Singapore Shares Open Lower, Weighed Down by Geopolitical Uncertainties

MT Newswires08-17

Singapore shares opened the week in the red, as renewed Israeli attacks on Lebanon and the possibility of fresh U.S. sanctions on Iran dampened investor sentiment.

The Straits Times Index opened lower by 0.86%, or by 49.41 points, at 5,694.18.

Over the weekend, Israel is reported to have carried out one of the deadliest days of attacks since a peace agreement was announced in June. Investors are also keenly watching the developments around the memorandum of understanding aimed at ending fighting between the U.S. and Iran, which is set to expire today.
