Fed's Powell: 'Very important' for Congress to lift debt ceiling
Reuters2021-09-23
Sept 22 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Wednesday said it is “very important” for Congress to raise the federal debt ceiling in a timely fashion, and no one should assume that the central bank can fully protect the economy or financial markets in the event of a U.S. debt default.
Powell, at a news conference following the Fed’s latest policy meeting, declined to say whether he has been liaising with the Treasury Department or lawmakers over the matter.
