Mastercard's (MA) clean Q3 beat and volume growth, supported by pricing and mix, reflects the company's ability to compound through a mixed spending backdrop, BofA Securities said in a Friday research report.
Better US trends stemmed from lapping the Capital One (COF) debit migration, commercial wins, and higher gasoline spending, but cooler cross-border activity was attributed to new EU customs fees, retail promotional timing, and lower crypto purchases, analysts wrote.
Mastercard reported Q3 adjusted earnings Thursday of $5.31 per diluted share, up from $4.38 a year earlier. Analysts polled by FactSet expected $5.17. Revenue for the quarter ended Sept. 30 was $9.81 billion, up from $8.60 billion a year earlier. Analysts expected $9.66 billion.
Higher incentives and litigation payments, as well as customer settlement timing, weighed on cash conversion, according to the note.
The company expects agentic commerce to create opportunities in consumer transactions, business-to-business payments, and microtransactions, according to BofA.
The brokerage said it reiterated its buy rating on the stock and raised its price target to $775 per share from $735.
