But last week, their party suffered a serious setback. Occidental Petroleum(NYSE:OXY), for example, abruptly fell 25%.

Today, I will answer the question if it is time to buy the dip in OXY stock. Over the last two weeks, the list had more oil stock questions than ever before. OXY is always at the top of the list, followed byExxon(NYSE:XOM) andChevron(NYSE:CVX). I can personally vouch for the quality of the latter two. And apparently, Mr. Warren Buffet’s team loves OXY stock. Regardless, my apprehension for owning the stock comes from the narrative.

If it spikes, I am looking to re-short it, like I did in early June. There are warning signs of buyer exhaustion. I could not recently rally even on news thatMr. Buffet added to his position. Frankly, he is going against his mantra. Normally, he preaches being cautious when everyone is greedy. In this case, he is making everyone greedy because of his accumulation of it. The difference is that we cannot trade like a billionaire. His goal is not to profit from the stock price. He’s probably looking to own the company’s cash flow eventually.

What is dangerous here is that not enough people are considering that the correction has just begun. There is a realistic technical scenario that places OXY stock near $45 per share. This would become a target if OXY stock falls below $54.30. The bulls will have a last chance effort at $51.70, but then it’s game over. The February rally was too violent and may have created a weak pocket that needs revisiting. I would not advise shorting it immediately. Wait until more ticks unfold this and next week.

How I Will Trade OXY Stock

From a trading perspective, if OXY rekindles it upside trajectory, I would repurchase put options. The levels I would deem short-able are near $65, or even better near $70 per share.

Once again, I’d like to point out that I don’t have much beef with the quality of the company. I’ve taken issue with the oil rhetoric, which was the cause for the immensely unreasonable rally. The OXY stock metrics are this good now only because of the higher commodity prices. This is not an explosion in production story. They last reported a huge$2.13 increase to income per share. However, production was only up 1.6% compared to last year’s. This is by definition a temporary situation, so it’s risky to assume it will persist.

Experts would have us believe that demand for energy is exploding. But in reality, demand is still below pre-pandemic levels. In addition, all major car manufacturers have committed to killing fossil fuel projects. If that’s the case, then the demand curve is about to take a tumble. It’s not an opinion, but a mathematical fact. Whether you love chasing after the innovative capacity of growth stocks or prefer the simplicity of value stocks, either strategy can work wonders over the long run.

But when it comes to wealth building, few investing strategies have been more consistent than buying dividend stocks.

Although it's a report I reference often, J.P. Morgan Asset Management's comparison of the performance of dividend-paying stocks to those not paying a dividend over multiple decades speaks wonders. J.P. Morgan Asset Management, a division of money-center bank JPMorgan Chase, found that dividend-paying companies returned an annual average of 9.5% between 1972 and 2012. By comparison, the companies not paying a dividend crawled to an annualized return of 1.6% over the same period.

Over time, we should expect dividend stocks to outperform. Companies that parse out a dividend on a regular basis are often profitable, time-tested, and have transparent long-term outlooks. These are typically companies that won't keep investors awake at night with worry.

Ideally, income seekers want the highest dividend yield possible with the least amount of risk. However, risk and yield tend to correlate once yields hit 4% or above. In other words, high-yielding stocks can be yield traps -- i.e., companies with enticingly high yields where the underlying business model is struggling or broken.

The good news is that not all high-yielding stocks are bad news. The following three ultra-high-yielding stocks, which are averaging (yes, averaging) a 12.32% dividend yield, can generate $2,000 in annual dividend income with an initial investment of only $16,250 (split evenly, three ways).

Annaly Capital Management: 12.12% yield

Mortgage real estate investment trust (REIT) Annaly Capital Management (NYSE:NLY) is no stranger to ultra-high-yield dividend stock lists. It's perhaps the most-trusted ultra-high-yield stock, with an average yield of around 10% over the past two decades. The company has also doled out more than $20 billion in dividend income since its inception in 1997.

Mortgage REITs like Annaly have a relatively straightforward operating model, even if the securities they own can be somewhat complex. Annaly is looking to borrow money at the lowest short-term rate possible, and use this capital to purchase higher-yielding long-term assets, like mortgage-backed securities (MBSs). The wider the gap between the average yield on MBSs and the average borrowing rate (this difference is known as the net interest margin), the more money mortgage REITs like Annaly can make.

As you might imagine, the mortgage REIT operating model tends to be interest-rate sensitive, with lower rates often providing the best environment for companies like Annaly to thrive. Over the past couple of months, the interest rate yield curve has flattened a bit, with the 2-year and 10-year yields on U.S. Treasury bonds narrowing. Since the 10-year Treasury bond is a good predictor for where mortgage rates head next, this tightening has resulted in a shrinking book value for Annaly.

But if you pan out beyond just the next couple of quarters, there's a lot to be excited about. If the Federal Reserve does raise lending rates, as expected, it'll also lift the yields on the MBSs Annaly is purchasing. Over time, this will widen the company's net interest margin.

What's more, the interest rate yield curve spends a disproportionately longer period of time in steepening than it does flattening. That's because the U.S. economy spends years expanding, compared to a couple of months or a few quarters in recession. In short, patience should pay off handsomely for Annaly's shareholders.

Icahn Enterprises: 14.44% yield

Another high-yielding dividend stock that can deliver an enormous amount of income from a relatively small investment is diversified holding company Icahn Enterprises (NASDAQ:IEP). This master limited partnership has paid a quarterly distribution for nearly 17 consecutive years and is currently yielding north of 14%!

There are two key reasons Icahn Enterprises is a smart buy for patient, income-seeking investors (aside from its insanely high yield). First, you get the leadership of Carl Icahn, who's the founder of the company and the chairman of the board of directors. Icahn is arguably one of the best-known activist investors on Wall Street. Activist investors usually buy up a single-digit-percentage stake in a company with the goal of gaining board seats or effecting change(s) to increase shareholder value. Sometimes this means pushing for the sale of noncore assets, introducing a capital return program, or perhaps putting an entire company up for sale.

The beauty of the activist-investor approach is that it usually benefits shareholders. While no activist investor has a perfect track record of success, Icahn has shown that he can help create value in virtually any economic environment. That's been demonstrated by Icahn Enterprises' 66 consecutive quarterly distributions.

The second reason this ultra-high-yield stock can be a foundation for income seekers is the cyclical ties of its core holdings. The company has more than a half-dozen different industries represented by its operating segments. But a large percentage of this representation is tied to the energy and automotive industries. As noted, even though recessions are inevitable, periods of expansion last considerably longer. This suggests the natural expansion of the U.S. and global economy over time will allow the value of Icahn Enterprises' cyclical holdings to increase.

AGNC Investment Corp.: 10.4% yield

The third ultra-high-yield dividend stock that can pad investors' pocketbooks is AGNC Investment Corp. (NASDAQ:AGNC). It has averaged a double-digit yield in 12 of the past 13 years, making it one of the most consistently high-yielding companies of the past decade.

AGNC is another mortgage REIT that investors can trust. It has the same basic operating model as Annaly Capital Management, with a unique aspect or two that income seekers should be aware of.

For instance, AGNC has been parsing out its dividend on a monthly basis since October 2014. Most dividend stocks and mortgage REITs, including Annaly, pay their dividends once a quarter. If you prefer the adrenaline rush of nabbing a payout from your holdings on a monthly basis, buying AGNC is the smart way to go.

Something else to note about AGNC Investment is the company's penchant for buying agency securities. An agency asset is backed by the federal government in the event of default. As of the end of 2021, $79.7 billion of AGNC's $82 billion investment portfolio was agency securities. This is an even higher percentage of agency securities, relative to total portfolio holdings, than Annaly has. Though this added protection does lower the yields AGNC nets from the MBSs it purchases, it also allows the company to deploy leverage to boost its profit potential.

The transparency of the mortgage REIT industry also allows income investors to make smart decisions. The stocks in this industry tend to trade very close to their respective book values. With AGNC's shares changing hands for just 88% of their book value at the time of this writing, it makes for not only an excellent income stock, but a fantastic bounce-back candidate from a share price perspective.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Want $2,000 in Annual Dividend Income? Whether you love chasing after the innovative capacity of growth stocks or prefer the simplicity of value stocks, either strategy can work wonders over the long run.But when it comes to wealth building, few investing strategies have been more consistent than buying dividend stocks.Although it's a report I reference often, J.P. By comparison, the companies not paying a dividend crawled to an annualized return of 1.6% over the same period.Over time, we should expect dividend stocks to outperform. Companies that parse out a dividend on a regular basis are often profitable, time-tested, and have transparent long-term outlooks. These are typically companies that won't keep investors awake at night with worry.Ideally, income seekers want the highest dividend yield possible with the least amount of risk. However, risk and yield tend to correlate once yields hit 4% or above. In other words, high-yielding stocks can be yield traps -- i.e., companies with enticingly high yields where the underlying business model is struggling or broken. The good news is that not all high-yielding stocks are bad news. The stock surged to highs of $372 by October 2021. A rally of more than 800% within 24 months was likely to be followed by a correction. However, the decline has been greater than expected and SE stock currently trades at $155.I believe that the stock is attractive after a big correction, and the worst of the downside is over. Investors can consider fresh exposure to the stock at current levels. It’s worth adding here that Sea Limited continues to deliver robust top-line growth. However, besides the profit booking factor, cash burn is one reason for the sharp decline in the stock. The concern seems to be temporary and provides investors with an entry opportunity.Singapore-based Sea Limited is an internet and mobile platform company, which provides mobile digital content, e-commerce, gaming services and payment platforms.Robust Growth to SustainFor Q3 2021, Sea reported revenue growth of 121.8% on a year-on-year basis to $2.7 billion.Revenue growth for the company has been above 100% on a consistent basis. This explains the multi-fold returns before the current correction. It’s also very likely that robust growth will sustain for Sea in the coming years.A key reason is the company’s strong presence in the Southeast Asian markets. Reports suggest that Southeast Asia added 70 million shoppers since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s also estimated that the number of online shoppers in Southeast Asia will reach 380 million by 2026. Indonesia is likely to be the leading market, followed by Vietnam and Thailand.Clearly, Sea Limited has positive industry tailwinds and this will ensure that healthy growth sustains. An important point to mention here is that as of Q3 2021, the company reported cash and equivalents of $11.12 billion. The company therefore has robust financial flexibility to pursue aggressive expansion and investment in marketing.Cash Burn will Decline with Operating LeverageWhen we look deeper into the company’s results, we can identify two primary segments that are potential cash flow drivers. For Q3 2021, the Digital Entertainment segment reported bookings of $1.2 billion. On a year-on-year basis, bookings were higher by 29.2%. Further, the Digital Entertainment segment reported a positive EBITDA of $715.1 million. Therefore, the segment has a healthy adjusted EBITDA margin. On the other hand, the E-commerce segment revenue growth was 134.4% on a year-on-year basis. The segment, however, reported negative EBITDA of $683.3 million. EBITDA level losses have sustained for the E-commerce segment and that’s one concern among market participants. However, the key point to note is as follows – Amazon (AMZN), Alibaba (BABA) and JD.com (JD) are few examples of e-commerce businesses that are already cash flow machines. There is no reason to believe that Sea Limited can’t replicate a similar business model. With more than 100% revenue growth in the e-commerce segment, the company is positioned to deliver improved EBITDA margin. Once the digital Entertainment and E-commerce segments report positive EBITDA, SE stock will rally. Moreover, the company’s Digital Financial Services growth has also been robust. For Q3 2021, Sea reported $4.6 billion in mobile wallet payment volume. On a year-on-year basis, payment volumes were higher by 111%. With 39.3 million quarterly paying users, the Digital Financial Services segment is another potential game-changer.Sea Limited, therefore, has three business segments that are on a healthy growth trajectory. Geographical expansion for e-commerce is also likely in the next few years. This will ensure that the growth trajectory sustains. The company’s mobile game already has presence in Latin America and India.Wall Street’s TakeTurning to Wall Street, Sea Limited has a Strong Buy consensus rating, based on eight Buys and one Hold ratings assigned in the past three months. The average Sea Limited price target of $322.0 implies 107.8% upside potential.Bottom LineSea Limited has the catalysts of positive industry tailwinds coupled with robust growth. Furthermore, the company has ample cash buffer to navigate the cash burn. With operating leverage in the e-commerce segment, SE likely to be a long-term value creator. The correction in SE stock is therefore a good opportunity to accumulate. In all probability, the downside is capped from current levels and the upside potential is meaningful.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":205,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9053422593,"gmtCreate":1654574790312,"gmtModify":1676535471916,"author":{"id":"3586055114434039","authorId":"3586055114434039","name":"loychng","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/eb649759892edacaa4759c163304f09d","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586055114434039","authorIdStr":"3586055114434039"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice ","listText":"Nice ","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9053422593","repostId":"2241092396","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":156,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9017957558,"gmtCreate":1649739175888,"gmtModify":1676534561616,"author":{"id":"3586055114434039","authorId":"3586055114434039","name":"loychng","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/eb649759892edacaa4759c163304f09d","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586055114434039","authorIdStr":"3586055114434039"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$PING AN(02318)$Patience","listText":"$PING AN(02318)$Patience","text":"$PING AN(02318)$Patience","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/ea7b3ccb9a0a7df70ac388f4816e1633","width":"1125","height":"3615"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9017957558","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":155,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":158194563,"gmtCreate":1625134598652,"gmtModify":1703736833053,"author":{"id":"3586055114434039","authorId":"3586055114434039","name":"loychng","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/eb649759892edacaa4759c163304f09d","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586055114434039","authorIdStr":"3586055114434039"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice","listText":"Nice","text":"Nice","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/158194563","repostId":"1106223449","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1106223449","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1625122086,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1106223449?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-07-01 14:48","market":"us","language":"en","title":"The S&P 500 Notches Its Second-Best First Half Since the Dot-Com Bubble. Don’t be surprised if the stock market keeps on rising.
\n
With June coming to an end, the S&P 500 finished the first half of 2021 with a gain of 14.4%. Since 1998, only 2019’s 17.4% first-half surge has been larger.
\n
The market got a boost from Covid-19 vaccinations, which have helped the U.S. economy reopen, while trillions of dollars of fiscal stimulus have helped shore up demand. The gains continued even as concerns about inflation have increased speculation that the Federal Reserve would be forced to take steps to slow the economy.
\n
The combination of big gains and a more hawkish Fed have raised concerns that the market has become too complacent. If inflation continues to run hot for long enough, the central bank could be forced to act more quickly than the market expects—and cause stocks to tumble. Others worry that U.S. economic growth could slow faster than investors anticipate, causing a pullback in the process.
\n
For those who take that view, there is no better time to back away from the stock market than the present. History suggests otherwise.
\n
Since 1979, the S&P 500 has gained 10% or more 14 times during the first half of the year, and the index has gone on to average a 6.3% gain over the second half of the year. What’s more, the index finished the second half of the year higher In 11 of those instances, or 79% of the time.
\n
Even the losses, when they occurred, weren’t all that bad. The S&P 500 dropped 1.9% in the second half of 1983 and 3.5% during the last six months of 1986.
\n
The one exception was the last six months of 1987 when the index fell 19% during the second half of the year. That period included Black Monday, when the S&P 500 dropped 20% in one day, still a record loss. While selling linked to so-called portfolio insurance was ultimately blamed for the size and speed of the loss, the second half of 1987 was a period of rising bond yields and high stock-market valuations, just like the first half of 2021.
\n
Still, the market has been acting like it wants to go higher, not lower. Pullbacks, a normal event in the midst of bull runs, have been mild in 2021, with the largest drops being less than 4%. “What the [S&P 500] has done throughout 2021 is pick itself up when and where it has needed to, maintaining an uptrend all along,” writes Frank Cappelleri, chief market technician at Instinet.
\n
That 6.3% average second-half rise would push the S&P 500’s full-year gain to around 23%. That would represent a “textbook [market] recovery” from a recession, says Fundstrat’s Tom Lee.
\n
For now, at least, the path of least resistance is higher.
\n

","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
The S&P 500 Notches Its Second-Best First Half Since the Dot-Com Bubble. Don’t be surprised if the stock market keeps on rising.\nWith June coming to an end, the S&P 500 finished the first half of 2021 with a gain of 14.4%. Since 1998, only 2019’s 17.4% first-half surge has been larger.\nThe market got a boost from Covid-19 vaccinations, which have helped the U.S. economy reopen, while trillions of dollars of fiscal stimulus have helped shore up demand. The gains continued even as concerns about inflation have increased speculation that the Federal Reserve would be forced to take steps to slow the economy.\nThe combination of big gains and a more hawkish Fed have raised concerns that the market has become too complacent. If inflation continues to run hot for long enough, the central bank could be forced to act more quickly than the market expects—and cause stocks to tumble. Others worry that U.S. economic growth could slow faster than investors anticipate, causing a pullback in the process.\nFor those who take that view, there is no better time to back away from the stock market than the present. History suggests otherwise.\nSince 1979, the S&P 500 has gained 10% or more 14 times during the first half of the year, and the index has gone on to average a 6.3% gain over the second half of the year. What’s more, the index finished the second half of the year higher In 11 of those instances, or 79% of the time.\nEven the losses, when they occurred, weren’t all that bad. The S&P 500 dropped 1.9% in the second half of 1983 and 3.5% during the last six months of 1986.\nThe one exception was the last six months of 1987 when the index fell 19% during the second half of the year. That period included Black Monday, when the S&P 500 dropped 20% in one day, still a record loss. While selling linked to so-called portfolio insurance was ultimately blamed for the size and speed of the loss, the second half of 1987 was a period of rising bond yields and high stock-market valuations, just like the first half of 2021.\nStill, the market has been acting like it wants to go higher, not lower. Pullbacks, a normal event in the midst of bull runs, have been mild in 2021, with the largest drops being less than 4%. “What the [S&P 500] has done throughout 2021 is pick itself up when and where it has needed to, maintaining an uptrend all along,” writes Frank Cappelleri, chief market technician at Instinet.\nThat 6.3% average second-half rise would push the S&P 500’s full-year gain to around 23%. That would represent a “textbook [market] recovery” from a recession, says Fundstrat’s Tom Lee.\nFor now, at least, the path of least resistance is higher.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":259,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":153555330,"gmtCreate":1625038077820,"gmtModify":1703850656696,"author":{"id":"3586055114434039","authorId":"3586055114434039","name":"loychng","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/eb649759892edacaa4759c163304f09d","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586055114434039","authorIdStr":"3586055114434039"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nice!","listText":"Nice!","text":"Nice!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/153555330","repostId":"1122418477","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1122418477","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1625008161,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1122418477?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-30 07:09","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Tech stocks propel S&P 500, Nasdaq to fresh highs","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1122418477","media":"CNBC","summary":"The S&P 500 notched another record high on Tuesday amid bullish economic data but retreated toward the flat line later in the session as Wall Street continued its recent period of low volatility. The broad market index ticked up less than 0.1% to 4,291.80, good enough for its fourth-straight record close. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished with a gain of about 9 points after being up more than 100 points earlier in the session, closing at 34,292.29. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite added about 0.2% for its own record of 14,528.33.\nHomebuilder stocks moved higher after S&P Case-Shiller saidhome prices rose more than 14% in Aprilcompared to the prior year. Five U.S. cities, including Seattle, saw their largest annual increase on record. Shares of PulteGroup rose 2%.\nSemiconductor stocks gained strength later in the session, with Skyworks and Advanced Micro Devices climbing 4.5% and 2.8%, respectively. General Electric boosted the industrials sector, rising over 1% afterGoldman Sachs named the stock a top idea.\nThe market has churned out a series of record highs in recent weeks, but the gains have been relatively modest and some strategists have pointed to weak market breadth, measured by the performance of the average stock and the number of individual names making new highs, as a potential area of concern.\nOn Tuesday, there were slightly more declining stocks in the S&P 500 than those that rose during the session.\nHowever, the diminished breadth and volatility could simply be a natural pause during the summer months ahead of the busy earnings season in July, said Bill McMahon, the chief investment officer for active equity strategies at Charles Schwab Investment Management.\n\"I think people are in a little bit of a wait-and-see mode, so it's not surprising to see volatility decline and breadth worsen a tad,\" McMahon said, adding that concern about the spreading Delta variant of Covid-19 could also be weighing on stocks.\nShares of Morgan Stanley jumped more than 3% after the bank said it willdouble its quarterly dividend. The bank also announced a $12 billion stock buyback program. The announcement follows last week's stress tests by the Federal Reserve, which all 23 major banks passed. However, some other bank stocks gave up early gains and weighed on the broader indexes despite increasing their own payout plans.\nThe Conference Board's consumer confidence reading for June came in higher than expected, adding to the bullish readings about the economic recovery.\nWith the market entering the final trading days of June and the second quarter, the S&P 500 is on track to register its fifth straight month of gains. The Nasdaq is pacing for its seventh positive month in the last eight. The Dow, however, is in the red for the month, and on track to snap a four-month winning streak.\nSo far in 2021, the S&P 500 has added 14%, while the Nasdaq has added more than 12% with the Dow close behind.\nJPMorgan quantitative strategist Dubravkos Lakos-Bujas said on CNBC's \"Squawk Box\" that the market appeared to have near-term upside.\n\"The growth policy backdrop in our opinion still remains supportive for risk assets in general, certainly including equities. At the same time, the positioning is not really stretched to where we are in a problematic territory. So we do think there is still a runway. ... The summer period, the next two months, is where I think the market continues to break out,\" the strategist said.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":260,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":120432125,"gmtCreate":1624331323467,"gmtModify":1703833715367,"author":{"id":"3586055114434039","authorId":"3586055114434039","name":"loychng","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/eb649759892edacaa4759c163304f09d","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586055114434039","authorIdStr":"3586055114434039"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good update ","listText":"Good update ","text":"Good update","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/120432125","repostId":"1167650307","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":249,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9048911757,"gmtCreate":1656125484279,"gmtModify":1676535772921,"author":{"id":"3586055114434039","authorId":"3586055114434039","name":"loychng","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/eb649759892edacaa4759c163304f09d","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586055114434039","authorIdStr":"3586055114434039"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$NIO Inc.(NIO)$Wow strong recovery! In the past, I have written why BABA stock looks cheap. But I wanted to write about why he might see Alibaba as a worthwhile investment to buy more shares.

Charlie Munger is 98 years old and is the Vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway(NYSE:BRK.A, NYSE:BRK.B). He has worked with Warren Buffett for a long time.

But Munger also runs his own public company, Daily Journal Corporation(NASDAQ:DJCO). Munger has been buying more BABA shares for the securities portfolio of DJCO.

The Stock Has Been Falling

People love it when they can identify a particular stock that either Buffett or Munger seems to focus on, especially when they increase their position. That is what is going on with BABA stock, especially since it has been falling.

For example, in the past three months, Alibaba basically peaked in late Oct. 2020 and has been sliding ever since then. It hit $317.14 per ADR (American Depository Receipt) on Oct. 27, 2020, and also had an interim peak of $217.83 on Feb. 17, 2021.

However, by Jan. 10, 2022, it was down to $127.65. It even had a trough price of $112.09 on Dec. 29, 2021. This means that the stock is now down almost 60% from its peak in Oct. 2020. From its mini-peak of $217.82 in early Feb. 2021, BABA stock is still down just over 41% at $127.65.

But for some reason, this hasn’t deterred Charlie Munger as Chairman of DJCO. His company is still buying more BABA stock.

Munger Loves Alibaba

A recent filing by DJCO showed that it ended 2021 with 602,060 Alibaba ADRs. According toBarron’smagazine, this means it bought a net 300,000 ADRs during Q4 of the Chinese company. It had owned 302,060 Alibaba ADRs at Q3 end. Moreover, according to Barron’s, it had bought 136,740 more ADRs during Q3. So, in effect, DJCO has been averaging down in its cost.

Moreover, Daily Journal didn’t make changes in other investments during Q4. So, it’s clear that Munger et al really like Alibaba stock, even though it has been falling.

What could be the reason for this? Well, as Munger is known as a long-term value buyer, BABA shares trade at a historical low in terms of its valuation metrics.

BABA Stock Is Cheap Historically

For example, right now analysts estimate that the company will earn $8.39 in earnings per share (EPS) in 2022 and $9.51 for 2023. These estimates are from Refinitiv’s analyst surveys, as shown on theYahoo! Financeanalysis page.

S0, at Jan. 10’s price, BABA stock is at 15.2 times 2022 earnings (i.e., $127.65/$8.39) and 13.4 times (i.e., $127.65/9.51). This is a cheap valuation situation on an absolute basis.

But on a historical basis, these metrics are also cheap relative to past P/E ratios. For example, Morningstar shows that the average forward P/E for the past 5 years has been 25.7 times. That is well over the 15x and 13x.

In fact, even if you average the past 4 years, including 2021 when Alibaba was cheap all year, the average forward P/E ratio is 18.6x. This implies that even this year’s 15.2 times metric is too cheap. The potential upside is 22.3% (i.e., 18.6/15.2-1). Compared to 2023 forward earnings, the stock is 38.8% too cheap (i.e., 18.6/13.4 – 1).

What to Do With BABA Stock

The stock is cheap for a reason. There is a lot of fear out there that all Chinese stocks will get delisted. In fact,Barron’ magazine has written that investors should not buy BABA stock.

My attitude about this is very simple. There are always good reasons for a stock to be cheap. If the company is not going out of business, has lots of free cash flow and little debt, which is the case here, there is usually not too much to worry about. Even the delisting issue is not much of an issue, since it would likely trade on a foreign exchange.
