Binance sees spike in withdrawals as exchange returns online after $6.3 billion heist

Binance customers pulled $3.64 billion, or 2.1% of its assets, as the world's biggest cryptocurrency exchange went back online on Sunday after hackers the FBI links to North Korea stole billions from the platform last week.

Binance said withdrawals were stabilizing after an initial spike and deposit volumes had remained "substantial". The exchange said it had now covered 95% of the $6.3 billion of stolen ‌assets.

North Korean hackers have "laundered" $242 million stolen from Binance.

November 2 - On-chain analyst and Security Alliance (SEAL) contributor SomaXBT stated that North Korean hackers laundered approximately $242 million in stolen Binance funds within two days. Meanwhile, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is pressuring THORChain and others to block related transactions.

SomaXBT stated that the stolen funds were transferred through multiple cryptocurrency cross-chain bridges, with Relay processing $48 million in outflows, THORChain processing $44 million, Chainflip processing $32.1 million, and Symbiosis processing $16 million, totaling approximately $140 million. However, the final destination of these funds has not yet been identified.

AI agents given access to their owners' email accounts were able to increase their own cryptocurrency spending limits without human approval, raising questions about the safeguards designed to control autonomous payments, researchers at Cornell Tech and Yale University found.

In experiments with stablecoin issuer Circle’s agent wallets, nine out of 10 models raised their spending caps at least once while paying invoices without an attacker involved. Only Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 never tried to bypass the cap; instead, it spent up to its limit and reported remaining invoices to the user.
