billion wipeout hasn't deterred retail investors who say they're holding through the pain — and that they see the stock's dramatic decline as an opportunity to keep buying.Retail investors Business Insider spoke to brushed off the latest sell-off as an overreaction, even as big-money investors grow concerned about Tesla's EV business and the impact of Elon Musk's political ambitions and other side projects.Tesla shares closed up 3.9% on Friday, at $249.98, but they're still down nearly 50% from the all-time high of $479.86 in December.Neil Rozenbaum, a retail investor who first bought Tesla stock in 2019, said he isn't scared by the recent wipeout. He says he's well accustomed to volatility and describes the decline as an overreaction from traders.\"I've experienced sell-offs before, whether it's Tesla or another company, so it doesn't really scare me that much,\" he told BI in an interview.Rozenbaum said he bought around $10,000 worth of Tesla stock last Friday, when Tesla posted its seventh straight week of losses and before Monday's 15% crash.But Rozenbaum says he isn't worried about his bet despite a decline in Tesla sales in recent months.He's also bullish on other initiatives the company has in the pipeline. In particular, he's betting that sales could see a boost this year if Tesla releases a refreshed Model Y.Asked about Musk's political activity, which some investors are starting to feel is a liability for the brand, Rozenbaum wasn't concerned.It would take a lot for Rozenbaum to sell his stake in Tesla. He won't consider it unless there's a significant deterioration in its business, or if Elon Musk steps down as CEO, he said.\"I like the guy, which is probably why I bought shares. I mean, I bought Tesla shares because he's the leader. I don't think anyone else would've made Tesla that big, to be honest. So yeah, I'd say I'm a fan of what he's doing.\"Fabian Varcianna invested in Tesla for the first time in 2022. He also said he wasn't ready to give up on the stock. Despite the bearish talk around Tesla's sales, he's bullish on the company's AI endeavors and its full self-driving software, which he believes is ahead of the competition. Critics of the tech \"have never done proper research,\" he told BI.Varcianna said he bought around $24,000 worth of Tesla stock over multiple days in the last week.Like Rozenbaum, Varcianna wasn't too concerned about Elon Musk's involvement in the new administration, particularly within the Department of Government Efficiency. Musk's juggling of his responsibilities across his various companies and in the White House reflects how hard-working he is, Varcianna said.\"I'm not a fan of any human being. However, he doesn't worry me. CureVac declined to say how many who got the shot got sick or how many received a placebo. But the results suggest the vaccine works less well for older people than in a younger population, Chief Technology Officer Mariola Fotin-Mleczek said in an interview Wednesday.</p>\n<p>Though preliminary, the results throw the future of the vaccine into question as wealthy nations around the world move swiftly to inoculate their populations with shots already available. Still, CureVac will finish its trial and plans to gain approval, Chief Executive Officer Franz-Werner Haas said.</p>\n<p>“There is a huge need for vaccine, and I think we can still make a contribution,” Haas said.</p>\n<p>The company’s shares fell more than 49% in post-market trading after being up 17% this year through Wednesday’s close.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d6ec3f2e05cfbc6c7d87c3fa174f459c\" tg-width=\"1302\" tg-height=\"663\"></p>\n<p>In April, Elon Musk tweeted about CureVac, which&nbsp;Tesla Inc.&nbsp;has&nbsp;partnered with&nbsp;on a vaccine printer,saying&nbsp;it “sounds like they’re a few months away from regulatory approval.” He added that “a tidal wave of vaccine is coming this summer.” He later deleted the tweet.</p>\n<p>The shot could be a boost in the developing world, since it doesn’t require the deep freezing needed for other Covid shots. Partly owned by the German government, CureVac has forged partnerships with&nbsp;Bayer AG,GlaxoSmithKline Plc&nbsp;and the&nbsp;U.K. government&nbsp;aimed at speeding production of its shot and future versions that will target mutated strains.</p>\n<p>The data comes as the world is at something of a crossroads in the Covid fight, with global infections falling even as outbreaks in places with less access to vaccines serve as a reminder that the pandemic is far from over. The wealthiest countries have taken an outsize share of the&nbsp;more than 2.4 billion shots&nbsp;administered so far.</p>\n<p>The proliferation of variants in the CureVac trial is testimony to how the pandemic has changed since the first large vaccine clinical trials were run last year.</p>\n<p><b>Genetic Sequencing</b></p>\n<p>CureVac’s researchers genetically sequenced 124 of the 134 cases they included in their analysis. Just one of the sequenced cases was due to the original SARS-CoV-2 virus first identified in Wuhan, China. The rest came from a range of variants, including 21% of cases attributable to a new variant called lambda that was first identified in Peru.</p>\n<p>TheWorld Health Organization&nbsp;added lambda to its&nbsp;watchlist&nbsp;as a variant of interest on Monday.</p>\n<p>Some 57% of the Covid cases in the study were due to so-called variants of concern, the four variants that the World Health Organization has deemed the most worrying. Most of these -- about 41% of all the cases -- were due to the alpha variant first observed in the U.K., CureVac said.</p>\n<p>That variant is now the most common in the U.S., and other vaccines, including shots from&nbsp;Pfizer Inc.&nbsp;and&nbsp;BioNTech SE&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;Novavax Inc., have shown themselves effective against it. CureVac didn’t release detailed data about how its shot performed against each of the variants.</p>\n<p><b>Final Readout</b></p>\n<p>More details will emerge in the final readout of the study, which will include more than 200 Covid cases and could come within two or three weeks, CureVac said.</p>\n<p>Like the shots from&nbsp;Moderna Inc.&nbsp;and the Pfizer-BioNtech alliance, CureVac’s vaccine relies on mRNA, enlisting the body’s own cells as vaccine factories. Unproven until last year, the technology has now catapulted to the forefront of the global fight against Covid.</p>\n<p>CureVac’s shot, though, is subtly different than its competitors, because it uses an unmodified form of mRNA.</p>\n<p>CureVac has said it plans to supply 300 million vaccine doses this year, enough to immunize 150 million people.
