European Stocks Close Mostly Lower as Trump Ends Iran Talks

European stock markets closed mostly lower Tuesday after President Donald Trump said he is ending talks with Iran, leaving the five-month conflict with no end in sight.

The Stoxx Europe 600 declined 0.7%, Germany's DAX 40 and France's CAC 40 each fell 0.8%, while the Swiss Market Index and the FTSE 100 each edged up 0.1%.

In corporate news, Banco Santander and Centerbridge Partners received European Commission approval to acquire joint control of UK-based Ebury Partners.

Shares of the Spanish bank dropped 1.9% in Madrid.

UBS Group is working with Ardian as the private equity firm weighs a potential sale of Swissbit, a provider of industrial data-storage and security products, Bloomberg reported.

Shares of the Swiss bank fell 1% in Zurich.

BHP Group reported fiscal year 2026 underlying earnings of $2.60 per basic share, up from $2 a year earlier. Revenue rose to $58.76 billion from $51.26 billion a year earlier.

BHP failed to strike a wage deal for workers at its Port Hedland operations in Western Australia, Reuters reported, citing the Combined BHP Ports Unions.

Shares of the mining company gained 0.7% in London.

Diageo agreed to change the formulations of several whisky and rum brands in India to resolve issues flagged by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India over added flavorings, Reuters reported.

Shares of Diageo lost 1.1% in London.

Smith & Nephew and Imperial College London launched a five-year partnership to research and innovate on robotic surgery for musculoskeletal conditions.

Shares of the medical-device maker rose 2.1% in London.
