed to 25% in the second quarter of 2021.

With the implementation of the double reduction policy in July 2021, K-12 online education in China almost suffered a catastrophe. This \"total annihilation\" led to the loss of some of Shengwang's education customers. In the fourth quarter of 2021, revenue declined by more than 10 percentage points quarter-on-quarter, and in this quarter, revenue declined by 3.2% year-on-year. It can be seen that the loss of online education customers has had a significant impact on Shengwang.

Before the implementation of the \"double reduction\" policy, SoundNet's net expansion rate based on US dollars reached 131% in the first quarter of 2021. After the implementation of the \"double reduction\" policy, this figure dropped to 95% in the second quarter of 2022. It is evident that online education customers are Shengwang's main customers, and the loss of cornerstone users has become a major reason for Shengwang's turnaround from profit to loss.

Financial data from recent quarters shows that SoundNet was once profitable, with profits of around $3 million in the first and second quarters of 2020 respectively. However, it subsequently turned from profit to loss, and has been in a loss-making state since the third quarter of 2020. Apart from profits of around $3 million in the first and second quarters, all other quarterly reports are in a loss-making state. So far, seven quarterly reports have shown losses to varying degrees. The full fiscal year with the smallest loss was 2020, with a loss of $3.12 million.

SoundNet's largest full-year loss was in 2021, reaching $72.36 million. The total loss in the first and second quarters of 2022 was $57.62 million, bringing the cumulative loss to $140 million. It only took Shengwang two years to go from a profitable company to one that was constantly losing money.

To explore new business growth, in the fourth quarter of 2021, SoundNet announced its entry into metaverse. At that time, metaverse was very popular, and SoundNet hoped that this following trend would improve its deteriorating financial situation. It successively launched three major solutions for the fields of interactive social networking, karaoke and live streaming: YuanYuChat, YuanKaraoke and YuanLive. However, metaverse is currently in the early stages of development, and these new businesses launched by SoundNet are not yet mature and will take time to be implemented. It is unrealistic to expect to gain revenue in the short term.

Fang Junhua, a cloud service practitioner, believes that Shengwang's entry into metaverse is not only due to its own business development bottlenecks and its desire to seek new growth points, but also an explanation to investors. After all, its market value has evaporated by nearly 97% in the two years since its listing, which will never satisfy investors.

Fang Junhua pointed out: \"Investors have begun to vote with their feet in the face of Sheng.com's repeated poor performance. The original major shareholders, such as Shunwei Capital and Coatue PE Asia, have all disappeared. To some extent, the significant reduction in holdings indicates that investors are not optimistic about Sheng.com's development prospects. If it cannot find new business growth points, Sheng.com's losses will continue.\"\"False Prosperity\" of User Growth

Sheng.com's biggest troubles stem not only from its revenue, but also from problems with its users.

Financial reports show that as of the second quarter of 2022, SoundNet had more than 475,000 registered applications worldwide, a year-on-year increase of 41%, and the number of active customers worldwide reached 2,877, a year-on-year increase of 17.5%. This seemingly impressive data is, after all, the number of users is an important indicator of a company's value.

However, the so-called active customer standard defined by SoundNet is not high; anyone who spends more than $100 on SoundNet is considered an active customer. In fact, from the second quarter of 2021 to the end of this quarter, the absolute number of active users of Shengwang increased by 428. While the number of active users may seem to have increased, the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic has directly led to a decrease in consumption desire, with the spending amount of active users of Shengwang decreasing by about 5% year-on-year.

Referring to the recent revenue and cost expenditure ratio of Shengwang, it can be seen that Shengwang does not have a cornerstone customer like online education, which has a significant impact. In the second quarter of 2022, SoundNet's total revenue was US$41 million, gross profit was US$26.6 million, and gross profit margin was 64.9%. In the first quarter of 2021, before the implementation of the double reduction policy, SoundNet's total revenue was US$40.2 million, gross profit was US$23.4 million, and gross profit margin was 58.2%.

While Sheng.com's gross profit margin may seem to have increased by 6.7%, considering the difference in the number of active users, the revenue difference between the two is only 800,000 yuan, which shows that active users cannot be Sheng.com's \"reliance\". Because there were 2,877 active users in the second quarter of 2022 and only 2,324 active users in the first quarter of 2021, the difference between the two is 553. These 553 active users only contributed 800,000 yuan in revenue in a year.

Comparing these two periods, SoundNetwork's sales and marketing expenses in the first quarter of 2021 were $8.7 million; This expense surged to $13.1 million in the second quarter of 2022. The surge in marketing expenses may be due to increased advertising spending by SoundNet after losing K-12 users. In its second-quarter report, SoundNet also explained that the significant increase in marketing expenses was due to advertising expenses.

Both the total number of users and active users are increasing, butNet profitHowever, the company experienced a continuous decline and even losses from 2018 to 2021. The net profit for the full fiscal years of 2018 to 2021 was US$376,000, -US$6.18 million, -US$3.12 million and -US$72.36 million, respectively. The loss in 2021 was 23 times that of 2020. The loss in the first half of 2022 already reached $57.62 million, and this year is likely to be the first time that the loss in a single year has exceeded $100 million.

Regardless of the reason, Shengwang has now experienced a strange phenomenon of increasing user growth but not increasing profits, resulting in a false prosperity where users grow but revenue \"does not grow\".

Investor Liu Bo believes that the growth of paying users of Shengwang is actually a blind spot. \"After losing its online education customers, it has a lot of retail users and no core users, which makes it invest more and more energy in making more and more products. However, the customer base of a single product has decreased, and the revenue effectiveness and profit ratio have also decreased accordingly. This can be reflected in the fact that the number of active users has increased so much, but the revenue has hardly changed.\"Overseas expansion is not a panacea

Zhao Bin, founder and CEO of SoundNet, particularly emphasized the growth rate of overseas markets, most likely to reduce investors' concerns. The financial report specifically pointed out that its expansion rate in Europe and the United States, especially the US market, denominated in US dollars, reached 130%.

According to the ranking data of the well-known website ALEXA, VoiceNet ranks third in the US market, and its growth rate is indeed very fast. However, the number of unique visitors logged in by a single IP is 89,600, and the total number of visits is 268,000. While the numbers seem good, the efficiency value is not high. In other words, PV/UV can be used to calculate the number of visits to a single IP. As a result, VoiceNet has less than 3 visits to a single IP.

If this calculation is inaccurate, then looking at the data in the table above, the proportion of website visits by US users is 9.4%, while the proportion of page views is only 6.2%. Page views account for 66% of website visits. The number of unique IPs visiting websites in the US every day is 8,422, and the number of page views is approximately 5,555.

According to media statistics, the Voice Network website was accessed 16,616 times. Neither 5,555 nor 16,616 times can be considered a huge number. The growth rate is quite gratifying, but the overall influence is still relatively weak.

According to media reports, VoiceNet's profit model is free plus value-added. Each user can use 10,000 minutes for free per month, and only the excess portion will be charged. This is similar to the packages of China Mobile and China Unicom, but the difference is that China Mobile and China Unicom's packages are paid, while VoiceNet's package is free. A 10,000-minute free trial per month means you can get 333 minutes of free trial per day, or 5.5 hours, which is almost completely free.

According to VoiceNet's rules, overseas customers can apply for a certain amount of free time as a test and can choose whether to pay after the test ends. Judging from the number of paying users that Shengwang has grown within a year, the conversion rate of paying users is astonishingly low. This may be a concession made by Shengwang in order to expand into overseas markets. However, if Shengwang wants to grow revenue and ultimately achieve profitability, it needs to continuously expand its customer base and increase customer usage time in order to achieve profitability. Paying users are a key factor, and the low conversion rate of paying users will affect its profitability.

Compared to markets it hadn't entered before, achieving a 130% growth rate is not difficult; the challenge lies in maintaining this growth rate indefinitely.

However, most companies going global still regard overseas markets as one of the ways to diversify their development, and the dominant position of the Chinese market will not waver. Once Shengwang bets its money on overseas markets, thinking it has found a magic key to growth, it may put the cart before the horse.

Internet analyst Chen Xiaoyu believes that the rapid growth of overseas expansion may create some illusions for SoundNet's senior management. \"High overseas growth may cause SoundNet to neglect the Chinese market, which is currently the most promising market in the world. How to stabilize its advantages in the domestic market and expand new customers to form a cornerstone customer base is the issue that SoundNet should focus on. It cannot simply develop a strategy to meet the needs of overseas users. ,"news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"API":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":903,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":110501905,"gmtCreate":1622466094107,"gmtModify":1704184792205,"author":{"id":"3582682141485086","authorId":"3582682141485086","name":"71个百分之20","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/01cb1e2e4e59cfe31878a5b041141c54","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582682141485086","authorIdStr":"3582682141485086"},"themes":[],"title":"","htmlText":"。","listText":"。","text":"。"
