U.S. stock futures edged down ahead of an update on the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits and another set of corporate earnings reports.
Futures on the S&P 500 declined 0.52% and Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipped 0.14%. Changes in futures don't necessarily predict movements after the opening bell.
In Europe, the Stoxx Europe 600 fell 0.63% in morning trade. The financials and materials sectors posted the main losses while the energy sector rose.
The U.K.'s FTSE 100 shed 0.02%. Other stock indexes in Europe were mixed as France's CAC 40 rose 0.07%, whereas the U.K.'s FTSE 250 was down 0.15% and Germany's DAX lost 0.63%.
In commodities, Brent crude strengthened 1.13% to $93.45 a barrel, Light Crude Oil rose 1.44% to $85.74%. Gold rose 0.11% to $1,636 a troy ounce.
Both VIX and VIXmain rose over 1%。
Stocks in Asia mostly fell as Hong Kong's Hang Seng was lower 1.7%, Japan's Nikkei 225 index declined 0.9% and China's benchmark Shanghai Composite was lower 0.3%.
