anymore.

Taiwan Semi is the safest bet in the chip industry.

Both stocks could be worth buying now.

Semiconductor companies are cyclical and heavily influenced by macroeconomic factors. Massive research and development costs, upfront expenses to expand manufacturing capacity, and the constant push for innovation make it expensive to stay relevant. But for many companies, the risk is worth the reward because of the rapid growth in chip demand and applications.

Fortune Business Insights estimates that the global semiconductor market will grow at a compound annual rate of 12.2% between 2022 to 2029, more than doubling from $573 billion to nearly 1.4 trillion.

Nvidia and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) are two industry-leading companies at the forefront of the chip industry. But both stocks are down over 40% from their all-time highs due to a downturn in the industry. Here's why each company may be worth a look now.

A bet on the future

Howard Smith (Nvidia): There's no doubt that Nvidia stock was given too much of a premium valuation based on the growth investors expected. That helps explain the more-than-50% drop from its highs in late 2021. That became especially clear when revenue growth in its largest segment sharply reversed course in the current fiscal year.

But the promise and potential that drove Nvidia shares to its unsustainable valuation weren't about the gaming segment, which was thriving at the time. And a transition has already begun that will see the data center, automotive, and artificial intelligence (AI) segments driving the company.

DATA SOURCE: NVIDIA FINANCIAL FILINGS. CHART BY AUTHOR.

While revenue from gaming chips was only half of what it was a year ago, Nvidia's data center business grew 31% year over year in the fiscal 2023 third-quarter period ended Oct. 30, 2022. An investment in Nvidia now is a bet on growing contributions from automotive and AI customers, who have increasing needs in autonomy, robotics, and data analysis.

And though Nvidia's dividend is minuscule compared to that of Taiwan Semi, the company has returned $9.3 billion to shareholders in the form ofshare repurchasesover the first nine months of fiscal 2023. That represented just over half of what has been authorized for buybacks through Dec. 2023.

Nvidia and Taiwan Semi may not deserve the same share of a portfolio. A bet on Nvidia carries added risks that industries like autonomous vehicles and AI will mature and thrive. But for those willing to include a speculative investment with a lot of potential long-term upside, Nvidia's share price correction has now provided an opportunity.

Taiwan Semi is a layup for long-term growth

Daniel Foelber (Taiwan Semiconductor): Few companies hold a candle to Nvidia when it comes to dazzling growth and glamorous products. But what Taiwan Semi lacks in flare it more than makes up for with a lower valuation, a wider moat, and a higher dividend yield.

Taiwan Semi has a dirt-cheap forward price-to-earnings ratio of just 13.4, a dividend yield of 2.3%, and a 47% operating margin -- beating Nvidia in all three categories.

TSM PE RATIO (FORWARD) DATA BY YCHARTS

Nvidia is one of the most innovative companies in the semiconductor industry. But it's a far riskier business model than Taiwan Semi.

Taiwan Semi is the world's largest pure-play chip foundry. You may be surprised to learn that a fabless chip maker like Nvidia doesn't actually make its own chips, much like Apple isn't actually making its iPhones. It relies on suppliers for that step.

Nvidia -- like basically every major player in the game -- relies on Taiwan Semi to make a sizable chunk of its products. So Taiwan Semi isn't really a competitor with Nvidia. In fact, Nivida is one of its main customers.

Instead, Taiwan Semi is competing with other chip foundries. The name of the game is providing services for the changing needs of customers at a low cost and a fast turnaround. Taiwan Semi isn't immune to competition. But no company comes close to its size and efficiency.

In this vein, Taiwan Semi is a far safer bet on the growth of the industry than any other chip maker. With Taiwan Semi, you're investing in the growth of chip production and usage, whereas with Nvidia, you're investing in a company that you think will spearhead technological breakthroughs.

For comparison, investing in a stock like Home Depot is a way to indirectly bet on the housing market instead of investing directly in a home builder. Or investing in Caterpillar is a good way to bet on construction, oil and gas, or mining instead of directly buying an exploration and production oil and gas stock.

Nvidia stock could outperform Taiwan Semi if it continues to out-innovate its competitors. But that is a relatively riskier proposition than just going with Taiwan Semi, which has a far better risk/reward profile than Nvidia.

Two good options worth considering now

Nvidia and Taiwan Semi operate on different sides of the semiconductor industry. Nvidia has done a masterful job of diversifying its business to include gaming, datacenter, AI, and autonomous vehicles. But for now, the AI and autonomous vehicle side of its business remains a sideshow, while data center and gaming performance are highly cyclical. That being said, Nvidia is positioned to outlast downturns while still being able to invest in multi-decade trends.

Meanwhile, Taiwan Semi is poised to continue outspending its competitors to retain its industry-leading manufacturing profile. Massive research and development costs, upfront expenses to expand manufacturing capacity, and the constant push for innovation make it expensive to stay relevant. But for many companies, the risk is worth the reward because of the rapid growth in chip demand and applications.Fortune Business Insights estimates that the global semiconductor market will grow at a compound annual rate of 12.2% between 2022 to 2029, more than doubling from $573 billion to nearly 1.4 trillion.Nvidia and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) are two industry-leading companies at the forefront of the chip industry. But both stocks are down over 40% from their all-time highs due to a downturn in the industry. Here's why each company may be worth a look now.IMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.A bet on the futureHoward Smith (Nvidia): There's no doubt that Nvidia stock was given too much of a premium valuation based on the growth investors expected. And a transition has already begun that will see the data center, automotive, and artificial intelligence (AI) segments driving the company.DATA SOURCE: NVIDIA FINANCIAL FILINGS. CHART BY AUTHOR.While revenue from gaming chips was only half of what it was a year ago, Nvidia's data center business grew 31% year over year in the fiscal 2023 third-quarter period ended Oct. 2023.Nvidia and Taiwan Semi may not deserve the same share of a portfolio. A bet on Nvidia carries added risks that industries like autonomous vehicles and AI will mature and thrive. But for those willing to include a speculative investment with a lot of potential long-term upside, Nvidia's share price correction has now provided an opportunity.Taiwan Semi is a layup for long-term growthDaniel Foelber (Taiwan Semiconductor): Few companies hold a candle to Nvidia when it comes to dazzling growth and glamorous products. But what Taiwan Semi lacks in flare it more than makes up for with a lower valuation, a wider moat, and a higher dividend yield.Taiwan Semi has a dirt-cheap forward price-to-earnings ratio of just 13.4, a dividend yield of 2.3%, and a 47% operating margin -- beating Nvidia in all three categories.TSM PE RATIO (FORWARD) DATA BY YCHARTSNvidia is one of the most innovative companies in the semiconductor industry. But it's a far riskier business model than Taiwan Semi.Taiwan Semi is the world's largest pure-play chip foundry. You may be surprised to learn that a fabless chip maker like Nvidia doesn't actually make its own chips, much like Apple isn't actually making its iPhones. It relies on suppliers for that step.Nvidia -- like basically every major player in the game -- relies on Taiwan Semi to make a sizable chunk of its products. So Taiwan Semi isn't really a competitor with Nvidia. In fact, Nivida is one of its main customers.Instead, Taiwan Semi is competing with other chip foundries. Or investing in Caterpillar is a good way to bet on construction, oil and gas, or mining instead of directly buying an exploration and production oil and gas stock.Nvidia stock could outperform Taiwan Semi if it continues to out-innovate its competitors. But that is a relatively riskier proposition than just going with Taiwan Semi, which has a far better risk/reward profile than Nvidia. Two good options worth considering nowNvidia and Taiwan Semi operate on different sides of the semiconductor industry. Nvidia has done a masterful job of diversifying its business to include gaming, datacenter, AI, and autonomous vehicles. But for now, the AI and autonomous vehicle side of its business remains a sideshow, while data center and gaming performance are highly cyclical. That being said, Nvidia is positioned to outlast downturns while still being able to invest in multi-decade trends.Meanwhile, Taiwan Semi is poised to continue outspending its competitors to retain its industry-leading manufacturing profile. As the industry evolves and becomes more complex, Taiwan Semi has the margins and cash flow necessary to make necessary improvements.Aside from being different companies, both stocks have contrasting investment theses. Nvidia offers arguably more upside with its potential to be a leader in industries that could unlock untold value. But it's also a more expensive stock that lacks a meaningful dividend yield. By contrast, Taiwan Semi should enjoy steady growth in lockstep with the overall industry.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":216,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":182565118697576,"gmtCreate":1685580640321,"gmtModify":1685580644752,"author":{"id":"4127625745778862","authorId":"4127625745778862","name":"mavis88","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/02b482b2c40d0e87999261caefcc5e95","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4127625745778862","idStr":"4127625745778862"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Thanks for sharing","listText":"Thanks for sharing","text":"Thanks for sharing","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/182565118697576","repostId":"1156103520","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1156103520","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1685579099,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1156103520?lang=&edition=full_marsco","pubTime":"2023-06-01 08:24","language":"en","title":"ASX Flat; Paladin Energy Bounces Back","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1156103520","media":"The Australian Financial Review","summary":"The Australian sharemarket slipped 0.1 per cent, or by 7.3 points to 7089.1 at market open from the ","content":"

The Australian sharemarket slipped 0.1 per cent, or by 7.3 points to 7089.1 at market open from the prospects of higher local interest rates and weak overseas sentiment.

The financials sector was among the worst performing sectors, down 0.2 per cent. The biggest boost had come from iPhone maker Apple Inc after Goldman Sachs initiated coverage with a "buy" rating.

But equities gave up earlier gains as yields on U.S. 10-year Treasury notes and the 2-year Treasuries yield came back from early declines after data showed new orders for U.S.-manufactured goods fell less than expected in January.

Rising bond yields tend to weigh on equity valuations, particularly those of growth and technology stocks, as higher rates reduce the value of future cash flows.

"The market is in a holding pattern because this week will be key to shedding light on what's going on with the U.S. economy," said Irene Tunkel, chief U.S. equity strategist for BCA Research in New York, who plans to keep a close watch on February's U.S. non-farm payrolls report, due out Friday.

"People are worried about the jobs number and the economic data because they're worried about what the Fed will do. Ultimately all roads lead to the Fed."

And with potential Fed rate hikes their key concern, Monday's data had already dampened investor enthusiasm, said Shawn Cruz, head trading strategist at TD Ameritrade in Chicago.

"The market pullback was because there is still a lot of work to do on inflation," said Cruz. "We're not seeing the type of demand slowdown we need to see. The whole point of the Fed hiking rates is to slow down the economy."

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 40.47 points, or 0.12%, to 33,431.44; the S&P 500 gained 2.78 points, or 0.07%, at 4,048.42; and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 13.27 points, or 0.11%, to 11,675.74.

Among the S&P's 11 major industry sectors, six ended the day higher. The commodity-linked materials sector was the biggest decliner, falling 1.7%, after China set a lower-than-expected target for economic growth this year at around 5%.

The technology sector was the top gainer, with the biggest lift from Apple, which closed up 1.9%. The U.S. economy added 517,000 jobs in January, according to the Labor Department, far outstripping expectations and setting in motion a market rethink on just how high the Federal Reserve will take interest rates in its effort to bring down inflation.

Since then, weekly jobless benefit claims have continued to show few Americans filing for unemployment benefits, fueling expectations that another blockbuster gain in jobs could be due in the data for February next Friday, which in turn could force the Federal Reserve to resort to even more aggressive interest rate hikes, according to Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, during a phone call with MarketWatch.

"Will it turn out that the number we got last month was a fluke? Or is this part of a new trend?," Sosnick said.

What will Powell say?

Investors haven't heard from Powell since he participated in a Q&A at the Economic Club of Washington on Feb. 7.

During his back-and-forth with private-equity billionaire David Rubenstein, Powell reiterated that signs of disinflation are emerging, although he acknowledged the journey back to the Fed's 2% target would likely be "bumpy."

Since then, a run of hotter-than-expected inflation reports showed that a streak of waning price pressures might be coming to an end.

The cost of living rose 0.5% in January, the biggest increase in three months, according to the consumer-price index released Feb. 14. The annual rate of inflation, meanwhile, slowed again to 6.4% from 6.5%, but economists had expected an even larger decline. The January producer-price index and the core personal consumption expenditure index, the Fed's favored inflation measure, also came in hotter than expected.

As a result, investors will be listening closely to Powell to see what the Fed chair has to say about the central bank's efforts to crush inflation when he heads to Capitol Hill on Tuesday for testimony before the Senate Banking Committee, followed by testimony before the House Financial Services Committee a day later.

"If the Fed truly is data dependent, the latest inflation data hasn't been at all what the Fed wants to see. So how will Powell dance around that?" Sosnick told MarketWatch, in a phone interview.

How will stocks respond to higher yields?

On top of the economic data and commentary from Powell, investors will also be watching to see how higher bond yields will impact equities.

The fact that investors can now earn a yield north of 5% by simply buying six-month Treasury bills means stocks are now facing major competition from a far less risky asset class, according to Callie Cox, U.S. investment analyst at eToro.

What's more, many on Wall Street expect bond yields to continue to climb, potentially adding to the pressure facing U.S. equity benchmarks like the S&P 500 index , Nasdaq Composite and Dow Jones Industrial Average .

"We expect the adjustment in rates is not over," according to a team of economists at Mizuho Securities.

Uncertainty abounds

Investors started the year with expectations that the Fed could cut interest rates as soon as this fall. However, hotter-than-expected economic data and warnings about more rate hikes from Fed officials have since tempered that view.

To wit, moves in Fed funds futures suggest investors see a much lower likelihood of rate cuts later this year, according to the CME's FedWatch tool. while the fed-funds rate is seen peaking well above 5%.

It remains to be seen exactly how far the Fed will hike interest rates. Some are betting that the central bank could eventually raise its policy rate as high as 6%, or perhaps even higher, according to Mohannad Aama, a portfolio manager at Beam Capital.

"There's still so much uncertainty," Aama said.

Because of this, every data point could potentially influence investors' expectations about how far rates will rise, potentially delivering a hit, or boost, to stocks, he said.

U.S. stocks suffered in February, with major indexes losing ground and denting an early 2023 rally. However, stocks bounced last week, however, with the Dow snapping a run of four straight weekly losses and the S&P 500 breaking a three-week streak.

The Dow rose 1.8% last week, while the S&P 500 advanced 1.9% and the Nasdaq Composite added 2%.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Stock Market Faces Crucial Test This Week: 3 Questions That Could Decide Rally’s Fate
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nStock Market Faces Crucial Test This Week: 3 Questions That Could Decide Rally’s Fate\n
\n\n
\n\n\n<div class=\"head\" \">\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Dow Jones
\n
2023-03-06 06:45
\n
\n\n
\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n

Jobs data, remarks by Fed's Powell and rising Treasury yields set the stage

Jerome Powell testifies and U.S. February jobs data loom as investors wrestle with rising interest rate expectations in the week ahead.

There will be no rest for investors this coming week as they await a marquee report on the state of the U.S. labor market, along with biannual Congressional testimony from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.

Further complicating things, investors will also be watching to see how stocks react to more attractive risk-free returns in the bond market after the yield on the 10-year Treasury note last week temporarily topped the 4% threshold, with many expecting it to climb even further.

Was January's jobs number a 'fluke'?

On the economic data front, the most important question that investors will be looking to answer is whether January's huge job gains continued in February. The U.S. economy added 517,000 jobs in January, according to the Labor Department, far outstripping expectations and setting in motion a market rethink on just how high the Federal Reserve will take interest rates in its effort to bring down inflation.Since then, weekly jobless benefit claims have continued to show few Americans filing for unemployment benefits, fueling expectations that another blockbuster gain in jobs could be due in the data for February next Friday, which in turn could force the Federal Reserve to resort to even more aggressive interest rate hikes, according to Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, during a phone call with MarketWatch.\"Will it turn out that the number we got last month was a fluke? Or is this part of a new trend?,\" Sosnick said. What will Powell say?Investors haven't heard from Powell since he participated in a Q&A at the Economic Club of Washington on Feb. 7.During his back-and-forth with private-equity billionaire David Rubenstein, Powell reiterated that signs of disinflation are emerging, although he acknowledged the journey back to the Fed's 2% target would likely be \"bumpy.\"Since then, a run of hotter-than-expected inflation reports showed that a streak of waning price pressures might be coming to an end.The cost of living rose 0.5% in January, the biggest increase in three months, according to the consumer-price index released Feb. 14. The annual rate of inflation, meanwhile, slowed again to 6.4% from 6.5%, but economists had expected an even larger decline. The January producer-price index and the core personal consumption expenditure index, the Fed's favored inflation measure, also came in hotter than expected. As a result, investors will be listening closely to Powell to see what the Fed chair has to say about the central bank's efforts to crush inflation when he heads to Capitol Hill on Tuesday for testimony before the Senate Banking Committee, followed by testimony before the House Financial Services Committee a day later.\"If the Fed truly is data dependent, the latest inflation data hasn't been at all what the Fed wants to see. S$0.0339.

The higher revenue and NPI were driven by contributions from new leases within the Singapore portfolio, but DPU fell because of higher operating and borrowing costs.

MIT’s trailing 12-month DPU came in at S$0.1373, giving its units a trailing distribution yield of 6%.

The industrial REIT maintained a gearing of 37.2% with close to three-quarters of its loans on portfolio comprising Jem and 313 Somerset in Singapore and Sky Complex in Milan, Italy.

These properties had a value of S$3.6 billion as of 30 June 2022.

LREIT reported a 159.6% year on year jump in gross revenue to S$101.7 million for 1H FY2023 with the addition of Jem into its portfolio.

NPI shot up 157.8% year on year to S$76.4 million.

DPU increased by 2.1% year on year to S$0.0245, with annualised DPU coming in at S$0.049.

LREIT’s units provide a forward distribution yield of 7.4%.

The REIT’s gearing ratio stood at 39.2% with a low weighted average S$450.2 million.

Adjusted NPI fell by 3.7% year on year to S$342.1 million while DPU slid by 0.8% year on year to S$0.0762.

Units of FLCT provide a trailing distribution yield of 6.3%.

FLCT reported a strong set of operating metrics for its fiscal 2023’s first quarter (1Q FY2023).

Rental reversion hit positive 11% while the occupancy rate and WALE stood healthy at 95.9% and 4.6 years, respectively.

Aggregate leverage stood at just 27.9% as of 31 December 2022 with a low cost of borrowings of 1.7%.

78.7% of the REIT’s borrowings were on fixed
