The S&P/ASX 200 jumped 1.1 percent, or 73.4 points, to 6793.3 in the opening minutes of trade, buoyed by strong gains posted across the resources sector.
Lithium stocks extended their rally after carbonate prices hit a fresh record of 500,500 yuan ($US71,315) a tonne in China; Lake Resources added 3.8 percent to $1.08, Pilbara Minerals rose 3.9 percent to $4.93, Core Lithium firmed 3.1 percent to $1.48, Allkem climbed 2.9 percent to $15.78.
New Hope rallied 7.5 percent to $5.87 after reporting a surge in profits for the 12 months ended July 31 on the back of soaring coal prices.
IDP Education rose 2.4 percent to $28.29 after announcing it has entered into a binding agreement to acquire student placement agency Intake Education.
Fortescue Metals Group jumped 1.3 percent to $17.67 after announcing it will spend $US6.2 billion ($9.2 billion) on renewable energy projects to save more than $1 billion in costs a year and hit its 2030 net zero emissions target.
