President Donald Trump on August 19 celebrated the primary election defeat of Alexander Vindman, a former National Security Council official, calling it "the most gratifying loss" and labeling Vindman a "real treasonous creep." In a post on X, Trump claimed Vindman lied about his phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, asserting that the conversation was recorded and proved his innocence. Trump also said Vindman lost to a "Radical Left Lunatic" who will be defeated by Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, whom he praised as a "truly Fantastic Senator."
Trump reiterated his defense of the July 2019 call, which led to his first impeachment, and stated that Vindman "should be prosecuted for what he did." The former National Security Council official, who testified during the impeachment inquiry, lost a primary election for a Virginia House seat on August 18. Trump did not name the winning candidate but described the race as a contest between a "treasonous creep" and a "Radical Left Lunatic."
