It appears that investors are starting to lose patience and Tesla is going to have to focus to get those two.\"\nOn Wednesday, Tesla announced worst-than-expected Q4 earnings. Revenue for the EV maker slightly increased to $25.17 billion — up just 2% year over year. Automotive revenue fell to $19.8 billion from $21.56 billion in the year ago quarter. \nIts operating income dropped 23% to $1.58 billion. Tesla said the decrease was mainly due to increased expenses with artificial intelligence and other R&D projects as well as lower vehicles prices. \nYet Musk boasted about an “epic 2026 and a ridiculously good ’27 and ’28.” Musk said he's confident FSD-enabled EVs will be available in California later this year, plus \"many other regions,\" after the Austin launch.  \nThe billionaire unveiled Cybercabs at a glitzy event in October. Test cars drove investors, executives, and analysts around a Warner Bros. studio lot in Burbank. The car showcased no steering wheel, no pedals, and no human in the front seat. \nMusk said Tesla currently has hundreds of Tesla cars operating autonomously at its Fremont factory. He plans for FSD-enabled Teslas to launch as a paid ride share service. The Cybercabs themselves are not projected to arrive in 2025. \n\nIn its earnings report, Tesla revealed that FSD, which is currently only allowed to be used to assist driving, contributed $596 million in revenue in 2024. Tesla is behind Google (GOOGL, GOOG), who was first to market with Waymo (they're operating as robotaxis in multiple cities). \n\"After years of false promises you just get to a point where its like 'show me the money,'\" Tesla investor Ross Gerber, who co-founded investment firm Gerber Kawasaki, told Yahoo Finance. \"I'm just not convinced. He doesn't want people focusing on the short term and what's happening today because it's not good.\"\nGerber says he thinks by 2026 there will be Tesla Cybercabs with LiDAR (light detection and ranging) — a technology that Musk has dismissed but others use. Instead, Tesla rely on artificial intelligence and cameras to guide the cars.\nToday's regulation around autonomous vehicles vary state-by-state. Roughly half of U.S. states have their own set of statutes for autonomous transportation. Legal experts tell Yahoo Finance that Musk will have to navigate a regulatory maze to deliver on his FSD promise.\n\"The thrust of the claims in this space have been one that outpaces the reality of their introduction,\" Cary Coglianese, a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania, said. \"So we've had a lot more hype over self-driving vehicles and how they'd be introduced then we have seen actually rollout.\"\nCoglianese says it's a more complex puzzle than some in the industry have led on — not only technically, but socially and psychologically.\n\"It's also true that so far we've seen the rollout of Waymo in low speed settings more so than highways,\" Coglianese said. \"Quite frankly regulators and society will have to grapple with that — is the technical performance where we want it to be and is the public accepting of this form of transportation?\"\n\nAccording to data from the city of Austin, Waymo has already deployed there. Amazon's (AMZN) Zoox, Volkswagen (VWAGY), and startup AVRide are currently testing in the city. And Hyundai (HYMTF) is in the mapping phase.\n\"Musk wants to demonstrate to investors that this is monetizable,\" Albany Law School professor, Ted De Barbieri, said. \"I imagine that selling it as a paid service rather than just an add-on to people who are buying Teslas might be able to demonstrate to the market that the value of the technology is a certain amount — which could be useful in bumping up the share price.\"\nAlso playing out is Musk's public bromance with President Donald Trump. The billionaire used his massive wealth to help Trump return to the White House, and has been appointed to head the newly created DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency). \nMany wonder if Trump will carry out a deregulation agenda. In November reports suggested that Trump was looking to ease regulation and create a federal framework for self-driving. \n\"It's certainly possible in the first 100 days of this new administration that we could see the White House pushing congress to adopting federal safety legislation,\" De Barbieri said. \"Whether this administration will put its political capital behind behind that legislation is unclear.\"\nWilliam Blair analyst Jed Dorsheimer wrote on Thursday that he has \"learned to tack 6 to 12 months on Musk's full self-driving (FSD) optimism.\"\nMorgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas wrote in a note following earnings that while 80% of Tesla's revenue is from automotive — there was almost no discussion of that business on the call. \n\"Tesla's 4Q results are emblematic of a company in the transition from an automotive 'pure play' to a highly diversified play on AI and robotics,\" Jonas said. \"While the journey may be volatile and nonlinear, we believe 2025 will be a year where investors will continue to appreciate and value these existing and nascent industries of embodied AI where we believe Tesla has established a material competitive advantage.\"\nYasmin Khorram is a senior reporter at Yahoo Finance.
