Retail Sales Jumped 1.4% in March -- WSJ

Dow Jones04-16

By Harriet Torry

A surge in vehicle purchases helped propel consumer spending in March, as buyers rushed to auto dealerships to get ahead of import tariffs.

-- Retail sales rose 1.4% last month from February, the Commerce Department said Wednesday.

-- The figure, which measures spending at stores, online and in restaurants, is seasonally adjusted.

-- Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had expected a 1.2% rise.

-- Excluding motor vehicles, spending rose by a more modest 0.5%, also beating consensus expectations.

The data predates President Trump's "Liberation Day" announcement of sweeping new tariffs on April 2. However, some earlier tariffs took effect in March, including some levies on goods from Mexico, Canada and China.
