President Donald Trump on August 11 criticized New York City's Pied-a-Terre Tax, claiming it is costing the city and state a fortune while driving tens of thousands of residents to flee to other states.
"The NYC Pied-a-Terre Tax is costing New York City and State a fortune in that the money, eventually to be gotten, is very little compared to to the TAXES PAID by the tens of thousands of people who are fleeing the City, never to return," Trump wrote on X. He added that Florida, Texas, and other states are benefiting from the exodus.
Trump described the tax as a "dangerous political 'experiment'" that will destroy New York, calling it "pure Amateur Hour." He said as President of the United States, he finds it hard to watch the destruction of a place he once loved. "Financial, and then Social, RUIN, is a 100% certainty," he warned. He also noted that congestion pricing is being imposed on top of everything else. Trump stated he is looking into whether the federal government has any legal right to "avert this disaster" for the millions who cherish New York.
