President Trump said Thursday evening that he extended a pause on U.S. military strikes on Iran energy sites for 10 days at the request of Iranians who wanted the additional time to allow peace negotiations to move forward.
Trump said that the Iranians initially asked for a seven-day extension. Trump tied his decision to offer an additional three days to a gesture made by the Iranian leaders: They had initially offered to allow eight oil Pakistani-flagged tankers to sail through the Strait of Hormuz but ultimately allowed passage for ten.
"The Iranians asked me to do that," Trump said in an interview with Fox News' "The Five." "I don't know that they get there. Maybe they do, maybe they won't." He added: "In a certain sense, we've already won."
