expire","content":"
While it's not quad (or even triple) witching day, today's a whole lot of weekly options will expire, may of which will be worthless, and others will be providing a supporting \"pin\" to underlying prices. It's why, even though we are enjoying a beautiful spring week, Goldman notes that single stock options trading activity is elevated relative to historical levels. To wit, daily options volumes are up 70% in April, up from YTD lows of $2.4bn on 30-Mar.

In total, across single stocks, $544BN of options are set to expiry today, including $305BN calls. As such, today’s expiry could be important for stocks with large open interest in at-the-money(ATM) options, as market makers delta-hedging their unusually large options portfolios will be active. This flow is likely to dampen volatility in some names while exacerbating stock price moves in others.

How to trade this?

As Goldman's Vishal Vivek writes, at major expirations, options traders track situations wherea large amount of open interest is set to expire. In situations where there is a significant amount of expiring open interest in at-the-money strikes (strike prices at or very near the current stockprice), delta-hedging activity can impact the underlying stock’s trading that day. If market makers or other options traders who delta-hedge their positions are net long ATM options, expiration-related flow could have the effect of dampening stock price movements, causing the stock price to settle near the strike with large open interest. This situation is often referred to as a “pin” and can be an ideal situation fora large investor trying to enter/exit a stock position. Alternatively, if delta-hedgers are net short ATM options (have a “negative gamma” position), their hedging activity could exacerbate stock price moves.

What that means it expiration-related trades may cause trading activity to aggressively pick up for stocks with a significant amount of ATM open interest.

So to help traders looking to hop on for daytrading opportunities, here is a table identifying possible focus stocks with large ATM open interest expiring today, which is compared to the average daily volume of the underlying stocks. As Goldman puts it, \"expiration-related activity is likely to have more of an impact if the open interest represents a significant percentage of the stock’s volume.\"

Finally, for what it's worth, this morning our friends at SpotGamma write that this has been a rather strange OPEX cycle, \"with a consistent almost mechanical bid pushing markets higher. We’ve not seen the Call Wall “breached” this many times before, but there are other aberrations that we’ve mentioned in previous notes – like net put sales. We’ve got some theories on this we are posting in a longer form piece.\"

According to SG, because implied volatility has now compressed (ie VIX at new lows) there is now more potential for “long term” volatility. Recall how as of late any sharp, violent drop in markets was bought so quickly (see chart below). These bursts lower coincided with record VIX spikes, but a reflective snap-back bid would bring a market recovery of equal force as the VIX (i.e. implied volatility) reversed.

And one other curious observation from SpotGamma:

When implied volatility is very high, its very sensitive to market moves and also signaling that markets are expecting more large moves ahead. As soon as markets would pause or catch a support level, that implied volatility would quickly reverse lower. We often think of this analogy that if a shark stops swimming, it sinks ( partially true!). If the market stops dropping then Implied volatility sinks.

With this, as we often talk about, lower implied volatility (ie lower VIX) signals market makers have to buy back short hedges which fuels rallies. SG's conclusion: this current level of lower implied volatility now gives the market more downside firepower. Starting with a lower implied volatility “slows down” that responsive “snap-back” buying mechanism. Additionally, gamma is higher when IV is lower so gamma flips may have more juice.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
$544 Billion In Options Expire Today: Here's What Will Move
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n$544 Billion In Options Expire Today: Here's What Will Move\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-04-16 22:18 GMT+8 zerohedge\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
While it's not quad (or even triple) witching day, today's a whole lot of weekly options will expire, may of which will be worthless, and others will be providing a supporting \"pin\" to underlying ...
\n\nSource Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{".IXIC":"NASDAQ Composite",".DJI":"道琼斯",".SPX":"S&P 500 Index","SPY":"标普500ETF"},"source_url":"https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/544-billion-options-expire-today-heres-what-will-move?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+zerohedge%2Ffeed+%28zero+hedge+-+on+a+long+enough+timeline%2C+the+survival+rate+for+everyone+drops+to+zero%29","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1175692875","content_text":"While it's not quad (or even triple) witching day, today's a whole lot of weekly options will expire, may of which will be worthless, and others will be providing a supporting \"pin\" to underlying prices. Santangelo added then that he \"would not rule out the possibility a competitive bidding situation.\"\nWedbush analyst Daniel Ives called the Nuance deal a \"trophy\" for Microsoft's management team that could signal a greater interest in mergers over the coming months, given the company's reported interest in purchasing chat platform Discord for upwards of $10 billion.\n\"The Nuance deal is a strategic no brainer in our opinion for Microsoft and fits like a glove into its healthcare endeavors at a time in which hospitals and doctors are embracing next generation AI capabilities,\" Ives wrote in a note to clients after the deal announcement, while reiterating an outperform rating and a $300 target price.\nBeyond healthcare, Ives sees room for Microsoft, which already partners with Nuance, to integrate the company's advanced speech tools \"throughout its consumer and enterprise ecosystem.\"\nMicrosoft and Nuance said in a release announcing their deal that Nuance's \"expertise will come together with the breadth and depth of Microsoft's cloud, including Azure, Teams, and Dynamics 365, to deliver next-generation customer engagement and security solutions.\"\nMicrosoft shares have gained 19.4% over the past three months as the Dow Jones Industrial Average has risen 8.6%.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"NUAN":0.9,"03086":0.9,"09086":0.9,"MSFT":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3054,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":346122629,"gmtCreate":1618016173561,"gmtModify":1704705936326,"author":{"id":"3574158219076158","authorId":"3574158219076158","name":"Solsk","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1b2b1e76582f923826a2028b6b26521b","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574158219076158","authorIdStr":"3574158219076158"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Soa","listText":"Soa","text":"Soa","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/346122629","repostId":"1168300924","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2857,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":348531292,"gmtCreate":1617938916816,"gmtModify":1704705069497,"author":{"id":"3574158219076158","authorId":"3574158219076158","name":"Solsk","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1b2b1e76582f923826a2028b6b26521b","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574158219076158","authorIdStr":"3574158219076158"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Woah","listText":"Woah","text":"Woah","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/348531292","repostId":"2126012847","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":3657,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3577415105079753","authorId":"3577415105079753","name":"股惑仔79","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2521bf7235578dd93b9e7d10c59d5058","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"idStr":"3577415105079753","authorIdStr":"3577415105079753"},"content":"Help me back thks","text":"Help me back thks","html":"Help me back thks"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":341408783,"gmtCreate":1617844464642,"gmtModify":1704703817033,"author":{"id":"3574158219076158","authorId":"3574158219076158","name":"Solsk","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1b2b1e76582f923826a2028b6b26521b","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3574158219076158","authorIdStr":"3574158219076158"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Zz","listText":"Zz","text":"Zz","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/341408783","repostId":"2125726223","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2125726223","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1617826841,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2125726223?lang=en_US&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-04-08 04:20","market":"us","language":"en","title":"US STOCKS-S&P closes slightly higher after Fed minutes feed stable rate view","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2125726223","media":"Reuters","summary":"Prison operator GEO tumbles on dividend suspension\"Some time\" before substantial progress seen on go","content":"

Prison operator GEO tumbles on dividend suspension

\"Some time\" before substantial progress seen on goals - Cuomo shared few details on how it would work, but in the past he has said he wants to run the state's sports betting industry through the New York Lottery.
\n
New York state has announced it approved a budget for its fiscal year 2022 that would allow for legal online wagering in the state for the first time.
\n
Further reporting from the Action Network.
\n
Cuomo has said he wants to run the state's sports betting industry through the New York Lottery, which is run by the government. Under his plan, the New York state Lottery would issue requests for proposals from only a few mobile betting operators, which it could then license out to other sportsbook operators, according to PlayNY .
\n
\"We want to do sports betting the way the state runs the lottery where the state gets the revenues. Many states have done sports betting but they basically allow casinos to run their own gambling operations. That makes a lot of money for casinos but it makes minimal money for the state,\" Cuomo said in January about his plan .
\n
\"And I'm not here to make casinos a lot of money. I'm here to raise funds for the state. So we have a different model for sports betting.\"
\n
Cuomo's proposal to have the New York Lottery run sports betting has been maligned by lawmakers for its lack of competition and constitutionality concerns . It is also extremely different from how other states run online sports betting. States like Pennsylvania and New Jersey allow for several casinos to legally operate, forcing higher competition for customers.
\n
Gov. Cuomo and New York's legislative leaders announced that an agreement on the state budget has been reached, but few other details on the specifics of the sports betting plan are known at this time.
\n
Sports betting is already technically legal in New York state but it's limited to in-person betting at four casinos in upstate New York. Online wagering is not currently allowed in any part of New York.
\n
Online wagering is where most bets occur in states that offer both forms of wagering.
