Investors have become more risk-averse and less willing to back companies with forward-looking valuations. And the combination of high inflation, rising interest rates, and weakness on some economic fronts has created business-level challenges for many fintech players.But there's a silver lining. For long-term investors, stark bearish trends have actually created opportunities to buy some stocks with incredible rebound potential at fantastic prices. With that in mind, here are two beaten-down fintech stocks that Motley Fool contributors have identified as top recovery plays.PayPal is a bargain after its fall from graceParkev Tatevosian: PayPal's stock is down 75.8% off its highs of the last few years. The fintech stock thrived during the earlier stages of the pandemic as folks were spending more time and money online.Why was that good for PayPal? The company makes it more convenient for people to shop online: It lets you store your payment information and then use your PayPal login and password or Face ID to shop at various online sites. That removes a pain point for some people, including me, who prefer not to enter their payment information on each new website.To understand the magnitude of consumer appreciation, you can look at PayPal's revenue growth. Between 2017 and 2022, PayPal's sales jumped from $13 billion to $27.5 billion. More impressively, that boosted PayPal's operating income from $2.26 billion to $4 billion over that same period.The most challenging part of PayPal is arguably in the past. Building a network of merchants willing to accept PayPal as a payment method is costly and time-consuming. However, now that the significant part of that expansion is behind it, investors are starting to see profitability expanding.While it might take a considerable time for Paypal's stock price to reach and eclipse its previous high, the company offers investors an excellent risk-return trade-off at its current price. Indeed, at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 15.29, PayPal's stock is a bargain.StoneCo has incredible rebound potentialKeith Noonan: StoneCo (STNE) is one of Brazil's leading payment processors for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). The company has continued to onboard new merchant partners, increase total payment volume conducted through its platform, and grow revenue at encouraging rates. But there's a big catch that has resulted in its valuation being crushed: The fintech also started offering loans for SMBs, and results on that front have been disastrous.Not only were some economic headwinds impacting the Brazilian market, but StoneCo was also relying on the country's national registry system to determine whether applicants were creditworthy. Unfortunately, Brazil's national registry proved to have major flaws, and the company wound up relying on underwriting standards that led to lots of bad debt in its loan portfolio. Most of those loans have now been discharged or sold off to third parties at basement-level prices, but the company still has roughly $91.5 million in bad loans on its books.Amid these challenges and the broader valuation pullback for growth stocks, StoneCo stock trades down roughly 90% from its high.The remaining bad loans will likely have to be written off and, admittedly, put a dent in StoneCo's near-term financial outlook, but the situation should also be viewed in context. With a market cap of roughly $2.9 billion, losing that money isn't going to break the company, and the business generated roughly $31.4 million in non-GAAP (adjusted) net income in its last reported quarter.Crucially, the company's payment-processing business continues to look quite strong. StoneCo managed to add 248,000 net new merchant partners in the third quarter, overall revenue rose 71% year over year, and adjusted net income was up 90.5% from the previous year's quarter.STNE PE Ratio (Forward) data by YCharts.With the business still growing rapidly and an end to financial challenges posed by the credit business now in sight, StoneCo looks attractively valued, trading at roughly 15.7 times this year's expected earnings and 1.3 times expected sales. Potential turbulence for the Brazilian economy in the near term means there are still risk factors on the table, but StoneCo's core business looks fairly solid, and the stock is priced at levels that leave room for explosive upside.These stocks could surge as pressures on fintechs easeFintech companies have faced a barrage of unfavorable macroeconomic conditions recently, but the stage is set for many companies in the space to see valuation recovery as these pressures begin to dissipate. With their beaten-down valuations and encouraging prospects for long-term growth, PayPal and StoneCo look like bargains. That matched estimates, but data for the prior month were revised higher.From a year earlier, the gauge was up 4.7%, a step down from a 5% gain in October. The overall PCE price index increased 0.1% and was up 5.5% from a year ago, the lowest since October 2021 but still well above the central bank’s 2% goal.Personal spending, adjusted for changes in prices, stalled in November, the weakest since July and below forecast. An increase in services spending, led by restaurants and accommodation, offset a decline in outlays on merchandise. New vehicles were the leading contributor of that decrease.Like the consumer price index figures released earlier this month, the figures point to a welcome retreat in price pressures and suggest the US has passed peak inflation. While many expect to see a rapid pullback in inflation over the next year, the Fed is ultimately aiming for a 2% goal.Powell emphasized that last week when he said the central bank needs “substantially more evidence” to have confidence that inflation is on a sustained downward path.“Robust wage income and real income suggest the labor market has yet to cool meaningfully, and officials are unlikely to view this report as convincing enough to cause them to back off from a terminal fed funds rate above 5%.”— Anna Wong and Eliza Winger, economistsLooking ahead, the central bank is expected to continue raising interest rates into next year — to a higher level than many investors had expected — and remain restrictive for some time. As for the size of any February rate hike, Powell said the decision will be based on incoming data, like Friday’s figures and others for December to be released throughout next month.“It seems reasonable to expect people to become more cautious, now that they have run down about half of their accumulated pandemic savings, and labor market conditions are softening,” Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said in a note.While he sees consumption expanding at a robust pace in the current quarter, “we would be amazed if that pace is repeated in the first quarter of next year,” Shepherdson said.The median estimates in a Bloomberg survey of economists were for a 0.2% advance in the core PCE price index and a 0.1% gain in inflation-adjusted spending. US stock futures fluctuated in early trading while Treasury yields bounced higher.Consumer WeaknessThe report indicates that consumers lost momentum last month amid higher interest rates and elevated inflation. While the strength of the jobs market and rising wages have bolstered household spending, Americans are tapping into savings and leaning more on credit cards, raising the question of whether consumers will be able to continue to drive economic growth through 2023.The saving rate ticked up to 2.4% in November, the first increase since July but among the lowest readings on record, the Commerce Department report showed.Inflation-adjusted outlays for merchandise dropped 0.6%, the worst since February, while spending on services rose 0.3%.Many economists expect the US to fall into recession within the next year, but the outlook remains highly uncertain. That said, economic activity has generally accelerated in the second half of the year. Data out Thursday showed gross domestic product rose an annualized 3.2% in the third quarter, higher than previously estimated.Wage GainsRising wages and lower gas prices gave many Americans the wherewithal to keep spending in November. Inflation-adjusted disposable income rose 0.3%. Wages and salaries, unadjusted for prices, were up 0.5% for a second month.Sustained wage gains, particularly in service sectors, could keep inflation persistently higher than the Fed’s goal for some time, underscoring the importance of the labor market to officials’ decision-making in the months ahead.More generally, economists expect the PCE price indexes to decelerate slower than the Labor Department’s consumer price index. By the end of next year, Fed officials anticipate core PCE inflation to be around 3.5%.In addition to the softer consumer spending figures, a separate report showed more moderate demand for business equipment. Orders placed with US manufacturers for non-defense capital goods excluding aircraft rose 0.2% in November after a sharp downward revision to the prior month, according to Commerce Department. Total bookings for durable goods sank 2.1%, the most since April 2020. The data aren’t adjusted for inflation.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{".SPX":0.9,".DJI":0.9,".IXIC":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2186,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9922452299,"gmtCreate":1671834117811,"gmtModify":1676538600396,"author":{"id":"3560899449318624","authorId":"3560899449318624","name":"EdwardLe","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f447673cbc2ea8e60c5dca962cfa9680","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3560899449318624","idStr":"3560899449318624"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"So Apple stock is cheap now and might go cheaper","listText":"So Apple stock is cheap now and might go cheaper","text":"So Apple stock is cheap now and might go cheaper","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":12,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9922452299","repostId":"2293551384","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2293551384","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1671809458,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2293551384?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-12-23 23:30","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Apple: 3 Compelling Reasons To Invest In 2023","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2293551384","media":"Seeking Alpha","summary":"SummaryAmid macro concerns and supply disruptions, Apple has delivered a negative total return of 24","content":"<div>\n<p>SummaryAmid macro concerns and supply disruptions, Apple has delivered a negative total return of 24% so far in 2022.Supply challenges caused by Covid-19 related disruptions and semiconductor ...</p>\n\n<a href=\"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4566064-apple-stock-3-reasons-invest-2023\">Web Link</a>\n\n</div>\n","source":"seekingalpha_fund","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Year-to-date, investors have seen a negative total return of 24% from Apple’s stock, amid concerns about lingering supply chain disruptions and the growing risk of a hard landing for the economy in the coming year.Despite the challenges, however, Apple looks well-prepared for a comeback in 2023. And here are three compelling reasons why.End In Sight For Covid-19 Related DisruptionSupply DisruptionSupply challenges caused by Covid-19 related disruptions and an industry-wide semiconductor shortage continued to impact Apple's ability to meet customer demand for its products in 2022. More trouble could be yet to come, as Apple warned in November about lower iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone Pro Max shipments, following Covid-related labor shortages which have disrupted production at Foxconn’s main iPhone assembly facility in Zhengzhou, China.But in an effort to improve supply chain resilience, Apple is diversifying its supply chain beyond China. With more production shifting to India and Vietnam and increased procurement from the US, Taiwan and elsewhere, the company will in future be better protected from localized manufacturing risks, as well as trade and geopolitical tensions.The supply issues aren’t over yet, but the end is clearly in sight. As chip makers have ramped up production to meet demand, silicon-related supply constraints have already eased significantly during the course of the year. The supply position for iPads and MacBook Pro, which had been considerably constrained throughout most of 2021 and during the first half of 2022, has also improved significantly since then.Moreover, with China now moving away from its zero-Covid policy, pandemic-related supply disruption issues may soon finally be no more. Things might get a little worse in the short term, as rising infections temporarily exacerbate existing supply challenges and Covid-related labor shortages. In the longer term, however, the benefits will rack up - as a shift away from strict social controls and unsustainable ‘closed-loop’ manufacturing operations will eventually lead to an enduring improvement in the supply situation.Demand RecoveryThe same could be said on the demand side too. In the short term, there will be a hit to consumer spending, as people across China choose to stay at home either because they have become unwell with Covid or are trying to avoid catching the virus. After a couple of months though, a return to normality should eventually lead to higher economic activity, and in particular, increased consumer spending.We’ve seen the same pattern across the globe as other countries have abandoned their strict Covid-containment strategies and learned to live with the virus. Pent-up demand and an improvement in consumer confidence, driven by better job security and increased employment opportunities, would likely lead to a resurgence in Apple’s sales growth in China too.Demonstrating the recent depressed demand, Apple’s sales growth in Greater China, which includes Hong Kong and Taiwan, slowed to just 9% in the year to September 24, 2022, down from 70% in 2021. This was largely attributable to macro factors, as Apple extended its market share lead in its most important market - premium smartphones. In the $600-plus smartphone space, its market share rose to 70% in China in the second quarter of 2022, up from 58% in Q1, according to data from market research firm IDC.And while a recovery may only be noticeable from the second half of 2023, it’s important to remember that investor sentiment usually improves before the temporary disruption is over - as investors will likely anticipate a recovery before it actually takes place.Service Revenue OpportunityiOS Services and Apple TV+Although product sales generate a substantial majority of revenues, it’s clear that services are of growing importance to Apple’s growth.Of course, the opportunity from services is inextricably linked to the size of its user base - things from the App store and other related services simply cannot sell well unless people are spending time on the company’s devices. But that doesn’t mean revenue from services won’t continue to outpace product sales - as demand for digital content, sold through its App Store, Apple Music and other digital content stores, is expected to hold up well in a still rapidly expanding market.Services are a higher margin business too - Apple generated a gross margin of 71.7% from services in 2022, compared to 36.3% for device products. Looking ahead, recent price increases on Apple Music, TV+ and its One bundle will likely drive revenue growth and further margin improvement in coming quarters. These pricing changes were only announced in late October, and have yet to show up in its latest financial results.On the downside, competition and regulatory risks, particularly those relating to its App Store, is a potential headwind. The proposed EU Digital Markets Act could force Apple to open up the distribution of apps on iOS devices.The potential impact to Apple’s bottom line would likely be limited, however, as the proportion of users opting to purchase products from other sources is expected to be very small. As we can see from Android users, who can already install apps outside of Google’s Play Store, only a small minority of users actually choose to take advantage of the extra competition, due to network effects, security concerns and sticky behavioral patterns. This reflects a 'winner takes all' market that demonstrates the value of scale in attracting customers and developers alike.Advertising & FintechBeyond this, Apple is looking to exploit growth in other services. It has a growing presence in the mobile advertising market - Apple Search Ads on its App Store is a relatively new entrant that has great potential. Its ads business has seen particularly strong growth, at a time when its competitors have been negatively affected by the introduction of its privacy changes last year, namely Apple’s App Tracking Transparency framework. And going forwards, there’s scope for more ad placements in more of its iOS apps, such as Music, Books, Fitness and Podcasts, as well as on its Apple TV+ streaming service.Apple is looking at opportunities to grow in the financial technology (fintech) space too. Apple Pay, its mobile payments service, is currently its biggest success, but its ambitions do not rest there. The company partnered with Goldman Sachs to launch Apple Card in 2019, and has plans to launch Apple Pay Later - a buy now pay later (BNPL) service that directly competes with the likes of Klarna (KLAR), Affirm (AFRM) and Afterpay.The global fintech market is projected to grow by a compound annual rate of about 25% over the next five years, and reach a market value of approximately $324 billion by 2026.Improving MarginsFinally, improving margins is another reason to be bullish on Apple. The company’s industry-leading margins are a testament to the strength of its brand and its loyal customer base. It gives the company an element of revenue visibility that other businesses simply don't have.And such is Apple's wide moat that the company enjoys strong pricing power - which continues to deliver for its gross margin. It has enabled the company to hike prices not only for services, which were discussed above, but also for its products. Higher prices for its iPhone 14 devices were seen in a number of markets outside of the US and China, as the company sought to offset FX headwinds from the stronger dollar.Gross margin202220212020Products36.3%35.3%31.5%Services71.7%69.7%66.0%Total 43.3% 41.8% 38.2%Source: Apple's 2022 Annual ReportApple’s gross margin has increased by 150 basis points over the past year, to 43.3%. This reflected stronger margins for both products and services, as well as a favorable shift in the revenue mix towards higher margin services.Widening margins benefit Apple’s bottom line as it enables earnings growth to outpace revenue growth. This combined with the benefit of stock buybacks, which reduces Apple’s share count and further raises its earnings per share.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"AAPL":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2063,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"defaultTab":"posts","isTTM":true}
