U.S. Stock Futures Weaker as Jobs Report Supports Rate Hike Bets

Dow Jones09-04 21:10

0910 ET - U.S. stock futures are lower after a stronger-than-expected August jobs reading raises expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise rates later this month. August payrolls grew by 162,000 versus the WSJ consensus of 53,000, while July's previously reported job decline of 23,000 was revised to show a gain 21,000. "Even the most committed dove would struggle to find anything in the August employment report to justify keeping interest rates unchanged, with the surge in payrolls driven by strength across the non-health private sectors and the unemployment rate unchanged despite a big rebound in participation," Capital Economics' Stephen Brown says in a note. S&P futures are down17.5 points.
