CoreWeave Surges Nearly 18% on Blockbuster Earnings as CEO Declares a Pivotal Inflection Point

Deep News08-12

Shares of CoreWeave, Inc. (CRWV) skyrocketed by nearly 18% in pre-market trading, reaching $106.43 by mid-morning, after the AI cloud services provider reported a stellar second-quarter earnings beat. The stock surged as much as 20% initially, driven by results that significantly exceeded analyst expectations.

The company posted quarterly revenue of $2.5 billion, doubling year-over-year and in line with market forecasts. Its loss per share came in at $1.14, narrower than the analyst consensus of a $1.41 loss per share. Adjusted operating profit hit $128 million, far surpassing the expected $66 million. CEO Michael Intrator stated, "This quarter marked a major inflection point for CoreWeave, with scale effects beginning to translate into expanding operating leverage. Customer demand is accelerating, enterprise adoption is broadening, and our technology platform is deepening."

The recovery from a sharp correction

Since its last earnings report in May, CoreWeave shares had fallen over 30% amid market concerns about revenue growth and capital expenditure plans. The strong performance acted as a direct catalyst for the sharp rebound. The company's backlog now stands at $104 billion, meeting expectations, with an additional $25 billion in committed orders added in the third quarter, not yet reflected in that figure.

Business backdrop and competitive pressures

CoreWeave is investing billions of dollars in building data centers to lease AI chip computing power to companies like Meta and Anthropic. Global demand for AI computing remains robust, with chip and memory supply constraints allowing clients to pay a premium. However, competition is intensifying. SpaceX has begun leasing out computing power from its own data centers to clients including Anthropic and Google, while Meta is also exploring the possibility. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has repeatedly hinted that leasing out some computing capacity could be a reasonable move for Meta, potentially pressuring CoreWeave's long-term growth prospects.

Overall, CoreWeave has temporarily alleviated market concerns about its cash burn rate, thanks to its revenue doubling, narrowing losses, and better-than-expected operating leverage improvement, fueling a strong stock rally.
